97 Underground: The Beast from the East...Vol. 1

i noticed an old record store i used to frequent on a daily basis had this up on their wall, so i had to check it out. on my first listen.

wrathchild is pretty legit, on first listen.

syndly crunch is like an underground dream theater, but not as tight

holy shit the Mystic Force track "Burn the Sky" shreds, and i like the message

drummer busting out sextuplets on the bass drum like it's no big deal

yikes, this Shock Wave track is bad. maybe the "bad attitude" comes all the people who are getting irritated with listening to the song

i dislike a lot of the singing all over the comp. one thing with heavy metal, at least with me, is that you better shred and be fast. the drums should be pummeled, the pace should be relentless. in other words, i guess i like it when it's closer to thrash.

i feel bad for Mona Lisa, because the right half of the back cover reverses the format of the left from [band - track title] to [track title - band]. it's confusing, and if you're looking to find out who has that catchy lead track on the second side, you'd be forgiven for thinking they were called NIGHTMARE. but no, they were instead called Mona Lisa. On top of that, the designer of the back cover got very distracted while penning the words "Mona Lisa", so it's almost a puzzle to read.

the satanic part at the end of the Chapelz song is pretty outstanding

Child's Play was voted #1 Band in Maryland by the Maryland Musician's Reader's Poll in 1986 and 1987. I could imagine wayne and garth enjoying it quite a bit
