another silverchair poll just for me and maybe spottie. this album had the "we're actually serious artists now" campaign behind it, complete with van dyke parks comparing daniel johns to brian wilson and a cover blurb from bono. the shift into full-on psychedelic power-pop while still offering up hardcore riffage is, i think, an underrated approach to making rock music and more bands should do it; as it is, it's the only record i can think of that sounds like this (and i feel like a lot of people, if they could listen to it without the baggage of the band having made it being silverchair, would love the way this album sounds). for me this is "across the night" vs. "tuna in the brine," having lived with this record for almost 20 years (ugh) i still have no idea which is better. revisiting it the other day i was struck by all the cool guitar work going on in "without you" including the i would say undeniably emo outro, also "world upon your shoulders" is a gorgeous song
