Is this strictly a UK thing? I don't recall seeing these in the US.

These are all UK yeah which is why I broadened the remit to any reissue anywhere related to TV/film

Gerald beat me to my comment. I have never seen this ad tie-in phenomenon.

From the mid-80s to the late 00s/early 10s it was very popular here to release (or re-release) songs from popular adverts and almost as popular for them to become hits in their own right. There's maybe around 20 which got to number one as well.
