I'll give it a go now. Liked his early work, especially The Animal Years but kind of lost track of him around 2010. Saw him a few times and was always amazed by his charisma and seemingly genuine passion for performing. Liked some of his ex's stuff, too, and think I saw her perform with Hem at some point.

I feel like I am the only person ever who has connected with that album but for whatever reason I’m still moved by it whenever I put it on. Treat it like a concept album about someone trying the best to recover from a painful divorce, not just a collection of songs. It’s journey! A lot of the songs are like little lies he’s telling himself, and it’s not until near the end of the album that he seems to have genuinely reached the truth of what he’s been saying all along.

Cheers to the Andy Stott voters, I’m listening to and digging that now.

The Andy Stott took several years to charm me. I was consciously avoiding it because it felt to me, at the time, as the token electronic album every non-electronic zine/blog/forum was recommending and I tend to approach those sort of recommendations with extreme caution because it’s sort of like asking a bartender what shampoo they’d recommend. They might actually recommend you a great shampoo, but that’s not really their area of expertise or why you are there in the first place.

Anyways, ons night when I was in a dark mood I gave it another chance and left it as background music while reading and it hit me how brilliant it is. Don’t really smoke weed very often and I haven’t tried it myself, but I bet it’s a great album to smoke weed to. So many subtle changes and textures going on in every song.

The Faith in Strangers EP is a good companion piece too.
