Impulsive choice is PP Arnold, with a nod to Joya Landis. Think the right answer is Bettye Swann.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 6 May 2022 21:33 (three years ago)

You missed out Mary Mason, she had a UK hit with it.

Mark G, Friday, 6 May 2022 21:34 (three years ago)

read that as Marilyn Manson unfortunately

lol the first version i knew was shaggy

i'm quite fond of juice newton's version, that's my vote

dyl, Saturday, 7 May 2022 03:15 (three years ago)

Be interesting to know if it's just me, but - I'm in the UK - this is genuinely the first time I've heard the Juice Newton version.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 7 May 2022 08:56 (three years ago)

This is kind of amazing to me. Although to be honest I have only heard two Juice Newton songs, and both seems to be pale copies of previous versions.

closer than my peeps you are to meee

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Saturday, 7 May 2022 12:56 (three years ago)

Juice Newton without hesitation. I dig her early '80s hits.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 May 2022 13:00 (three years ago)

plus cool name

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2022 13:48 (three years ago)

Heard the Juice version first.

But Evie Sands has the coolest voice for this song. The day I heard her version I instantly preferred it, so she gets my vote.

imo the key part of the song is the lyric "And if we're victims of the night / I won't be blinded by the light" going into the 2nd chorus. And I really like how P.P. Arnold treats that part.

can I vote for "Billy" in the TV show Outer Range?

sarahell, Saturday, 7 May 2022 14:53 (three years ago)

omg Connie Francis was offered this song first but turned it down. That's a missed opportunity.

Josefa, Saturday, 7 May 2022 14:55 (three years ago)

i wanna show the nation my appreciation

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 7 May 2022 15:23 (three years ago)

Joya Landis all day long

paolo, Saturday, 7 May 2022 16:34 (three years ago)

No Skeeter Davis?!? Her version is beautiful!

Still working through it, but so far it's Merrilee Rush for me.

Loud Tsu (I M Losted), Saturday, 7 May 2022 18:06 (three years ago)

The Juice Newton version is kinda saccharine but it's growing on me like (sugary) ivy.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 7 May 2022 19:39 (three years ago)

he's Jon Voight's brother and he also wrote... Wild Thing!

interesting guy

corrs unplugged, Sunday, 8 May 2022 09:34 (three years ago)

Had no idea Chip T was Jon V’s brother. Excellent stuff.

Mule, Sunday, 8 May 2022 10:25 (three years ago)

I just saw the Friends episode where Chrissie Hynde plays this song

Vinnie, Sunday, 8 May 2022 14:28 (three years ago)

Feel like I post this is all the time, but I have met one of Chip Taylor’s musical collaborators upon several occasions. Sometimes ask him fanboy questions and sometimes he even answers.

i have zoomed with pp arnold!

for a thing

mark s, Sunday, 8 May 2022 17:21 (three years ago)

When one Zooms or otherwise meets with PP Arnold does one call her 'PP'?

I can never quite square in my head that she sang on 'Poor Boy' by Nick Drake.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Sunday, 8 May 2022 17:42 (three years ago)

pat

she's not actually that keen on "pp", it was kind of foisted on her by management

For some reason, I was thinking that Crystal Gayle had done this and saw that this has already been covered: Crystal Gayle: S/D, C/D, etc.

My favourite version is the one that plays in my head, where the word “angel” is replaced with “asshole.”

Wonder why people suddenly got tired of this song 14 years ago

Josefa, Thursday, 12 May 2022 17:57 (three years ago)

I voted for PP Arnold, based on listening to the versions by Merrilee Rush, Juice Newton, Arnold, and Nina Simone back-to-back last night.

The shy Shaggy vote nearly won the day.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 13 May 2022 15:58 (three years ago)

Pre-vote polling oversampled boomers, everyone underestimated the mighty Shaggy voter.

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 May 2022 16:57 (three years ago)

It wasn’t me.

corrs unplugged, Saturday, 14 May 2022 07:29 (three years ago)

i remember being in a high school summer program in... 2007? one girl in the program from greece was riding with a few of us in someone's car and ended up playing the shaggy song at random (maybe on shuffle). i don't think she had heard it before but she instantly adored it and would hijack the ipod and put it on repeat every time she rode in the car with us thereafter. i think most ppl were somewhat annoyed but i thought it was amusing and didn't mind
