THE LONELIEST TIME 💌 Oct 21. I’m quite fascinated by loneliness. It can be really beautiful when you turn it over and look at it. Just like love, it can cause some extreme human reactions.

well the new single "beach house" is quite the pivot from "western wind". just about stays on the right side of quirky i think. insanely sticky chorus - it's giving aqua

i wish she didn't give the quirkiest lines to some random men, i think she'd sell "i've got a lake house in canada and i'm probably gonna harvest your organs" a lot better!

uberweiss, Thursday, 4 August 2022 15:47 (two years ago)

hmm this is mediocre

ufo, Thursday, 4 August 2022 22:07 (two years ago)

Where are y'all located? It's not out in US Eastern yet :(

J. Sam, Thursday, 4 August 2022 23:07 (two years ago)

I thought "Western Wind" was hinting that the album was going in a more chill direction, but now this one... Aqua is a good comparison. Catchy but pretty lightweight

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 00:19 (two years ago)

I'll be honest, my expectations were lowered once I saw the album art. Haven't heard Beach House yet, and I'm still unenthused by Western Wind, so I'm holding a wait-and-see position.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 5 August 2022 02:30 (two years ago)

Yeah, I'm not sure about this one. Weird to hear her come out with such a weak chorus.

kitchen person, Friday, 5 August 2022 02:31 (two years ago)

i'd take "good time" over "beach house" really

ufo, Friday, 5 August 2022 04:07 (two years ago)

was expecting a lot worse based on the reaction to it

Murgatroid, Friday, 5 August 2022 04:23 (two years ago)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 5 August 2022 04:27 (two years ago)

the more i listen the more i hate it

ufo, Friday, 5 August 2022 04:31 (two years ago)

Three times was my limit. Fortunately I doubt I'm in any danger of ever hearing this in the wild, so I may never hear it again.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 5 August 2022 04:45 (two years ago)

Aqua is a good comparison

You have my attention.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 5 August 2022 09:48 (two years ago)

Can’t see the Aqua comparison. Sounds like a decent but not great CRJ track.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 5 August 2022 09:58 (two years ago)

there's a plastic, uber-catchy, 90s europop vibe to the chorus that reminded me of something like aqua

uberweiss, Friday, 5 August 2022 10:10 (two years ago)

Oh it def reminds me of them, the europop vibe. Also male/female vocals with quirky lyrics

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 10:27 (two years ago)

She comes out with bad songs sometimes. Party for One was a rough introduction to the Dedicated era for me. I was very relieved when it didn't actually end up on the record. I liked Cut to the Feeling at first but it really is just a chorus, isn't it? Let's Be Friends had that stupid dick joke/laugh in the middle. What were you thinking, Ms. Jensen?

Anyway, I don't think this is one of her bad ones! It definitely sounds musically out of character as far as her past few records. It's not like, sophisticated Carly. But I think it's a fun, funny song. If I have a criticism of it, it's that at 2:30 it gets in and out too quickly, much like the 2:41 Want You In My Room from Dedicated. I really think it could have used one more verse about boys number 5 and 8 or something. I really like the guy background singers on the chorus and bridge. So yeah, I'm on Team Beach House.

peace, man, Friday, 5 August 2022 11:19 (two years ago)

her worst song is that one christmas song she put out, just the pits

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 5 August 2022 12:05 (two years ago)

or let’s be friends, which i had completely forgotten about

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 5 August 2022 12:06 (two years ago)

Thought you meant her cover of "Last Christmas", Brad, until I looked it up. The lyrics of "It's Not Christmas Til Someone Cries" have put me off wanting to hear the song

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 12:25 (two years ago)

I'm not even a scrooge about Christmas music, but yeah, It's Not Christmas Til Somebody Cries is a stinker.

peace, man, Friday, 5 August 2022 12:30 (two years ago)

all of these terrible songs are on streaming and yet utter jam “me and the boys in the band” still isn’t, it’s a cruel world

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 5 August 2022 12:39 (two years ago)

love the lyric of the new one but do not enjoy it musically, it made me think of jessie j and typing this sentence has made me depressed

cut to me in october saying “beach house sorta works in context” lol

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 5 August 2022 13:38 (two years ago)

lol

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 5 August 2022 13:55 (two years ago)

don't even hate the song as much as some of you but if the song works in context, then i'd be worried about the album

Murgatroid, Friday, 5 August 2022 14:43 (two years ago)

This sounds more like Black Eyed Peas than Aqua and it sucks.

Hope Western Wind is a better indication of what the album sounds like.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 5 August 2022 15:19 (two years ago)

xp Well, the next track is about what gets done with those organs

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 15:20 (two years ago)

Listening again and it’s worse than Black Eyed Peas. It sounds like a DNCE song.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 5 August 2022 15:39 (two years ago)

This is giving me deja vu to the time Taylor Swift released ME! as the lead single for Lover
(Beach House is better than that, but I was hoping for more of a Warm Blood vibe for this album)

enochroot, Friday, 5 August 2022 18:54 (two years ago)

That was disappointing. It doesn't flow - the chorus grinds to a halt with "I'm probably going to hurt your feelings" and then the song seems to start again. It's just irritatingly stop-start. The middle eight doesn't work. It has surprisingly little Carly Rae Jepsen in it.

I enjoyed "I Want You In My Room" because it flowed well, it had some clever chords, and the production was retro without being overpowering. The chorus was like a one-two punch - it came in two parts, with the second part acting like a bonus chorus, a pleasant surprise. In contrast "Beach House" has a weak single-part chorus that just brings the song to a halt.

It has nothing to do with Aqua. It's not in the same league as Aqua. Aqua was genius. You, "Beach House", are no Aqua. If anything this song reminded me of how well-written "Happy Boys and Girls" was. To this day I still can't tell if the melancholic undercurrent running through that song was deliberate was real or exists only inside my head.

I still have faith in Carly Rae Jepsen but I fear she has been led astray. I'm not suggesting she should be kidnapped and forced to work with Mark Ronson. Kidnapped is such a loaded word. Enticed, with cheese.

Ashley Pomeroy, Friday, 5 August 2022 19:06 (two years ago)

brad otm about it sounding like jessie j lol

ufo, Friday, 5 August 2022 19:15 (two years ago)

the first track on this is kinda reminiscent of "1 thing" but chiller? jazzier? she's never made anything that sounded at all like this before

ufo, Friday, 21 July 2023 04:34 (one year ago)

wow "after last night" !

ufo, Friday, 21 July 2023 04:40 (one year ago)

this is very much an outtakes collection in that there is some wild stylistic variation and quality is a bit inconsistent but the highs are excellent and it's nice to hear her go relatively out there

ufo, Friday, 21 July 2023 05:09 (one year ago)

did this leak or something

Murgatroid, Friday, 21 July 2023 14:58 (one year ago)

did not expect from "shy boy" that this would contain some of the most daring music of her career

"shadow" ;_;

ivy (BradNelson), Friday, 21 July 2023 15:31 (one year ago)

"put it to rest" is going to be my favorite crj song of all time for a while. thinking of it as an indirect sequel to "warm blood," where that took place on the inside this one's on the outside, cool air rushing across bare skin

ivy (BradNelson), Friday, 21 July 2023 15:52 (one year ago)

I can't listen to it yet, so i'm stuck revisiting The Loneliest Time.
And i'm realizing i was wrong about "Beach House". It's glorious.

enochroot, Friday, 21 July 2023 17:42 (one year ago)

i'm not entirely convinced by the song of "put it to rest" but the textures are absolutely gorgeous

ufo, Friday, 21 July 2023 21:37 (one year ago)

Enjoying the variety and new avenues on this.

Psychedelic Switch is almost a Perfume track but with the dial tuned a bit more back towards Daft Punk.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 22 July 2023 07:36 (one year ago)

This whole album is fantastic, but woah at Put It To Rest. Unbelievable song. Kind of goes a bit Heaven by Emeli Sande towards the end.

alpine static, Friday, 28 July 2023 15:22 (one year ago)

I think I've made peace with the fact that the only time CRJ and I were really vibing on the same plane was in 2015. Ah well.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 29 July 2023 02:50 (one year ago)

After Last Night, Kollage, Psychedelic Switch and Put It To Rest are up there with my favourite things she's done. I was not expecting to love this album as much as I do.

kitchen person, Saturday, 29 July 2023 20:10 (one year ago)

^^ I'd add "So Right" to those picks. I wasn't crazy about "Shy Boy" so I'm also surprised how much I like this album - her first side-B that rivals the parent album imo

Vinnie, Monday, 31 July 2023 00:56 (one year ago)

It's the first one I've liked more than the parent album. It might be my favourite since Emotion.

kitchen person, Monday, 31 July 2023 01:13 (one year ago)

idk Dedicated Side B was pretty great. And Emotion Side B was "only" an EP. So it's not like this has happened so much.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 31 July 2023 09:45 (one year ago)

i think it's easily better and more interesting than dedicated side b, but i prefer the loneliest time as an album to this which is much more eclectic for better & worse

ufo, Monday, 31 July 2023 09:48 (one year ago)

It took me a long time to come around to Dedicated and Dedicated Side B. Now I really love them in addition to (and as a continuation of) Emotion. Maybe that will happen to me again with Loneliest/Loveliest, but so far I haven't warmed up to either of them.

peace, man, Monday, 31 July 2023 13:31 (one year ago)

Oops got the names mixed up. "Shadow" was the one I'd call a highlight, not "So Right". "So Right" has a nice pre-chorus though

Vinnie, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 12:16 (one year ago)

no I'm relistening now and "So Right" is a highlight too. Goddamn it everything is a highlight

i hesitate to call it one of her best songs about having a crush (so i guess just one of her best songs) but "the architecture of this connection is your reflection / it's always following me" is an amazing pop chorus lyric

Same about « After Last Night ». I hadn’t noticed it was a Rostam co-written/produced track. It doesn’t have his usual style.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 14:22 (one year ago)
