I feel you technopolis. I spent too much time trying to figure it out. It appears Perlon doesn’t always release their albums on CD (including their last album release, for bruno pronsato) and typically release the cd and LP at once. Ordering a 3LP when shipping costs are fast inflating is no small sacrifice…

New Tony Price album is very good

In late 2020, Tony Price found himself stuck in Los Angeles, unable to fly back to his native Toronto because of Covid-19 restrictions. But he found another way. A former radio DJ Price knew was selling their 1981 Lincoln Continental Mark VI, so he bought the car, intending to drive back to Canada in style. He found a bag of cassette tapes—homemade mixes and radio show recordings from the late '80s replete with motorik Detroit techno, thumping Chicago house and advertisements for products that only exist in memory—stashed in the trunk. The tapes and the old car made a perfect match, and Price played the cassettes constantly during the long drive from California to Ontario.

After his road trip, Price scoured the tapes for samples, pulling together what would become his new album.

mh, Sunday, 28 September 2025 18:16 (one month ago)

I have now checked out that article. I'm getting a strong "no dancing, just vibes" mood here, but the vibes... are very understated bordering on nonexistent. Looks like there's a lot of money involved

mh, Sunday, 28 September 2025 19:15 (one month ago)

I’m sure it was posted here at some point but someone independent wrote/posted a long article about scenes that get ignored by writers as unserious, with the implication there were some underlying issues of class involved. This would have been the period right before 2020, and a lot of writers were called out. I remember it specifically mentioning the nightclub police raids in the UK, and how those places hosted some of the artists/djs mentioned.

I mean, I’d probably opt for a club with Detroit techno guys playing over Sasha/Digweed, but I’d probably have a good time at either? I’ve

Interesting, because part of what the RA article was about was how these DJ-producers make a lot of money and the crowds they attract also make a lot of money.

a tv star not a dirty computer man (the table is the table), Sunday, 28 September 2025 22:44 (one month ago)

I found the article interesting but I do wish (this is more a general plea than an issue I have with the article generally) that there were more attempts to place this kind of phenomena within some kind of broader sociohistorical context. A lot of the time what writers are attempting to describe is a manifestation within a musical context of broader social trends, and while identifying the specific symptom can be useful, examining it in isolation too-strictly can also be distorting.

It seems just self-evident to me that the two greatest shapers of the current "state" of dance music as a social phenomenon (if we're going to abstract away from specific, lived reality long enough in order to describe it as a single thing in vaguely disapproving terms) are the encroachment of social media and the experience of the pandemic, with certain aspects of the latter turbocharging dynamics that were already being stimulated by the former.

Pre-COVID I don't think I'd ever experienced going over to someone's house and them playing a DJ set on a large TV in the background. It hardly needs spelling out why this became a big thing during those periods where you couldn't go out. Obviously we don't need to find or maintain homebound solutions these days, but this is still a big thing for a lot of people, I think because (to pick up on the above point) - a big part of a lot of people's enjoyment of dance music is wrapped up in good life projection; not just literally instagram-ready but also instagram in its underlying vibe and sensibility.

Tim F, Sunday, 28 September 2025 23:19 (one month ago)

xpost fairly recent new editorial team, probably coupled with the fact that reviews aren't as necessary in 2025 when listeners can judge for themselves instantly via Spotify and Soundcloud

boxedjoy, Monday, 29 September 2025 07:59 (one month ago)

With most music available to listen to on the internet reviews are as important as ever. There's an ocean of music released every week and it'd be good to know 1. That it exists and 2. If it's worth checking out.

The recent discussion is about how whole scenes can pass us by. There's record labels with huge catalogues that I've stumbled across almost by accident- Exalt Records, one of my favourite techno/electro labels from the last decade, I only found from a track someone randomly posted on a forum.

There's a need for more places doing reviews, as each place that does them (Bandcamp or Quietus or whatever) have their own tastes and while they're valuable for highlighting what those reviewers are into, they miss out on a majority of the music pouring into the world. I know in my heart that there's music out there just waiting for me to discover it, my new favourite record just needs someone to tell me it exists.

