the song that dares to ask "what if kate bush was an emo band"

infinite siiiiiilence

this is wrong, this is wrong

i think to ears less punished by a steady diet of emo the first two circa survive albums may come off as monotonous but once you adjust they really are special, the guitars are like winds crisscrossing in a psychedelic storm

one of my former students is obsessed w this band, i always associate them with her

class project pat (m bison), Thursday, 10 February 2022 04:03 (four years ago)

aw that rules!!!!

i've found they're a very easy band to get obsessed with lol

violent waves is probably their least beloved record but for whatever reason (wanting to hear circa survive in college because their album covers were radical but feeling i already had my plate full keeping up with coheed and cambria idk, it was honestly the same thing with mewithoutyou) it was the first one i heard. i didn't return to it much but i think almost all of circa survive's music rewards attention, some of their songs blur by like mathcore and are only legible after you hear them a few times ("semi-constructive criticism"), and the hooks can be so unusual, angling through the songs like crooked trees, appearing strange until your ears adjust to the landscape ("at night it gets worse"). so returning to this record and really falling for the seven-minute opening track which blooms with a quiet heaviness like space nebulae was a kind of expected surprise

i figured i might as well post "at night it gets worse," a late career masterpiece in that i don't think early circa would've had the patience to take this kind of extended walking tour through the ruins. the kind of song that, even though it has a legible structure (verse/chorus/verse/chorus/outro) feels like it gets more and more lost as it goes, trees branching like giant skeleton hands overhead

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 7 November 2022 15:42 (three years ago)

also circa is officially on indefinite hiatus so... plenty of time to catch up lol

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 7 November 2022 15:43 (three years ago)

last decade of circa summary:

violent waves: maybe my favorite at this point but distinctly a grower
descensus: very fun, especially whenever it seems on the verge of becoming a dumb hard rock/metal record
the amulet: their most consistent record, makes me cry
new EPs: their most daring body of work, kinda sucks they're hanging it up for the moment

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 7 November 2022 15:50 (three years ago)

Always wrote these guys off, for some reason I had it in my head that they were another meh metalcore band for some reason. What's their proggiest one? Feels like that would be my way in.

nice thanks. diving in chronologically.

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Monday, 7 November 2022 16:28 (three years ago)

hm that’s actually a tough question to answer… would suggest on letting go (fan favorite, several songs are pretty dense for how catchy they are) or blue sky noise (not their proggiest in songwriting, actually v poppy and accessible, but takes you on a journey anyway) as a gateway

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 7 November 2022 16:29 (three years ago)

xp to jvc

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 7 November 2022 16:29 (three years ago)

i mentioned this on the emo thread a few months ago, but green is now part of an emo supergroup called l.s. dunes, also featuring frank iero from mcr, travis stever from coheed, and the rhythm section from thursday. album (produced by yip!) comes out this friday, seems like it's gonna cook

parts of it kinda sound like a lost '90's alt rock record

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 13 November 2022 20:56 (three years ago)

lives up to the "supergroup" designation bc it really does sound like all the best components of the bands involved crushed together. title track chorus is so mcr

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 13 November 2022 21:07 (three years ago)

“Blender” rips

calstars, Sunday, 13 November 2022 22:20 (three years ago)

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Monday, 14 November 2022 20:59 (three years ago)

Haven't made it to Circa Survive yet because I can't stop playing this LS Dunes record. This is so so good.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 17 November 2022 21:37 (three years ago)

The first time those "shoobie-doos" kicked in on "Sleep Cult" nearly ended me.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 17 November 2022 22:05 (three years ago)

Right? Was not expecting

calstars, Thursday, 17 November 2022 22:14 (three years ago)
