Everyone's so fucking bad at being Mark E Smith. Stop fucking trying. Stop. You think you're just like him but you never could be. Plus your musicians are never a patch on any of his musicians. It's just empty pastiche. Shit.

Written while listening to the first half of Fixer Upper, which is the last I'll ever hear of Yard Act hopefully

def feels more rock band sleaford mods than MES

Quietus review far more generous than I'd ever be to much of this post-punk wave, but it nevertheless goes in: https://thequietus.com/articles/31041-yard-act-the-overload-review

Absolutely true. He always railed against the copycats but the truth is nature abhors a vacuum, and his loss leaves a big musical hole. I don't mind artists who are inspired by, or want to pay homage to, The Fall, but bring something new to the table.

Having said that, I like bits of many of the current wave of Fall-esque bands but I don't outright love any of them.

at this point, whenever i see a picture of 4 skinny white dudes, i just assume they sound like this

This is the nadir of the current post-punk revival. No one ever demanded that MES enunciate more clearly.

I like the earlier pre-album stuff, haven't heard much of the newer stuff yet. I can hear a bit of Goldie Lookin Chain in the delivery, a touch of Franz in the guitar which sounds fantastic to my ears.

They're on course for a number 1 uk album

🥵🥵 The battle for Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart is heating up https://t.co/btbS1MLrqX

They remind me of major label-era Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

two years pass...

I'm only moderately whelmed by their studio recordings, but man were they good at Glastonbury.

Best gig I’ve been to this year. Disappointed that I can’t make it to the Millennium Square show in Leeds next weekend as I expect that to be a bit special.

Oh cool, I've been trying to decide whether or not to see them when they come through town later this year. Really like a handful of songs but find it difficult to get through either of their full-lengths. Sounds like it's worth seeing them anyway so guess I'll be getting a ticket!

Yeah do it - such an explosively high energy gig, and the backing singers/dancers are terrific.
