Thread for Ola Kvernberg

Seems there's been some interest generated in the EOY slander & hype thread abt his new album Steamdome2: the Hypogean I stumbled across it on rym & was pleasantly surprised; I've gotten tons of mileage out of it & I think its prob one of the standout releases this year

This thread was prob necessary just in order for me crowdfarm an adequate description: rym refers to it as "nu-jazz & progressive electronic" & thats prob good for the first track Arpy which starts out as charming neoprog & becomes, a few minutes in, entirely subsumed by windtunnel italo (as imago referred to it, "RIDING a HORSE THROUGH SPACE", lol) but much of the rest of the album is devoted to a sort of weird proggy version of 70s afrobeat? It sounded kinda corny tp me, like maybe 70s film scores corny? But the corniness is a distinctly ILX-friendly version of corniness...like almost a disco vibe? So maybe its like balearic afrobeat neoprog idk? I'll leave links to most of the album so maybe you guys can come up w something...

Yeah, it's great. 'Arpy' was one of the last things to make it (high) on my ballot, would have voted for the album too if I'd managed to get in a proper number of listens before deadline.

I realise "great" is not adequately descriptive for your purposes, sorry. ;_;

I sent this to a friend and called it Norwegian space-prog-jazz, but I'm not sure that's otm either. I don't much hear afrobeat in the mix (I might just interpret that as jazz), but I am still learning this album

I first used the phrase 'riding a horse through space' to refer to Michael Garrison's 'Escape'. It is a fine birthright to obtain and this is a fine album, although I too voted Arpy rather than the whole thing

"space/prog/jazz" works for me!

Norwegian space-prog-jazz nonetheless

(I dont listen to a ton of jazz so its possible that I might not even recognize it but say the low end on Get Down feels v Fela to me)

I forgot to post Carbonado, which is another track I love; there's this bonkers climb about three-fourths the way through that almost gives me the spins every time
