Discovered this recently and slowly falling in love with the album. Really good songwriting, well produced (Mark Ronson et als) with elements of neo-soul, prog, jazz fusion, avoids excessive throwback and pastiche. Hard to find exact reference points but makes me think at times of Minnie Ripperton, Roberta Flack, Milton Nascimento. Songs have an urgency to them that gives the sense she really felt like she needed to write them. Rhythm section is killer (Questlove, Pino Palladino, James Poyser).

I don't connect with the record, but I was listening to a Questlove podcast where he was expressing some surprise and disappointment that it wasn't a huge record. Said she turned down playing on the late night shows etc because she didn't feel ready yet, he thought she was going to give Adele some competition.

Huh, not the comparison that would have immediately occurred to me.

Her voice does resemble Adele's in places.
So far, "Boomerang" is the standout for me:

That's a good one. Not really a dud on the album imo though.
She kind of sounds like different singers at different times, although not in a wholly derivative way. Occasionally I get flashes of Amy Winehouse, occasionally Sade.

Hmm I think Yebba is opening for John Mayer in San Francisco which I will be attending. Wasn't considering showing up early but maybe I should.

Seemingly a preview of a new song?

Saw her at Summerstage last night with Rober Glasper. It kind of felt like she delayed going on (Glasper band seemed to be stretching) and then her set was only maybe 40 mins (I think there's a hard stop time at summerstage), but awesome.

Still no new album, just that one new song that came out last year.
