You are voting for which of the two songs is the most RIDICULOUS, which one brings you the most joy in mocking Ed Kowalczyk's warbling, one which you can quote more than the other.

this is the Live deathmatch and only one will be left standing. you need to argue this one like a prosecutor, sorry.

Lightning Crashes may have the highest SAR of any Live song (Syllables Above Replacement), and he says words in way nobody else has never pronounced them in human history.

Lakini's Juice benefits from one of the simplest riff of all time and Ed howling about drinking water from the lady's room toilet.

this is going to be a hard one.

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 00:55 (three years ago)

Lightning Crashes has a way better chorus

brimstead, Friday, 3 June 2022 01:04 (three years ago)

lightning crashes vs. i alone might be a contest

this is not

mookieproof, Friday, 3 June 2022 01:06 (three years ago)

and not least because the lightning crashes video featured 'philip chancellor' from 'the young and the restless'

mookieproof, Friday, 3 June 2022 01:09 (three years ago)

I heard this recently and was kind of stunned https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-_0wyKi1a4

JoeStork, Friday, 3 June 2022 01:48 (three years ago)

gotta vote for the juice

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 3 June 2022 02:32 (three years ago)

let me riiiiiiiiiiide >>> anything that happens in lightning crashes

It's hard for me to be objective about Live because Throwing Copper was my favorite album in the world in 1996 when I was 10. That didn't last long, but I still think it holds up better than like 90% of alt-rock from that era.

Listening to "Lightning Crashes" now it still sounds beautiful and cathartic to me. If you can handle the over-the-top earnestness, I guess. I do think the faux-R.E.M. bridge is unnecessary--they could have just rode the chorus out after the last verse and shaved a minute off. On the other hand, breaching the 5-minute mark imparts "epic" status...

"Lakini's Juice" sounded bizarre and kind of scary to me in 97. Still sounds edgy and menacing, but also sublimely ridiculous. The riff/beat goes SOOO hard though...

Going with LC

xpost i relate completely. i grew up with the most absurd grunge vocal stylings in the ether around me--90s rock radio, home cd collection sourced from the columbia house catalog--so they bypassed my critical judgment and therefore 'lightning crashes' is a portal straight back to my 10-year-old self's earnest idea of adult emotions, experienced while looking out the window on the way to soccer practice, for example. in general i find this post-grunge era's clumsily cathartic masculine emoting to be campy and oddly affecting in a late period michael mann kinda way

^ So OTM re: clumsily cathartic masculine emoting

J. Sam, Friday, 3 June 2022 03:45 (three years ago)

xps I just listened to "Deep Enough" and.... absolutely nothing could have prepared me for that. Holy shit.

This insane version of "Lightning Crashes" with samples of news coverage of the Timothy McVeigh Oklahoma City bombing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_XYCdLWuu8

Was this ever officially released? I remember this getting a fair amount of radio play in the Midwest in 1995, though maybe some ambitious DJ put this together.

I like all three of these songs (and now have a strong desire to give Throwing Copper a relisten), but "Lightning Crashes" wins most ridiculous for me. My friend and I had so much fun singing "eyeyeyeyeyes" back in middle school

Vinnie, Friday, 3 June 2022 05:12 (three years ago)

You could post a good chunk of “Latino’s Juice” into a Clickhole-style “Ed Kowalczyk said WHAT???” article and most people would assume it was a Clickhole original

castanuts (DJP), Friday, 3 June 2022 10:17 (three years ago)

I gotta know if “Latino’s Juice” was on purpose or the best autocorrect I’ve seen in a minute.

Chris L, Friday, 3 June 2022 10:35 (three years ago)

DJP meant "Bikini's Juice"

Vinnie, Friday, 3 June 2022 12:39 (three years ago)

live should really put out their own kombucha called “lakini’s juice”

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 3 June 2022 12:50 (three years ago)

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 13:06 (three years ago)

these couldn't have been farther from ridiculous to me when they came out (they were rad and sad, respectively), but I guess I accept it now. right?

lmao goddammit

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 3 June 2022 16:07 (three years ago)

xpost I always thought Lakini's Juice was badass when it came out, although used to giggle over the lyrics, but the first time I heard "Lightning Crashes" (before it was a single), I asked my friend if he was sitting on a washing machine while he sang

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 16:14 (three years ago)

“Latino’s Juice”

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 16:19 (three years ago)

lol this thread is gold.

anyway voted for latinos juice

Spottie, Friday, 3 June 2022 21:15 (three years ago)

Lakini's Juice runs away with this. Total commitment to the bit, zero irony.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 3 June 2022 21:32 (three years ago)

wait is there irony in lightning crashes

mookieproof, Friday, 3 June 2022 21:36 (three years ago)

people certainly liked it ironically

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 21:42 (three years ago)

(not ILX, who loves it full-throatedly)

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 21:42 (three years ago)

No, but Lakini’s Juice is heavier and even dumber, more ripe for a band to wink at you.

Freaks is even dumber and has a straight-faced Clockwork Orange video, shameful that’s it not part of this poll.

Ed Kowalczyk totally was the guy that said something insane when the music cut out at a party and had to spend an hour cross-legged on the floor with his friends furiously explaining what he actually meant before the big lunkhead in the corner knocks his lights out

brimstead, Friday, 3 June 2022 22:04 (three years ago)

that one's a legit good tune.

"Heropsychodreamer" is pretty funny

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 22:07 (three years ago)

I thought "Overcome" was the worst, esp when they retroactively shoehorned it to be about 9/11.

These guys were the alt-rock kings of corn, but I'll admit that "Shit Towne" resonated with me when I was 17 and stuck in a terrible small town.
