Funny, didn't much like "Scorpio" when it came out.. Heard it last year on a compilation I bought, and realised it was great!

Nearly voted "Buffalo Gals" but.

Mark G, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 12:02 (two years ago)

Seriously. Some great stuff here, especially from Bambaataa, but it's tough to beat the most obvious choice.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 12:04 (two years ago)

won't argue much with the ranking here, The Message is perfect, also won't argue with anyone who prefers Planet Rock

"Making Cash Money" tons of fun, love the title and concept of "Looking for the Perfect Beat", "Change the Beat" is plain great (Bill Laswell on bass), "Buffalo Gals" probably the first (only?) British entry in the series and a classic, interesting to see attempts at country-crossover (?) with "Country Rock & Rap" and (thematically) "Space Cowboy".

Whodini weirdly low, "Magic's Wand" is incredible. Would like to read the original write-up.

Nice to see "Daydreamin'" included, even if it's hardly a rap tune.

"Sexual Rapping" is one of those songs where just from the title you know it's going to be packed with memorable banalities

corrs unplugged, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 12:07 (two years ago)

shame so many classic jams had to go up against "the message"

"Space Cowboy" is such a cool track, I think I might vote for that just because

I'm on team "Planet Rock," my favorite single of 1982 regardless of genre

Josefa, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 13:52 (two years ago)

Dammit, I really wish I had the time to listen to all these tracks. Like, WTF are “Flash to the Beat” and “Message II (Survival)”? Wayne and Charlie the Rapping Dummy? “Sexual Rapping”?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 14:21 (two years ago)

looking for the perfect beat!

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 9 August 2022 14:24 (two years ago)

The Message v Planet Rock is like the two sides of a personality. Two perfect songs whose cultural impact is possibly unmatched.

Think I have to vote Planet Rock.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 18:23 (two years ago)

lol "Sexual Rapping" is an interpolation of "Sexual Healing"

F'kin Magnetometers, how do they work? (President Keyes), Tuesday, 9 August 2022 18:30 (two years ago)

as good as Planet Rock is I think Looking for the Perfect Beat is almost better, blows my mind that was 1982. it sounds so advanced.

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 18:44 (two years ago)

Another vote for Planet Rock over here

meisenfek, Wednesday, 10 August 2022 15:20 (two years ago)

How widely known is it at this point that Bambaata is an accused child molester.

Chris L, Wednesday, 10 August 2022 16:01 (two years ago)

not as widely known as the synth line from "Planet Rock", but no secret either - it's in the top of his wiki entry

corrs unplugged, Friday, 12 August 2022 06:50 (two years ago)
