I recently moved from Houston to Savannah and drove a moving truck loaded with our stuff which included 3,000+ records. The problem that you can't stack record boxes very high because they're so dang heavy. I realized that a small cardboard box (not the Uhaul small, it's more like the size of a banker's box) will fit perfectly inside the cube of an IKEA record shelf. I have 8 KALLAX units, the ones with 8 cubes. I reinforced the back of them with 3/16" masonite to make them stronger and stacked one unit on top of another, each cube loaded with a box of records. Between that and all of the books I'm pretty sure the UHAUL was overweight.
We were going to use Upack which is sort of like PODS. They have a 6’ x 7’ x 8’container that might be cheaper than paying movers. For us it would have been cheaper than hiring a moving service and we would have been able to load the unit ourselves. It fell through because we required storage and their storage facilities were full, but it might make sense for you to do it that way. That way you can make sure it is packed and handled the way you want.
