let's try something - this is a thread for new music that rocks. TO BE TOTALLY CLEAR: this is a genre-agnostic definition of "music that rocks." this is not necessarily music with guitars and acoustic drums. it is music that when you hear it, you think "this rocks." to me, that is music that gives you a jolt of energy, makes your pulse quicken, etc. but whatever new music makes you think "hell yeah this rocks," please post it on this thread.

that's what this thread is a reaction to tbh, how much new music is chill and vibey etc., WHICH IS FINE, but it seems like there also has to be new music out there that's about energy/aggression/rocking that i'm missing out on

cool thread idea
tha retail simps - love without friction
i'm betraying the concept of the thread by posting something that is very traditional guitar and drums and retro rock n roll but i'm anticipating this 2022 rock record
tanya tagaq - colonizer
i never got into her previous music but this new song is pretty rocking imho. like suicide but with with extremely guttural inuit throat singing. there's not really any release which makes it somewhat less rocking, but it is pummelling and aggressive
boris - the fallen
the new boris album is mostly (excellent) non-rocking post-rock, drone, shoegaze and slowcore, but this is the one super rocking song on it
wu lu - broken homes
this guy's signed to warp and most of his stuff is warp-style idm. afaik this is the only song of his so far that sounds like this, kind of birthday party-ish dreadrock with a great bassline. really hope he makes more in this style
― flopson, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:35 (three years ago)
The most rockin' metal band I've heard in a long time is Maule. They're like a cross between early Iron Maiden and early (pre-Rick Rubin) Slayer, and their album is amazing.

A little background on La Colonie de Vacances: it came to life when 4 French indie bands (Pneu, Marvin, Papier Tigre and Electric Electric) made a tour together a few years ago. On one of the shows (I happened to be there when I lived in Tours) they had the four bands playing in each corner of the stage, and it was so much fun that they made it project of its own.

i like how embarrassingly direct and emotional a lot of the lyrics are, it comes across as distasteful when most music is too tasteful, though this seems to be the sticking point for a lot of listeners (specifically the song "why")

― beard papa, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:08 (three years ago)
Still waiting for my copy to get here, just got caught up with the comp of their two EPs. It's set my expectations for the full-length very high, "Rainbow Meat" is like the platonic ideal of my favorite kind of noise rock song, completely unhinged and off-putting but also deeply hilarious.
― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:10 (three years ago)
Somewhere between Scratch Acid, Pissed Jeans and S/T era Daughters is where Chat Pile sits for me. They do simple but powerful so well. “Why” is just the latest example but “Crawlspace” hit me in a similar way. Really great band.

Yeah, that Momma track is truly uncanny in how anachronistic it feels. Though the production is maybe a bit more 2020s hi-fi. Also one hell of an earworm, been stuck in my head for days.
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Thursday, 11 August 2022 17:02 (three years ago)
grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg is fantastic but really haunting. also, good call on the Killdozer/vig production comparison. Still a bit surprised they have been getting so much more love than say the Bummer album from last year or pretty much every Pissed Jeans record, but I'm glad. Might also be timing, people being ground down, wanting some authentic noise and angry punk

Yeah Heavy Psych puts out some decent stuff, but I reallllllly wish they'd get some good US distribution. Forced Exposure puts out some of their stuff, but not all, and often way after it comes out officially. Their shipping costs are pretty high ($10 for a $14 CD) and when they do show up in a shop, they are frequently priced nearly at old import level prices.
