Mariah the Scientist has a really nice new EP out
― u swear (morrisp), Monday, 14 March 2022 23:14 (three years ago)
Yes! Thank you! Definitely going to check this out.
I almost started this the other day. Nicole Wray has another album under her Lady Wray alias. I checked out Piece of Me the other day and it's good! First few tracks were stellar and it's definitely in that "retro-" tradition, but it feels equal parts influenced by Motown and J Dilla. It left me with the thought that if there's such a thing as "record collection" rock in my attention span, surely there's room for an r+b equivalent.
Here's "Come On In" from Piece of Me. Maybe a bit corn and I can think of at least three classic songs it reminds me of, but none of them definitively and I think she's in peak voice here. I like it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrWJ0ktzqVs
Thanks again for making this.

Been listening a bit to Lucky Daye from New Orleans who is doing a US tour in April.
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 15:43 (three years ago)
But no new release from him
curmudgeon, I thought Lucky Daye's Painted was a solid album. Nothing amazing, but I really loved the track "Ready for Love." Candydrip was released on Friday, though I haven't listened to it yet. The first single "Over" is decent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylf8gJQe8So
Thanks for the reminder! I'm going to listen to Candydrip on my walk today.

― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 17:02 (three years ago)
Update: on first listen, I enjoyed Candydrip very much. Very dreamy production. First few tracks and last few tracks (especially "Fever") really got my attention. Looking at the rest of his Spotify now, he's been fairly prolific with collaborations over the past couple of years and this album definitely has a more pop slant to it. He has a sense of very self-aware humility about him that's nothing if not endearing. Second listen now and it's holding up. Not all the way sure what to make of him of him as yet, but definitely don't mind it while it's playing. "Feels Like" is probably the most accessible thing on the album, but it's an easy highlight for me.

I like the flip he’s doing on those iconic Ohio Players album covers. Honey becoming Candydrip. https://linkstorage.linkfire.com/medialinks/images/aabfcb3b-703c-4209-9e45-8b9588c07bd5/artwork-440x440.jpg

good album. the production is really nice. reminded me a bit of the victoria monet album from a few years ago in terms of being a slick but ultimately retro presentation of R&B while still having enough personality and ideas to make it feel like it's bringing something to the table. will need to listen a few more times for the songwriting to really stick w/ me but enjoyable listen
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 March 2022 21:16 (three years ago)
oh i see d'mile did essentially the whole album haha. i should've known
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 March 2022 22:49 (three years ago)
Daye sang a Sam Cooke song on American Idol once, and in press coverage I have seen other mentions of his interest in Marvin Gaye and others after he and his Mom left a church that instructed members not to listen to secular music.
Yes, production is nice on this new one.

Sorry to up this for something that's already been discussed but Lucky Daye's "Feels Like" is becoming one of my favorite songs of the year. Such an easy, carefree jam. The chorus is glorious and that partial rap verse at the end has just enough whimsy to be charming. I've had it on my current favorites playlist since the album came out and I like that song more every time it comes up.
― Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Sunday, 3 April 2022 17:58 (three years ago)
i'm surprised "over" is his mainstream breakthrough lol, i enjoyed it last year but overall not rly one of the stronger singles i've heard from him. still need to hear the album

Reading an enthusiastic review of Ravyn Lenae live reminds me I haven’t yet heard her new debut album
Lenae is touring in support of her long-awaited debut album, “Hypnos.” The 23-year-old emerged in the mid-2010s, self-releasing her first EP as a teen and collaborating with fellow Chicago upstarts like Noname and Mick Jenkins. In 2018 — just in time for Valentine’s Day — she released “Crush,” a pristine collection of glistening, lovesick funk produced by fellow R&B wunderkind Steve Lacy

Please go back to the Ravyn Lenae album, "Venom" in particular. Vocals are solid, very Janet Jackson, but the production is what has kept me coming back repeatedly throughout the year. Lots of off-kilter tracks with super cool bass sounds that contrast with her wispy vox.

very singular, deep late night vibe on a sky without stars on first listen. if you liked the singles, you'll like the album. really sparse, eerie bass grooves for the most part and oddly reminiscent of atliens beats at times. she has that subdued withdrawn vocal mannerism down perfectly and it probably isn't going to be everyone's thing, but i'm very into it.
