haha I'm the only fucker answering yr threads Bob - where is Julio when you need him!

The only two albs by Ruins I've heard are the ones they made w/Bailey, and I really wasn't that thrilled by 'em. Too prog for me, I think, too many time changes and wibbly/clever bits. Much prefer Musica Transonica, Mainliner or good old High Rise.

What (very little) I've heard definitely wasn't as good as Burning Stone. Burning Stone ownz.

But I'm gonna give the new one a listen just as soon as this damn Opeth song ends!

I thought the new one was kinda disappointing, actually...

Most similar to, er...their last one. I think Yoshida has permanently left behind the sound of Masuda-era albums (makes sense, because Masuda has permanently left behind Ruins). You could make the argument that Tzomborgha is their best since Hydero, but that's not really saying much because other than Symphonica (which I happen to love, but a lot of other people think is too proggy), they haven't really dropped an undisputed masterpiece since then.

Definitely doesn't sound like Burning Stone or Stonehenge. Anyone notive that Hisashi Sasaki doesn't use any distortion on his bass (but does do a lot of pedal stuff with octaves, effects, etc thereby making me ask, "why not bring in a guitarist?" -- but the joke's on my, all those Ruins bassists were really guitarists in the first place) -- old Ruins was like thrash prog, new Ruins is like super-brain RIO. But everyone knows all the real money is Koenjihyakkei anyway.

''haha I'm the only fucker answering yr threads Bob - where is Julio when you need him!''

hehe andrew I'm here!

haven't got a single thing by them but have heard a track and its basically magma/univers zero type stuff.

There seems to be little beyond 'funny' time signatures but I'll prob give it a go someday.

i actually listen to koenjihyakkei, whereas the ruins (excepting a few songs on "burning stone") just make my tits ache. zeuhl 4 ever.

New Koenji is awesome. The second track is easily one of the best things Yoshida has ever been involved in, with those synths right out of "Tom Sawyer" or somethin'. But the production is a little thin, especially on the drums of all things!

And now that I've listened to the new Ruins, yeah, it is a bit underwhelming. A little too clean for my tastes, though when things get spacy, the album improves. But Burning Stone 4eva.

damn - cos i thought "hydero..." was one of the worst things they ever did w/ its anaemic m.bisi production, dud tunes n all... oh well...

bob snoom, Saturday, 30 November 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

new Sax Ruins CD in Ipecac is cool. Concept is simple, but all the saxes are overdubbed, so it's more like a big band w/only saxes playing Ruins tunes.

yes. it's amazing. strong album of the year contender for me.

ruinzhatova's "close to the edge" is one of the best covers ever
