I have not done an artist poll in nearly two years now and this will be my eleventh overall. I have signed up for a few other ones and people have been waiting for some of those so sorry to those, but this is the one that called out to me to do this time around.

Ballot Part Number One (Mandatory) - Your Top 25 Daft Punk tracks (or less: min. 5). Collaborations are accepted here or those The Weeknd tracks. Please order your list with #1 at the top and #25 at the bottom, no need to number them. I will take unranked lists, just clearly state that yours is unranked.

Ballot Part Two (Optional) – Your Top 3 Albums and yes Tron: Legacy counts here (or less min. 2).

Ballot Part Three (Optional) - Your Top 7 Videos (or less min. 2).

Send ballots to: daftpunkpoll AT gmail dot com. Please include your username.

Voting is open until Sunday, April 10, 2022 Midnight Los Angeles time zone (Pacific Time).

Let’s also discuss how we are going to go about breaking out the live tracks. Do we want them separate or should they be merged them into the overall song?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 March 2022 18:14 (three years ago)

One last request, anyone want to help me out with images? I’m terrible at those types of things and this poll deserves some great images.

if a mod can help out with putting that in original post...thanks

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 March 2022 18:23 (three years ago)

this should be a lot of fun

nxd, Wednesday, 23 March 2022 18:46 (three years ago)

Thoughts on including their remixes - Scott Grooves, Gabrielle, Ian Pooley, etc?

What about solo work (Roulé, Crydamoure)?

Some of their best stuff falls in those caregories.

this is interesting and i want to see what the board wants to do. should we maybe replace the video aspect of this poll and instead do solo/remixes/live tracks in a separate poll? otherwise it could all just be combined in the main poll, thoughts?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 March 2022 22:42 (three years ago)

Tempted to send in an unearned ballot of the alive 2007 track list

hrep (H.P), Wednesday, 23 March 2022 22:48 (three years ago)

personally I'd like the remixes and solo stuff included in the main poll

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 23 March 2022 23:25 (three years ago)

Same, I love the Cryda stuff, to say nothing of the Stardust elephant in the room.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Wednesday, 23 March 2022 23:32 (three years ago)

They don't have a huge catalog anyway, I'd include solo work in the main poll. Figure Stardust can give most DP songs a run for their money

Vinnie, Thursday, 24 March 2022 00:55 (three years ago)

Looking forward to this.

kitchen person, Thursday, 24 March 2022 01:00 (three years ago)

I tend to think include solo stuff in the main poll but remixes in a side poll - it would be a good way of promoting the latter category to people who may not be familiar.

Tim F, Thursday, 24 March 2022 01:01 (three years ago)

i'd include their remixes of others' work in the main poll (there's not really enough for a side poll and they'd fit fine), but others' remixes of their work in a side poll if that's something that people want? solo stuff makes clear sense to include too with their catalogue being as small as it is

no idea what's a good option for the alive 2007 mashups etc., maybe just treat them as separate to their constituent tracks? trying to combine them with the album versions in any way would get way too messy

then i guess the question is where are you drawing the line with outside production & everything, the weeknd tracks are easy because they're "(feat. daft punk)" but then further out there's stuff the yeezus tracks they co-produced, the arcade fire tracks that bangalter co-produced, "nightcall" which de homem-christo co-wrote/produced, the list goes on. i guess an anything goes approach works fine there though, people will vote for stuff if it feels like it's relevant enough

ufo, Thursday, 24 March 2022 01:49 (three years ago)

I'd also say include solo releases/daft punk remixes in the main poll.

Is Gym Tonic eligible?

groovypanda, Thursday, 24 March 2022 07:37 (three years ago)

Is Gym Tonic eligible?

Yes, I think so. Not going to restrict anything I don't think.

Going to make a decision about all this sometime today.

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 March 2022 16:17 (three years ago)

Can I vote for their Essential Mix?

Indexed, Thursday, 24 March 2022 16:40 (three years ago)

Don't forget "So Much Love To Give"

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 March 2022 16:46 (three years ago)

glad I can vote for "Soul Bells"

aegis philbin (crüt), Thursday, 24 March 2022 21:14 (three years ago)

I'm going to keep things as is. I originally was only going to allow 20 songs but expanded it to 25 for this reason alone. I'm thinking this poll gives you a bonus of five songs. Everything is going into the main poll and there won't be any restrictions other then the songs needing to be Daft Punk related. Every track is going to be separated, so if you want you can vote for the live/remixed version of a song and the original as well on your ballot.

Bee OK, Friday, 25 March 2022 01:35 (three years ago)

Haven't taken part in one of these polls for ages, but this one deserves a go...

