TRL End of Summer Countdown 2002

by this year i had mostly tuned out of this show, annoyed by how many videos they'd only show ~5 seconds of before moving onto some random other non-video segment. i know for sure that mtv was still airing blocks of videos during daytime or at least evening hours with semi-decent regularity in mid-to-late 2001 (one evening i recorded ginuwine's "differences" video onto a vhs tape, of all things), but idk if that was still true this year -- regardless i imagine they had been cutting back on such blocks for a while by then. as was the case for every single year after 1999, this end-of-summer special featured 10 fewer videos than the previous summer's had, at just 20.

there are a lot of songs i do not recall from here! like, i am almost 100% sure i never heard the enrique song at #7 even once. that one charted below the hot 100 in america, but then again the britney single fared similarly, but i was vaguely aware of it (probably b/c of the austin powers movie).

the source i'm using sez that both parts of "i need a girl" were combined into one position + that for the special they aired a live performance clip of diddy from a different mtv special (presumably both parts), so i have listed them together here, altho they are obv rather different. the one that was a hit specifically during that summer was part 2, but i'm sure part 1 was still fresh on people's memories too.

i didn't actually watch this special save for the last few minutes to see what would be #1. i remember seeing the top 3 and thinking, yeah, sounds about right. i am not sure if they never aired this special again in 2003 or later, but i can't find a record of such online and i certainly wouldn't have tuned in anymore by that point.

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 August 2022 16:18 (three years ago)

i don't think i had ever heard that before either + it's truly awful/embarrassing

dyl, Thursday, 11 August 2022 16:36 (three years ago)

I don’t think I’ve hard half of the songs in here but I doubt they have aged as gracefully as “love at first sight”.

i think the arrival of new found glory and good charlotte is what signaled to me that it was time for me to stop watching trl at all (no offense to anyone who's fond of them)

dyl, Thursday, 11 August 2022 16:58 (three years ago)

I had never even heard of New Found Glory until today - just checked: no chart presence in NL whatsoever, ever

i don't remember ever hearing "love at first sight" on trl, i think i'd basically stopped watching once i reached middle school (i'd graduated to the vh1 top 20 by then, like a real grown up)

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Thursday, 11 August 2022 19:52 (three years ago)

i'd vote for "i need a girl pt. 2" but i've never liked part 1

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Thursday, 11 August 2022 19:53 (three years ago)

part 2 is definitely the better one

dyl, Thursday, 11 August 2022 21:31 (three years ago)

oh oops speaking of that i forgot to c/p ginuwine's name for the artist credits on pt 2 (but got tammy ruggieri who is audible for like two seconds and is so obscure in general that it is literally unclear what the correct spelling of her last name is). at least i mentioned him in the op!

dyl, Thursday, 11 August 2022 23:30 (three years ago)

i still have love for complicated, hot in here and full moon.

Spottie, Friday, 12 August 2022 23:42 (three years ago)

Vivid memories of many of these as legit summer songs. I guess "Love at First Sight" was 2001 in Europe but I didn't know it until the following summer. It was my #1 single of 2002 then, and it still is.

billstevejim, Saturday, 13 August 2022 17:34 (three years ago)

Eminem and it isn’t even close. His best song.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 15 August 2022 18:59 (three years ago)

got a soft spot for the Ashanti song, sublime flute sample and a fun kind of low energy

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

The worst one is Mario by a wide margin

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 00:46 (three years ago)

Hahaha afraid to listen to that one. Is it a remake of the Biz Markie song?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 00:48 (three years ago)

kinda sorta

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 00:55 (three years ago)

a bit of a weird list. a handful of stuff i don't remember. i have zero recollection of this B2K song, pretty good tho. the enrique song is kind've a dope 80s rock homage? one direction ended up mining this territory in much the same way. i love how housey the paulina rubio song is even if the vocals are... um... it could've been a kylie song!

"my friends over you" is actually a great song, i would say prob the only essential new found glory song.

"hot in herre" and "complicated" are fully in that zone of songs i appreciate, i have loved, but i have little to no desire to ever hear them or think about them again

i heard "without me" randomly recently and it actually sounded kinda amazing to me, but the hook has that real nagging annoying quality to it

"down 4 u" not one of the more memorable ja rule/ashanti songs...

the answer is so obviously "love at first sight," i mean it's one of the greatest pop singles in history let alone of the summer of 2002. but i'm going to vote for "i need a girl" for being perfectly emblematic of the rap/R&B collabs that ruled the early 00s, two songs i loved at the time and still feel very fondly towards. the part two beat is iconic, the videos are seared into my brain. love to "full moon" of course as well

didn’t know it either, but you’re right!

That Enrique Iglesias song has always been one of my favorite pop hits of the early 2000s, even though it was often forgotten compared to the previous singles on that album.

Also interesting to note that the Shakira, Kylie and Enrique singles are all third singles from late 2001 releases. (Well. third from a Canadian perspective where we did get In Your Eyes, while the US didn't, but didn't get "Te Dejo Madrid"). Almost surprised No Doubt's Underneath It All didn't sneak in there as well, which was released around that time and would have belonged in that category.