Spandex, Monday, 29 September 2025 08:34 (one month ago)

Oh I don't disagree - I'd love to see more reviews in general, because there's so much stuff that isn't covered out there, and also I just enjoy reading the ways that a critic does (or doesn't) connect to a piece of work. But you can see the argument why reviews aren't the focus of any publication's editorial in 2025. Equally I'm not desperate for a return to the days of 150 word "this is good for DJs and very functional, certified banger" paragraph summaries that plague dance music writing.

I've actually really enjoyed the RA Mix Of The Day series - not every single one is good or even appealing, but there's always enough to keep me going through an afternoon working from home.

boxedjoy, Monday, 29 September 2025 08:54 (one month ago)

Absolutely!

Spandex, Monday, 29 September 2025 09:04 (one month ago)

Maybe I’m a snob but I typically didn’t think much of RA’s reviews - conversely, I found their end of year round ups essential reading.

Perhaps it’s because RA’s day to day coverage of stuff is pretty functional, so when they “speak to history” it feels more notable and persuasive - as compared to more highbrow publications who always feel like they’re trying to speak to history and end up cheapening the currency.

Tim F, Monday, 29 September 2025 10:20 (one month ago)

I didn’t think much of the reviews either, but I’m with Spandex— there’s way too much music being released, and no one is sorting it in the way that RA used to. It was a genuine service, and one that I appreciated.

(I also like the dumb little paragraph summaries but that’s because I like reading reviews and always have, no matter the genre)

a tv star not a dirty computer man (the table is the table), Monday, 29 September 2025 11:06 (one month ago)

My sense is that RA’s editorial output has, for years now, been secondary to its ticket selling services, which I imagine is where the actual money is. Which may also explain why their editorial content skews a lot to news and reporting about festivals and big events. I can’t resist rolling my eyes whenever they publish anything about the “clubbing community” or festival circuit (though at least it’s no longer just idealized paeans) but ai believe that’s what they’re selling, rather than discourse on individual releases.

To tim’s OTM post, I’d just add the rise of corporate mega-festivals inching out other kind of events, and the influence of private equity overseeing promoters, with an eye to risk assessment more than quality.

ed.b, Monday, 29 September 2025 14:07 (one month ago)

i support ra's keinemusik takedown. if we have no time for making fun of the rich dorks' idea of what is cool then music crit is really dead

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 29 September 2025 14:48 (one month ago)

After reading the discussion above, I was interested to read the linked RA article. I thought I'd never heard of Keinemusik, but as I started reading the description at the beginning of the article of the music and people into it thought: 'that sounds like that Adam Port track I heard last year'. And lo and behold Keinemusik is Adam Port and several other people! Last year I heard 'Move' as part of a Soundcloud mix and had to find out what it was. The thing is, I think it is very good -- very catchy and well produced. BUT there was also something about it I didn't like, a blandness, I suppose.

dubmill, Monday, 29 September 2025 15:40 (one month ago)

Maybe I’m a snob but I typically didn’t think much of RA’s reviews

i don’t remember if they had reviews or scores (maybe just a generic one sentence blurb like “the copengahen based duo’s first single on verklenkt brings buzzsaw synths and bubbling baselines, landing somewhere between after-hours hypnosis and peak-time tension”) but at one point they had a section called ‘tracks’ that i found useful for keeping up with stuff. it had like 5-6 songs a day

flopson, Tuesday, 30 September 2025 01:03 (one month ago)

Sorry for the half thought-through note I posted over the weekend. I honestly had the thought as I was walking out the door, “I bet Tim F would have a much better take here” and I’m glad he’s posted.

I get where dubmill is coming from in that I don’t hate that individual track, now that I’ve heard it, but it does have a blandness and the idea that it’s a standout that’s making people raise their phones to record a dj playing a song is kind of depressing

Did we know Call Super was releasing a new album today? I mean it’s credited to a bunch of names but they’re all pseudonyms. Very dancefloor focused - some of it is a bit “2006 Trentemoller called and wants his sound palette back” but the harder tracks are generally amazing - especially “Limelight”.

In chatting to Ivy about the album I perhaps meanly described the first few tracks as Rerecordo Villalobos, but in the continuous mix version the build to the more hectic material is truly magnificent.

It reminds me a bit of M.A.N.D.Y.’s ‘Body Language’ (over 20 years old! My gosh). I think it was Matt DC who described that mix as containing “hidden shallows”.