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Sunday, 27 March 2022 20:55 (three years ago)

Yes! I will have to try to find time to vote in this.

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 28 March 2022 18:52 (three years ago)

I thought this would be more popular, maybe it's not the right time for a Daft Punk poll.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 18:31 (three years ago)

Is there a nomination list that I’m missing?

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 21:21 (three years ago)

No. You don't need nominations for a single artist poll.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 21:49 (three years ago)

a list of notable solo/side project stuff to dig through would probably be helpful, i've never heard that stuff beyond the most obvious ones ("music sounds better with you"/"together") mostly and very little seems to be on streaming or anything

ufo, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 22:11 (three years ago)

I'll vote if this goes ahead

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 04:02 (three years ago)

As for solo/side projects, to start with,

Releases on Roule by Thomas Bangalter, Together, and Stardust

Releases on Crydamoure by Le Knight Club

Gym Tonic by Bob Sinclar

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 04:34 (three years ago)

whee, i need to remember to vote in this

Roz, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 05:36 (three years ago)

I will probably have a fair amount of Cryda on my ballot but I'll stick to just the stuff that has Guy-Manuel's direct participation.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 13:01 (three years ago)

Man, tho, this might be my favorite thing anyone remotely connected with DP did...

this is happening, more of an observation on my part but i think in the end the support will be there. hope im right

i have been looking around and yeah, a list is hard to come by. does anyone know of a list of songs so we can look for them on YouTube?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 18:19 (three years ago)

or post those here, as that works too

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 18:20 (three years ago)

It’s not elegant, but you can use their discogs page to see all the stuff they worked on

https://www.discogs.com/artist/424278-Guy-Manuel-de-Homem-Christo

https://www.discogs.com/artist/3775-Thomas-Bangalter

brimstead, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 19:39 (three years ago)

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2mbhnXvkj1Hn55iqAx6eNC

here's a playlist of nearly everything relevant I could find - side projects, solo work, notable collaborations (both solo & together), remixes for others. haven't included all of Sebatien Tellier's Sexuality, only the two tracks de Homem-Christo co-wrote in addition to producing, or the Arcade Fire tracks Bangalter co-produced because that's getting very marginal.

main stuff that's not on streaming is most Le Knight Club tracks, most Bangalter solo releases, and Crydajam - "If You Give Me The Love I Want"/"Playground"/"Loaded".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=videos

looks like nearly all the LKC stuff is here on Chedeville's youtube channels, including the three previously unreleased LKC tracks that he put out in 2015 ("Think Love Not Hate", "The Fight", "Crydamoure Sequence Emotion") which seem easy to miss

ufo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 00:23 (three years ago)

channel 1
channel 2

oh i forgot it does that to every youtube link even if it's not a video

ufo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 00:24 (three years ago)

lol one of the comps on spotify that had a lot of their solo tracks just got taken off streaming

ufo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 12:42 (three years ago)

That French Touch comp from only last year? Ugh, Fuck Spotify.

nashwan, Thursday, 31 March 2022 13:05 (three years ago)

OK, working up a ballot now while titles are still in my head.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 March 2022 13:13 (three years ago)

just noticed that the synth part in "too long"/"steam machine" is an interpolation of "smalltown boy", never realised before

ufo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 15:25 (three years ago)

Oh baby this is going to be fun. If the side projects and Crydamoure stuff is on the table this is going to be quite challenging.

For those who haven't yet heard them, the Crydamoure Waves Compilations are all time and loaded with tracks you'd likely place on your ballot. Le Knight Club is the Guy-Manuel side project that fronts the label iirc

octobeard, Thursday, 31 March 2022 16:25 (three years ago)

beepy fridges (sic), Saturday, 9 April 2022 07:27 (three years ago)

the only track I really enjoy from star to finish is Instant Crush. All the others had some annoying/deal-braker element

yeah, same. I kinda hate RAM, I could go on for several paragraphs in detail about it

brimstead, Saturday, 9 April 2022 15:24 (three years ago)

I voted, had to whittle down a shortlist of around 50 - so many good LKC and solo Bangalter tracks that I probably could have done a ballot just from those.

Couple of borderline-eligible tracks which I voted for anyway because they're great:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqKKpirLaCY
DJ Mehdi - Signatune (Thomas Bangalter Edit)
Tommy Bangs hasn't really done much editing here other than looping it up for a further 2 minutes (and possibly the kick drum is slightly chunkier?) but the Mehdi original is so good that I'm not sure what else he needed to do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi7tts7HTSY
Stuntmasterz - Holiday Sounds Better With You
I swear this was more ubiquitous than the original for a while, I worked in a record shop at the time and we were shifting hooky copies of this faster than they could press them, easily 10-20 copies a day for about 2 months. Justifiably so, it's one of the best mash-ups ever.

