Damn this album rules so hard: https://theyhatechange.bandcamp.com/
I'm not sure how to describe it tbh...a breathtakingly seamless blend of nu-indie rap, Miami bass, and jungle? It's one of the only things I can think of that remind me of Vaudeville Villain's production style (though they don't rap like DOOM tbc; the "nu-indie" is more in the lyrics than the delivery).
Pitchfork sez:
On their latest LP, Finally, New, they spit aggressive, East Coast-flavored braggadocio raps over UK breaks and drum’n’bass beats filtered through local styles like Tampa jook and Miami bass. Even amid a deluge of rap music made with sounds from the club, little else sounds like this.
Best to just listen though:

I have no context at all for this but it sounds pretty good to me
(mainstream/backpacker divide I grew up with seems pretty comprehensively scrambled at this point?)

gecs shoutout I'm sold
yes, I think that's true, though there are aspects to it that have maybe mutated into something new? tbh I don't follow rap enough to weigh in on it. I wasn't sure what to call this in terms of the rapping, and I confess I have no real idea what the hell "nu-indie" is supposed to mean lol, but wanted to gesture towards stuff like the gecs namedrop and the gender fluidity, stuff you might not expect if I called it street rap

and tbh I'm not sure there is much of a context for this! they seem pretty sui generis

yeah i thought about posting this in the doing it wrong rap thread but it feels like it’s own thing. no trace of Griselda-ism. also i wish I liked the album better bc the project orientation and vibe seem really fresh but the beats weren’t hitting on a few listens … will revisit

thanks for starting this thread, the album is pretty spectacular. definitely one of my favorites of the year.
idk if the rhyming is really nu-indie, or whatever we're calling the scene with earl sweatshirt, mike, etc, but it is certainly out of step with today's trends. i heard notes of big boi, camp lo's sonny cheeba, and ish butler's work with shabazz palaces (that latter group might be the purest antecedent for this sort of thing)

I only got around to checking this out after you mentioned it in the AOTY thread voodoo chili, so thanking u
Shabazz Palaces for sure, and yeah I get a mid-period Outkast feel from the rapping too. But oh man thank you so much for mentioning Sonny Cheeba—there was one specific rapper this kept reminding me of, to an almost intrusive extent, that I couldn't put my finger on and it's totally him

appreciate it, glad i'm not crazy haha

my two favs are probably "some days i hate my voice," and "from the floor," which come from opposite ends of the ass-shaking spectrum

very much on the same wavelength as shabazz palaces but breakbeats are a great addition to that sound

sonny cheeba is def an influence it seems, i think they quote a camp lo lyric at one point!
