another silverchair poll just for me and maybe spottie. this album had the "we're actually serious artists now" campaign behind it, complete with van dyke parks comparing daniel johns to brian wilson and a cover blurb from bono. the shift into full-on psychedelic power-pop while still offering up hardcore riffage is, i think, an underrated approach to making rock music and more bands should do it; as it is, it's the only record i can think of that sounds like this (and i feel like a lot of people, if they could listen to it without the baggage of the band having made it being silverchair, would love the way this album sounds). for me this is "across the night" vs. "tuna in the brine," having lived with this record for almost 20 years (ugh) i still have no idea which is better. revisiting it the other day i was struck by all the cool guitar work going on in "without you" including the i would say undeniably emo outro, also "world upon your shoulders" is a gorgeous song

may check this out tomorrow! is it at all along similar lines to the dissociatives' 'somewhere down the barrel'? because that is a modern bad-taste psychedelic masterpiece imo

imago, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 21:58 (three years ago)

you know i have never heard the dissociatives record but i strongly instinctually feel you will dig this record lj

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 21:59 (three years ago)

instinctively* long day

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 21:59 (three years ago)

Knew this was going to be a Brad poll. Without a relisten and not having heard this for probably well over a decade, I think it'd would be "Tuna in the Brine".

dissociatives record is actually really cool but it's the only johns thing i've ever heard! will def remedy tomorrow

imago, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 22:01 (three years ago)

it’s embarrassing to like a song called “tuna in the brine” this much

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 00:00 (three years ago)

lol i haven't heard it in abt 20 years, but I did love this record when I was 17 - a good age to be introduced to Van Dyke Parks imo

toss up between "I hugged a man's arthritic shoulder" and "you brighten my life like a polystyrene hat"

Roz, Thursday, 3 February 2022 02:50 (three years ago)

Lmao this has melodies coming out of its sweat glands

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 09:52 (three years ago)

probably 'the greatest view'

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 11:04 (three years ago)

that said I am now listening to the Dissociatives album and frankly Brad you have got to try this

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 11:34 (three years ago)

i’m so overdue. you also have to hear young modern like right away, i’m one of the few perverts who think it’s the best silverchair album

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 13:17 (three years ago)

lol i will, that is magnificently vmic tho. i wonder what it is about later albums that draws you to them so much? maybe something to do with the idea of having to come to terms with an existing body of work and thus create something that is a reaction against oneself as much as anything, which produces art that you in particular might be drawn to. just spitballing here sorry if this seems off

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 13:28 (three years ago)

ok this thieving birds suite

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 13:52 (three years ago)

with this band it’s a lot simpler, i got into them with neon ballroom and i far far prefer orchestral silverchair to alt rock also-ran silverchair, and young modern is the album that leaves the latter furthest in the rear view

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 13:53 (three years ago)

that's fair! tbf they did start out as a teenager band that accidentally got huge

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 13:58 (three years ago)

ok this thieving birds suite

starting this poll was worth it

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 14:33 (three years ago)

and i far far prefer orchestral silverchair to alt rock also-ran silverchair,

Oh yeah, definitely. It's kind of shame that much of their reputation in the States, at least at the time, was for the Nirvana biting grunge also-ran first album, so no one was really paying attention when they became a far more interesting band. The student run alt-rock station where I went to school played the absolute shit out of all the singles from Frogstomp and from the follow-up, but I don't recall them every playing anything from Neon Ballroom, save for the one airing of "Anthem for the the Year 2000" on their weekly new music show and never again.

i think i caught “anthem” on mtv at the time and i thought it sounded. so. cool. (what a ridiculous song) plus there was a brief package about the album on mtv news i think that went into what “ana’s song” is about, so i put neon ballroom on my birthday wishlist and my parents got it for me. it took me a while to realize how good it was as a whole (“spawn again” was almost too scary and antimusical for 12yo me) but once i started dwelling on the prettier songs on the second side, partic “black tangled heart” and “paint pastel princess,” i was fully obsessed

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 15:14 (three years ago)

feel like i’ve told that story here before but whatever

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 15:17 (three years ago)

solid doc on the album

to answer this more directly, that's a good theory! probably true to some extent, explained by my root album in this mode, smashing pumpkins adore

unless proven otherwise i also tend to reflexively believe artists get better at making art as they go

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 17:10 (three years ago)

unfortunately johns' regrettable collab with the empire of the sun guy proved me otherwise. new daniel johns solo album april 1 supposedly

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 17:11 (three years ago)

he's still only 42, which is kind of amazing

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 17:11 (three years ago)

as expected, not sure why i haven't been listening to this dissociatives record for the past 15 years. real funhouse mirror tour of britpop that also accounts for the existence of kid a

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 February 2022 17:17 (three years ago)

imago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 17:18 (three years ago)