I'd also like to suggest POLLin' & Scratchin' for the results thread title.

Twelves, Saturday, 9 April 2022 15:56 (three years ago)

I was worried about turnout but things are looking better if still light compared to my other polls, please vote even if you want to only submit a five song ballot

Bee OK, Saturday, 9 April 2022 18:44 (three years ago)

i voted

aegis philbin (crüt), Saturday, 9 April 2022 22:51 (three years ago)

i'll submit something for sure, just need to finalise the order

the only track from ram i'm voting for is "fragments of time", that's the one track where they managed to have an interesting take on things. i'm mostly sympathetic to what they were going for with ram, even with it being such a conservative, rockist move, but it doesn't really live up to the era they were pastiching.

Not heard that before. Thanks for sharing.

Wasn't there some story that Banglater ended up just giving it to Prdyz?

groovypanda, Sunday, 10 April 2022 16:32 (three years ago)

As much as I enjoy and admire this group I don't think I can summon up strong enough opinions about their songs relative to each other to vote, sorry.

As it happens I only got round to RAM over the last two weeks. This post from BradNelson on the RAM poll captures very well part of how I have also felt about it.

i think the wrongness and the skeletal and drifting qualities of some of the pastiches actually contributes to my enjoyment of the record? you can hear the music they're aiming for spectrally, but it's impossible to precisely simulate, and the tension between those things is very rich imo

human after all is still a weird listen, really sounds like a first draft. there are plenty of good ideas but none of them are really developed in the way they've clearly been capable of in the past. recontextualising the tracks in alive 2007 does so much for them

I edited this album down to a 30 min version and it's much better. Because it's so loopy, it was actually a pretty easy edit. Songs end when it feels like they should have when they're not going to progress further.

octobeard, Sunday, 10 April 2022 19:04 (three years ago)

Finally stopped dithering and sent my ballot.

Gavin, Leeds, Sunday, 10 April 2022 20:02 (three years ago)

Wasn't there some story that Banglater ended up just giving it to Prdyz?

bangalter & falcon really didn't want to release their version (there was a lot of demand for them to put it out because it was an obvious hit) & prydz was just one of many guys who ripped it off but was the one who cleared the sample (well actually, getting winwood to re-record his vocals) and so his version could get a wider release and a big promotional push. one of the previous rips of it was by one of the guys from spacedust who made a whole career out of such blatant rips, including having a hit with a rip of "gym tonic" while the original was in sample clearance hell.

there's an interview where falcon says he doesn't really care that prydz ripped him off because they never wanted to put their version out, but he was a bit annoyed about being associated with prydz's version because it ended up so corny

ufo, Sunday, 10 April 2022 20:38 (three years ago)

yeah the prydz version really made me mad lol

the sound quality of RAM is fantastic and it is nostalgic and endearing, with so many great tracks, but also on another level it has a louche quality and feels kind of creepy and threatening

Might be way off here but I have come to actively dislike most of RAM. Its purpose seems to be to prove that popular music has lost something that was present in the magic of 70s disco, prog, soul, and funk rock. They named a song called "Give Life Back to Music" to make sure you knew the guitars weren't just a novelty, they were Important. The "life" missing in modern popular music is apparently multi-millionaire dollar studios and geriatric A-listers--iconoclasts in their time, perhaps, but now a living breathing "Teachers" in album form. Charming at first, and an unexpected diversion from their sample heavy house music, but now sounds to me like a bunch of rich old guys making studio music for industry people and live wedding bands to cover. More "Dad Rock" than any actual Dad Rock. I did vote for "Contact", and I do appreciate some of its weirder moments; but wish they'd called it quits after Alive 2007.

Indexed, Monday, 11 April 2022 15:59 (three years ago)

I love RAM but couldn't bring myself to vote for any tracks from it - maybe if the production were punchier

Bee OK, Monday, 11 April 2022 16:50 (three years ago)

I did make room for one RAM track on my ballot, which I believe was one more than I allowed HAA.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Monday, 11 April 2022 16:52 (three years ago)

I put a couple songs from RAM on the ballot, none from Human After All. As disappointing RAM was from a "soul" perspective, HAA lacked muscle and depth. Honestly, these guys are like the Icarus of house music: kissed the sun for 5 years, and the ensuing creative tumble back to earth seemed fatal. 90% of my ballot is pre-2005.
