What artists would you like to see go through a Kid A-ish period of experimental excess?

Y'know, who do you think is due for a sonic overhaul? It doesn't necessarily have to be along the same bloop-and-bleep lines as Radiohead, but who would you like to see totally bug out and push the envelope 'til the envelope says "woah, chill!"?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Morrissey.

DavidM (DavidM), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Daniel O'Donnel.

No, no, think about it. It would be fantastic.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

was it 'experimental' tho'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Autechre

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see Autechre record a nice album of acoustic ballads like High And Dry.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think even Radiohead would claim Kid A was 'experimental' anyway, so lets not get into this argument.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Johnny Cash

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I guess Kid A wasn't really experimental in that it was more like the continuation of the direction they had been going in for years, whatevah. The big difference was the introduction of new sonic textures and instruments...horns, theremin, voice sampling, etc.

Okay, so maybe the question should be rephrased...what bands would you like to see get some new toys?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

All of them!

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

and big expensive studios in the middle of nowhere so they can work in peace and quiet?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

and producers of yr choice of course.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Callum (Callum), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, so here's the scenario...

Timbaland and Johnny Cash hook up to record an album in an old nuclear-bomb shelter out in the deserts of Arizona, and over the course of their sonic embellishments they hire Talvin Singh to provide his "tablatronics", an electric sitar player, and a choir of 13 cackling chimpanzees. The resulting recording goes on to sell 50 trillion copies.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like Bjork to hook up with the Neptunes.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

If Neil Finn signed for Ninjatune.. it'd sound shit. But it'd be funny.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Janet Jackson does smooth, sensual cyberglitchpop in collaboration with Matthew Herbert and Jan Jelinek.

Dare, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Bush, in a sad attempt to gain some indie credibility, hires Steve Albini to "record" its new direction-changing album. During the same stretch, Gavin Rossdale begins referring to Slint and the Pixies as major influences.

Oh, wait a second ...

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian Eno moves to Nashville and opens a studio, the resulting ambient country movement perplexes both rednecks and newagers who realize they both like weed.

earlnash, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Britney Spears gets sloshed in an absinthe soaked New Years Party and wakes up with a contract to be auxillary percussionist for Kate's band. Uncut quickly declares Grease to be the greatest movie ever made. Everything falls apart when Kate gets in a fight with their new producer Steve Albini and Zomba goes belly up funding the recordings of Lollies 3 Space Arkestra while Mixerman writes all about it on the web.

well aside from that I'd love to see Julie Doiron be given the Sarah McLaughlin treatment.

Spacemen Z, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew WK!!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

it would be really neat to see prince work with the neps and timbo but i suspect that his "organig soul funk" direction his taking works much better.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 28 November 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like radiohead to do this actually, they;ve talked the talk, now lets hear it

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 November 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Neptunes! - We've have enough of your dry, standard 4-minute ultra-compressed quasi-grooves already!

Stephen Gately's Selected Illbient Works Aug-Sept 2003

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 28 November 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I've made up my mind and it's time to get illbient. loops of Ronan Keating vocals with Gately confessing everything he's ever wanted to confess. he may end his days at the end of the record, squealing repeatedly. There will be putdowns of Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Keith Duffy twenty minutes later (no Ronan as his voice has been too much of an omnipresent force as it is.) He will see a clear light at the end of September it will end the world Don't turn thee world on its axis, Stephen he says to himself. This is followed by another long squeal relating to his embarrassment at having just let loose this statement. He imagines the phrase, "let loose" so obviously he now will begin singing, "I'm crazy, I'm crazy for you, and there's nothing that I won't do". HIs biggest display of misguided self-belief is shown, "there are some things maybe". He now realises he wants to hear bells he gets 'em he wants to hear bells. Would Stephen Gately be deafened? Am i shittin unreasonableness out of his ass?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 28 November 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Moby needs to send his popism to hell and go back to making esoteric rave music.

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 28 November 2002 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Tina Turner duetting with Andrew WK!

Okay, this would be less of the experimental and more of the EXCESS!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 November 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"Brian Eno moves to Nashville and opens a studio, the resulting ambient country movement perplexes both rednecks and newagers who realize they both like weed."

He's done it already - 'Here he comes' from 'Before & after Science'. And Lambchop are moving in that direction. More stuff in that vein would be great.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 28 November 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd quite like to see Val Doonican go hardcore bl. A bit of folk here, bit of Emperor there. Smashin'!

(Would be great to have them all make concept album with heavy influenced from prog and classical music, and with the beats and rhythms considerably toned down)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 February 2010 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

I'd have liked The Knife better without the most characteristic thing about the entire act. Some brilliant synthpop songs and arrangements, but I find Karin Dreijer Andersson's voice very annoying at times.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 4 February 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'd have liked I Love Music better without the most characteristic thing about the entire act. Some brilliant discussion and discourse, but I find Geir Hongro's posts very annoying at times.
