On last week's episode of The Best Show, Tom Scharpling challenged listeners to call in and pitch their choices for perfect albums, and one caller suggested the self-titled debut by The Undertones. Tom commented that it was one of those albums that plays like a Greatest Hits set, and what can you do but agree?

I suspect "Teenage Kicks" is most people's go-to pick for this band, but "Get Over You" was one of my mix-tape/CD staples for years, so I have to go with that. Could just as easily have thrown my vote at "Male Model" or "Jimmy Jimmy."

Love the Undertones. "I Know a Girl" is my vote, but my favourite was "Smarter Than U," a B-side (to "Teenage Kicks") that didn't make the album.

Hadn't heard that before; thanks! A better Undertones B-side than "Casbah Rock," which actually isn't a B-side but a) sounds like one, and b) is the only song on the record that even comes close to shutting down the whole perfect album/Greatest Hits collection claim.

Get Over You is my favourite and what a performance:

Said it before, but that was the track which made you know that The Undertones were gonna be around for a while, not just one song.

“Get over you”

I like the Mars candy bar song that’s a bonus track on the Ryko CD.

That "Get Over You" live clip is ferocious.

Just finally clicked on that live "Get Over You." And now I will have to click again.

I believe “Teenage Kicks” was on the Derry Girls soundtrack, but maybe it’s another one.

the expanded edition is ridiculous - a dozen or so extra tracks and it just never really get bad or lazy or not fun.
(I think I voted Here Comes the Summer)

I would have voted "Jimmy Jimmy" (ohhhhhhhhhh) if I'd remembered to vote.

Haven't listened to this for over 35 years, but just from reading the song titles I can hear each track in my head, esp. the bassline of Jump Boys.

one year passes...

Question for Undertones fans:

There were two studio versions released of "Here Comes the Summer":

- side 1, track 7 of the original LP
- a re-recorded single version that replaced the above as side 1, track 8 of the re-released LP on Sire

I don't have either LP, so which version comes to a stop with a final chord, and which one fades out?

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 31 August 2023 03:27 (two years ago)

Original LP version: ends with a chord.
Version on "All Wrapped Up" (which I assume is the re-recorded version you mention rather than some rogue third version): fades.

Tim, Thursday, 31 August 2023 09:27 (two years ago)

Thanks. All Wrapped Up seems to be the 45 versions of all the songs. I would have guessed that version was the re-recording because it sounds slightly slicker than all the tracks from the LP session.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 31 August 2023 14:14 (two years ago)

Yep "All Wrapped Up" was the singles As&Bs that came out shortly after the band split, so that's the single version (as I say, I couldn't be 100% sure it's that version that ended up on the reissued LP because I don't have a copy of the reissue, but it seems a reasonable assumption).

The cover of "All Wrapped Up" is truly terrible.

Tim, Thursday, 31 August 2023 15:06 (two years ago)

Interesting, I never knew that. I have one of the expanded CDs and it's got the single version but the original LP version is on the compilation "1979: Revolt Into Style".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 31 August 2023 20:54 (two years ago)

Expanded CD of the debut album, that is.

re: "and one caller suggested the self-titled debut by The Undertones. Tom commented that it was one of those albums that plays like a Greatest Hits set,"
for a long time I'd only ever listened to "Very Best of the Undertones" and indeed almost all the songs are on there, but they did leave out "(She's a) Runaround" and they should not have!

I wonder if there was some money reason why they didn't just include the entire album, because it's practically already on there:
