Look, Prekop and Sea & Cake itself never quite worked for me, what I’ve heard, while I’m a serious Tortoise fan who’s spent a lot of time with McEntire solo stuff.

What a pleasant surprise Sons Of is: no vocals (I don’t think?); just warm rubbery rhythmic explorations, sometimes earwormy that are easy to get lost in.

Oh, this is marvelous.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 9 June 2022 10:50 (three years ago)

yeah this is stellar

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 9 June 2022 11:38 (three years ago)

I like the first track. It's been interesting to see Prekop evolve as an electronic musician. Each release seems to get more and more focused (and I hear a lot McEntire's stamp on this too).

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 9 June 2022 16:53 (three years ago)

I thought the year in the title was 2002

calstars, Thursday, 9 June 2022 17:41 (three years ago)

time doesn't exist, so yes i see 2002 as well.

I'm ANTIFA and I vote. (Austin), Thursday, 9 June 2022 18:26 (three years ago)

This sounds great.

TIOJR: Sam Prekop was born in the UK.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 9 June 2022 19:24 (three years ago)

That’s pretty slick, hope there’s a vinyl release

frogbs, Thursday, 9 June 2022 21:16 (three years ago)

one month passes...

no vinyl as yet, tho there was a limited-to-100 cassette that's already gone.

and yeah: this is good. vaguely reminiscent of caverns of anti-matter and other nameless 90s white label downtempo jams. already been bnm'd too. good lookin, phil.

hahaha love the album cover

frogbs, Saturday, 30 July 2022 23:14 (three years ago)

oh man this is sweet

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 30 July 2022 23:48 (three years ago)

yeah its good. never in a million years would've guessed who made it

frogbs, Saturday, 30 July 2022 23:51 (three years ago)

at some points, it feels like a mixtape of sea and cake demos. like i'm thinking of songs like "new patterns", "inn keeping", "fuller moon", "the invitations" — those songs they sometimes do that morph towards the end into synth vamps. this album is full of just those parts. it's really fun.

Just cottoned on to this album, I love it. Sorta Lindstrom vibes on some of it.

Weird. Can't find a copy in the UK (well, I've looked online in four shops).

djh, Saturday, 3 September 2022 09:04 (two years ago)

I don’t know about LPs, but CDs were apparently limited to …. 100 copies! Yikes. Keeping my fingers crossed for a reissue, eventually.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 4 September 2022 12:31 (two years ago)

It was the cassette that was limited to 100, the CD is "very limited" but the quantity was never clarified.

Evan, Sunday, 4 September 2022 13:31 (two years ago)

Ah, my mistake! Thanks.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 4 September 2022 14:17 (two years ago)

Every time I play this I hear some new element.

It really is

Tim F, Saturday, 17 September 2022 05:02 (two years ago)

Weird. Convinced myself that I pre-ordered The Sparrow but can't find any evidence of this, at all! This happens more than it should ...

djh, Saturday, 17 September 2022 07:44 (two years ago)

Oh, I did. Boomkat has it in the UK.

djh, Saturday, 17 September 2022 07:47 (two years ago)

I just ordered the CD from Amoeba, $19.99, free shipping

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 19 September 2022 19:20 (two years ago)

Sons Of would make for a neat little 10" imo

Evan, Monday, 19 September 2022 19:27 (two years ago)

dunno if you could get a 23 minute track on a 10"

you could do a 10" + 12". wonder how many albums actually get released that way.

frogbs, Monday, 19 September 2022 19:53 (two years ago)

Oh right

Evan, Monday, 19 September 2022 20:19 (two years ago)

Just realized that (unless something changes between now and year’s end) I’m gonna wind up with two albums featuring members of Tortoise in my top ten album’s list

This probably has happened before, but it’s been a while

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 11:53 (two years ago)

I was very surprised to see that this wasn't nominated for the EOY poll, thought people were really into this record

it was, i voted it

Oh cool

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 23 January 2023 15:45 (two years ago)

i figured other folks would rep for it. i liked it, but was just into other stuff in the second half of the year.

but ya: it's fun, good, and worthwhile.

"i'm grateful." (Austin), Monday, 23 January 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

I'll admit it's a while since I've listened to it, but my memory of a golden summer evening with it was enough to win my vote.

I didnt realize they made a vinyl pressing of this, might have to grab that

frogbs, Sunday, 31 March 2024 19:22 (one year ago)

I must check this out. It totally passed me by at the time. I've been listening to Prekop's "Comma" album a lot lately again. That was a lockdown favourite.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 2 April 2024 19:22 (one year ago)

This allbum is so so good

Davey D, Tuesday, 2 April 2024 19:55 (one year ago)

yeah, it's one of my all-time "not my normal zone but i love this so, so much" albums.

alpine static, Tuesday, 2 April 2024 20:57 (one year ago)

co-sign. I'd normally listen to something like this once or twice, but this one really withstands unlimited repeats.
(another album in this sweet spot for me is also a tortoise-adjacent project: Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy)

enochroot, Tuesday, 2 April 2024 21:31 (one year ago)

thread revive prompted a revisit: yep, still good as heck. so satisfying too ― even for these guys, it's a peak.

cover also has me thinking of a thread idea: album covers that perfectly represent the music.

(maybe it's already been done?)

(also i may be speaking from experience: mute the proper audio + play this album as the soundtrack for a "funny cats" compilation youtube video. it works.)

hey friends,

don't know the most appropriate place to share this so putting it here. sam's limited vinyl-only score for the 2013 indie film pavilion. share around as you wish. sorry about all the vinyl surface noise:

riyl if you like the dreamiest+prettiest parts of old punch card. he sings on a few of the tracks.

loosely connected: since digging out my external drive and getting access back to some non-streaming music, i'm revisiting his japan-only ep from 2021 and the last two tracks are at least as good as anything on sons of.
