Horrible '20s Album Titles Like...

Drake released pretty much house album and I am living. This one’s for the aunties who dance. I am an auntie who dances. Good knees only on the dance floor. pic.twitter.com/yX73MuxBGB

I’m 7 songs in to this Drake album and I feel like I’m at Zara trying on jackets

exclusive hot ilm take: this album sucks.

I love this so much

This is the Drake I love.

Sounds like "Passionfruit" the album - I'm into it.

well, that does sound promising

don’t tell me both Drake *and* Beyoncé are going the amapiano way this summer

don't make me want to hear this!

ufo, Friday, 17 June 2022 12:06 (three years ago)

No amapiano on the album, breastcrawl, but Black Coffee exec produced it and has some tracks on it. I'm actually surprised he didn't at least try to put a piano track on here.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 17 June 2022 12:31 (three years ago)

now I’m imagining afrohouse purist Black Coffee fighting tooth and nail to prevent Drake from getting wind of the hot, hip and happening sounds on the streets and in the clubs of Mzansi.

apparently tresor contributes vocals to a few tracks

The few times I find Drake compelling is when he’s doing songs like Hotline Bling or Passionfruit. If this is “Passionfruit, the album” I’m going to love it.

I’m actually kinda enjoying a Drake album in full

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 17 June 2022 14:54 (three years ago)

This is kind of pleasant but there’s nothing that reaches the heights of passionfruit.

Could do with some guest features. Drake’s ambien vocals do a weird contrast and feel a bit tiresome on a full on dance album.

makes me excited for the new Beyonce record and how its being described. Did the big movers just decide that house is the move?

“Morale for Big Steppers”

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 17 June 2022 18:28 (three years ago)

i want to like this bcuz he's made great house pop songs before but i'm not finding a ton to grasp onto here. i feel like he fell off from a songwriting perspective or ran out of ideas for songs. or is trying to make an actual dance record which... yeah. it's definitely better than scorpion and certified lover boy but that's clearing a bar that is lying on the floor. compared to "take care," "passionfruit," "get it together" i don't find this all that engaging sadly

J0rdan S., Friday, 17 June 2022 23:17 (three years ago)

i'm glad you guys brought up the amapiano thing, it's interesting. he posted about uncle waffles on IG a month or two ago, so he's still plugged in to some extent. i feel like the issue per se is that amapiano is, like, actual club music, whereas this sorta tasteful deep house functions outside of clubs and thus is more approachable for someone (drake) who i assume doesn't actually go dancing to house music at clubs

J0rdan S., Friday, 17 June 2022 23:20 (three years ago)

i listened to this after the warriors won so im gonna need to listen again when my head is clear

Spottie, Friday, 17 June 2022 23:31 (three years ago)

tend to agree with Jordan S here. a club(bing) record this is not. listened to it last night, not super attentively I’ll admit, more hoping/expecting that something would jump out and grab me, and while there was some nice stuff, that never really happened.

also it’s a real shame he can’t be bothered to credit people when they won’t generate extra streams for him, cf Tresor on “Down Hill” vs 21 Savage on “Jimmy Cooks”.

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 18 June 2022 07:47 (three years ago)

btw the Uncle Waffles thing, based on that article, comes across more as grooming than anything musical.

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 18 June 2022 07:53 (three years ago)

yea now that I've spent some time with it, it's nice enough but nothing quite at the height of "Passionfruit". Probably like "Massive" the most which is some decent house music business.

yesca, Saturday, 18 June 2022 09:55 (three years ago)

"massive" is like, fine but it's no "passionfruit" yeah

feels like he should have attempted this sort of album years ago

ufo, Saturday, 18 June 2022 10:35 (three years ago)

I like this album

I'm mostly hearing the criticism that he doesn't sound v engaged on these songs but imo it's exactly the right amount, considering it's Drake we're talking about here and the type of music on this album

Murgatroid, Saturday, 18 June 2022 15:09 (three years ago)

At first I thought it was boring average stuff (I didn’t care at all for his previous album) but after listening to it more I like its smooth vibe as a soundtrack for some late summer night swimming pool after parties (things I never do of course !). I’m still getting familiar with the songs but there are many moments I find very cool. Like « Down Hill » (I could easily imagine a single remix of that one) or the squeaky bed track (although I haven’t decided yet if I find that sound fun or annoying..).

