Could someone please define "electroclash" and make serious recommendations

also, what are the "bad" electroclash records that everyone should avoid for sake of good health? and when will this all go away

V, Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I _think_ it's lo-fi electro with the emphasis on feel and attitude rather than technical perfection. Should have some nice lyrics, preferably about sex.

I recomend The Teaches of Peaches, by Peaches, that's the only electro clash I've heard. And I love it.

It's the loudest album (on CD) that I own

meirion john lewis (mei), Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, sorry if this is really tired topic already

V, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

icy electro with vox, earlys 80sness, dress like you want to be in dusseldorf in 1981, jerky dancing, theatrical, camp, euro, references to sex, deapan vox

good:

1. golden boy & miss kittin ~ rippin kittin
2. swayzak ~ i dance alone

avoid:
peaches
fischerspooner

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you read the dozen or more other electroclash threads on ILM? I can provide links if you want.

Jeff W, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The pink-coloured Futurism compilation is fantastic. Two discs-worth of cracking stuff. Also Felix da Housecat's album Kitten and thee Glitz is brilliant.

Paul Cunningham, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

3. the dopplerefekt album
4. american gigolo (this compilation is probably a good introduction)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, that Felix/Kitten Glitz thing is great too, forgot I had that.

Gareth? Peaches are great! I bought the album and was immediately so happy I had to buy two giant peaches and eat them to give me enough energy to be even more happy.

meirion john lewis (mei), Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah yeah yeah !!
'rippin kittin' is ...just...*unbelievably* good.
do make sure u get the original, on the
12 " or cd single, the remixes r
ok but the orig. is genuinely a classic.

if u lived in manchester u could have got a promo
copy for a pound as i did, because *no-one* up here gives a flying one
about the leccy clash 'movement' perhaps explaining why
fischerspooner have mysteriously cancelled outright their
debut uk tour *.

* see romo: lack of people at manchester showcase gig of,
circa 1996 at the boardwalk. emptiest, draughtiest concert i ever
attended in the north.

piscesboy, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually ain't getting that much into Larry Tee's stuff (the originator of the electroclash term)
Lately I quite enjoyed the This Is Hardcore compilation from label God Made Me Hardcore (iamhardcore.com)
Also check Tiga's Turbo Studio Session Volume III and (coming in january) Tiga's DJ Kicks compilation on StudioK7!

I'll send a little playlist of electroclash and bastard relavive sounds later today.

V., Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Kittenz and Thee Glitz

Futurism

This Is Not the 80s.

American Gigolo is great but it's less electroclash mix than the two above I'd have said, it's more a DJ mix where the others are compilations kind of.

I've only heard Felix's mix a few times, what the hell is it called that one in the white and blue box, it was very good if memory serves.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd also say avoid Peaches but if your looking for the things that fall under "Elctroclash" I gather that her album and Chicks On Speed would be good places to start.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 28 November 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoyed that Electroclash CD free with Muzik (well I tore it off and nicked it!) a couple of months back. Does anybody here rate it?

David Gunnip, Thursday, 28 November 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, it's freakin ace. funnily enough i knicked the cd off the front of jockey slut 'cause i wanted a full unmixed version of m.mayer's "love is stronger than pride" which i first heard on...wait for it...the miss kittin muzik cd!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 28 November 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

In praise of Miss Kittin's 'Electroclash' Muzik mix-cd

Vee - click on "Search" at bottom of any ILM page, then type "kittin" in the first box (keyword search), then hit the search button. Result: all the electroclash info you could ever want.

zebedee, Thursday, 28 November 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i spelled nicked = knicked!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 28 November 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Have Fischerspooner full cancelled their tour? Is this the end? Despite them having ZERO songs I'd've liked to have gone to that to check out some waiflike hipster girls and whatever pantomine stuff that would've gone on onstage. And Manc does give a couple of flying ones about electroclash, see Stazi - Manc's own electroclash act. Not heard so I dunno if they're good or not.

Good electroclash songs:

Tiga and Zynsomethingsomething - Sunglasses at night

DMX Krew - Make me

Miss Kittin - all of the album she did with Hacker.

Yellow Note vs. Pukka - Naked, drunk and horny

See in theory that sounds just fine to me, since I was actually around that stuff at the time - jesus I even went to see The Berlin Blondes at an art college gig in 1979 haha - but in practice most of what I've heard of what's called 'electroclash' doesn't sound much like that atall. Instead, it's massively skewed towards more recent and late-80's-onwards electronic dance music sounds, structures, rhythms and sampling/mixing practices: I found the 'muzik' CD a huge disappointment - 90% just sounded like bog-standard somewhat tinny contemporary dance to me, with some gobby DJ shouting their name in the background every so often....(it had one or two decent tracks, and one fantastic one with a superb slap-snare sound, great arpeggiating sequence, lovely melody on top...but I think it was the track before this 'stronger than pride' thing that everyone else seems to rate).
I think Fischerspooner, whatever else they might have (not) going for them, at least manage to *sound* the part quite impressively - that album sounds to me like something that *could* have been made back in the early 80's, albeit it has the sheen of contemporary production on it.
(I played it 'blind' to an equally old friend of mine, who knows nothing atall about electroclash/FS, and he remarked during it a few times - 'hey that sounds like early D.mode' - 'oh that sounds like K/werk'.....he didn't make these connections with anything on that 'muzik' CD though)

Still, I need to hear more of it.

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

memoryboy 'there is no electricity' is fantastic. soviet's album is good but they are more standard synth-pop. they are playing here tonight on turkey day with the much dreaded mr. pac-man and golden ratio, uh.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Avoid Centuries. If you've got Suicide records, there's no need to ever hear 'em.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer 'Futurism 2' (green) to the original (pink), but it seems to have been ignored somewhat.

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 28 November 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Gareth that Swayzak track is grebt!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 November 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I ignored Futurism 2 cos I have about 4 electro comps already, which is too many. (I agree about the Swayzak track btw, good adult remix also)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 November 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Some people say Ladytron are electroclash. They don't. But they're still fab.

And...once again...I can't recommend Luke Slater's Alright On Top LP enough - accidental electroclash it is, but fuckin' marvellous it is too (lovely Ricky Barrow on vox).

Any International Deejay Gigolos comp is a good starting point.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 29 November 2002 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm ambivalent about the Alright On Top record actually - The Aloof always seemed like something of a partial eighties-revivalist project to me anyway (dark New Order meets Sabres of Paradise via Massive Attack), and Barrow + Slater as a combination is a kind of less distinctive version of same (The Aloof without dub, essentially?).

Sylvie Marks and Hal 9000 "Masturbation While Menstruation"

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 29 November 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I can warmly recommend you a pretty compilation made for a fashion shop in Paris called Colette. It's not all Electrocash-Post Post Punk, but there's a few gems of that genre in it...

I'm not so keen about this kind of compilations for lounge bars or hype places, but I 've got to admit this one is very good. Here's the spotless tracklisting compiled by a french guy called Michel Gaubert

1. MATHEMATIQUES MODERNES « disco rough »
2. RAPTURE « house of jealous lover »
3. PRIMAL SCREAM « authobahn 66 »
4. ANN STEEL « my time »
5. LCD SOUND SYSTEM « losing my edge »
6. SAVAS PASCALIDIS « superman »
7. LADYTRON (soulwax remix) « seventeen soulwax remix »
8. SCISSOR SISTERS « confortably numb »
9. KNIFEHANDCHOP « hooked on ebonics »
10. ZONGAMIN « spiral »
11. MIGNON « bad evil wicked and mean »
12. PLASTIQUE DE REVE « rodeo electric »
13. BOLLYWOOD FREAKS « last night bollywood saved my life »
14. SEELENLUFT « manila » (headman mix)
15. KREIDLER « circulus » Morceau caché :
16. WALDORF « the fashionis » (fashionistus sakkral choir)

There's also an exclusive 15 minutes mix from 2 Many DJs I haven't heard yet.

snowballing, Friday, 29 November 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

You can only buy this compilation on Colette's Website (www.colette.fr), but you can obvioulsy find it on Soulseek....

snowballing, Friday, 29 November 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

And by the way, isn't it time to launch a massive and severe backlash against DJ Hell and all his Gigolettes...
