"The Reason" vs "Bad Day"

This is hard. Anyway, here's a dumb story: the summer of 2006, I quit my job at the grocery store on an adolescent whim (I think the cashier I had a crush on had also quit, so I figured "it's not worth it anymore to stick around"). Now I needed a new job, and a manufacturing plant nearby was hiring. The barrier for entry was low, and they hired me basically on sight.

This place manufactured rubber tubing to insulate large electrical wiring. There were these big injection-mold ovens that were manned by various dudes. On my first day, I shadow one of these dudes. He shows me how to pull the tubing off the mold with a big hook, and shave the excess rubber off with a utility knife. Now, I am the sort of person who likes to learn by doing, so before long I asked to give it a try myself. Note that I'm wearing kevlar gloves and sleeves to protect from cuts and burns.

I pull the thing out of the oven. I start shaving the excess rubber. Somehow, my right hand slips and I plunge the knife-point into the palm of my left hand. Before I even know how to react, I'm bleeding profusely. Glove is soaked, blood is dripping on the factory floor. I am *cackling*, in part out of shock, and in part because I really think it's genuinely funny: of *course* this shit is going to happen to me on my first day.

Soon enough, I've got a temporary bandage on it, and they're driving me to a clinic nearby to get stitches. What is playing on the radio on the drive over? Fuckin' "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter. I got my stitches. I didn't come back to work.

I've always kind of liked the verse of DP's "Bad Day" chord progression and melody-wise but something about the jaunty tone of the chorus strikes me as really funny (unintentionally). Like, "hey buddy something terrible happened to you, nbd, get over it lol". zchrys, how did the song actually make you feel when you heard it in the car that day? I feel like I would have literally lol'd but I'm not the one with the deeply stabbed hand...

I really love the guitar hocketing(?) on the intro and verses of "The Reason", kind of reminds me of Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint." But beyond that it's some really dull MOR shit.

I guess I'd go for "Bad Day" because unlike "The Reason" it always makes me smile a bit when I hear it at the supermarket.

xps to J. Sam I was just sort of mildly amused/annoyed because I *hate* that song, but also the universe was being very on-the-nose.

I don't like The Reason either, but if I had to be forced to listen to just one of them, I'd choose that one