An underrated talent of Drake is his ability to make me exhausted just by reading his album titles

I just thought one of the reasons why I like this album a lot although it’s not great and doesn’t really have hits is because I hear it as a kind of alt OST to… Miami Vice (the movie) !
It’s more about atmospheric moments that are very « visual » to me than songs.
Anyway I’ve been listening to it a lot lately and it perfectly fits my current too warm/exhausting summer mood.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 22 June 2022 16:55 (three years ago)

I really like the "Sticky" + "Massive" combo.

deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Wednesday, 22 June 2022 18:54 (three years ago)

this is the most listenable drake album in a long time though it still has a feeling of wasted potential, it's onto something at times but doesn't quite deliver

ufo, Wednesday, 22 June 2022 19:16 (three years ago)

maybe he should have marketed it as a "mixtape" or w/e

Murgatroid, Wednesday, 22 June 2022 19:20 (three years ago)

yeah, it really feels like a mixtape or something.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 23 June 2022 09:45 (three years ago)

like the frustrating thing about this album is there's the bones of an actual good drake album here rather than it just being tiresome in the usual drake way

"falling back" is a very weird single choice because it's like, a moody bridge section stretched out to the length of a full song and that probably could have worked in the right context but as the single & first song on the album it just comes across as half-formed

i really like "down hill" though

ufo, Thursday, 23 June 2022 15:08 (three years ago)

it just comes across as half-formed

and that applies to the whole album imo.
"Down Hill" is the perfect example of this : it's my favourite track but it seems amazing to me that no one involved in this project could see how that could be a GREAT single with more work/instrumentation...
It's so obvious that when I listen to it I can HEAR the missing arrangements !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 23 June 2022 15:17 (three years ago)

the difference is that "down hill" still really works as it is but i get what you mean yeah

ufo, Friday, 24 June 2022 00:40 (three years ago)

“Falling back” is a weird single yeah, it’s one of the weakest tracks in here.

“Jimmy Cooks”, “Sticky” and “Massive” are the obvious choices for singles imho.

“Down Hill” and “Tie that binds” could work too. Really like those two - I agree “Down Hill” could have been an even better song with some work.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 24 June 2022 17:22 (three years ago)

Opening tracks are the ones I don’t really care for… album really gets on track for me Sticky onwards.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 24 June 2022 17:24 (three years ago)

Sticky onwards every song has hit potential. Forgot “Overdrive” that one is also an obvious single…. I really don’t get why choose “falling back” when there’s at least 5 better choices for singles in here.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 24 June 2022 17:28 (three years ago)

Yeah « overdrive » is pretty good. Also I » quite fond of the end of « calling my name ». So far I agree that the second half of the album is the strongest.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 24 June 2022 20:05 (three years ago)

Also agree that « Jimmy Cooks » is quite obvious as a single (especially the first part). Actually back to my movie OST comparison, it’s very different from the rest of the album and as the final track I see/hear it as a end credits music!

based on this i've gone back to "passionfruit" a few times. what a great song, i like it even more than i did at the time.

"massive" is definitely a retread but there's enough there that it's growing on me.

nb i've totally stayed away from drake for the most part so my opinion isn't based on much

dyl, Wednesday, 6 July 2022 14:30 (three years ago)

have to say i really didn't expect a pop star to adopt like spencer parker piano house right now, feels like i'm finally having the experience where "the thing i'm into" is being coopted for a momentary fad and i see how people get bummed out by it lol.
