Neither of these. Jeff Lynne reduces Stan Lynch's drumming down to a narcoleptic heroin beat for Petty and Howie Epstein's addictions. The Floyd song takes four people to write what sounds like a b-side for Peter Gabriel .

The best and only answer:

(at least for learning, expecting, or anticipating to fly songs)

Guy Pratt, who played in the Waters-free Floyd, teased this song in his book, expressing his disdain for songs by rich people singing about their hobbies. But if you can handle his always-on personality, I enjoy his bass demos:

Anyway, "Momentary Lapse" was the first CD I ever owned (it was a gift). "Into the Great Wide Open" ... it has its moments, but it's kind of Tom Petty's "New Jersey."

But "Expecting to Fly" rules. I guess I don't even mind Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly."

"Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz really sucks. "Fly Like an Eagle" rules. "Jet Airliner" kind of sucks. "Jet" is pretty stupid. "Given to Fly" is pretty OK. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is good. "

sneaking fondness for the Floyd - was a semi-hit right? appreciate it as part of their elaborate project to massively troll Roger Waters. deeply in love with the 1987 floyd press shot aesthetic of sensible shirts and pleated front pants, like they are successful stockbrokers about to meet Douglas Adams at an upmarket wine bar (that one of them happens to own). musically i an always quite pleased to hear it out in the wild and i like the weird “hook” that sounds like an elephant moaning. so, Floyd.

Gawd, "flying" must be the most abused metaphor next to rivers, and fire.

Live, Gilmour doesn't bother with the solo -leaving it to Tim Renwick who himself gets bored with it and throws part of the solo from "Young Lust"

I love Floyd's. Has a certain late summer sunset melancholy feel I can't quite nail down but which it shares to some extent with the 88 remix of Chris Rea's On the Beach.

I just want to fly. Put your arms around me, baby.
I just want to fly.

Maybe I don't really wanna know
How your garden grows
'Cause I just want to fly.
Want to live, I don't want to die. But I ain't got wings.

Fly me to the moon and let me
Twenty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul

Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I

One could assemble a supercut of all these songs together and

lol at that live Floyd clip - i sometimes regret not seeing that 1994 tour, I passed on a few opportunities - but if i had been there I would’ve probably had an aneurysm from the antics of that percussionist alone

Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun

Much better songs on that Petty album.

Really really love the production on the PF song, how the drums/guitars/keys crash and reflect off each other, it’s weirdly post apocalyptic mad max-y to me

The Tom Petty song is not very good

especially when he had this one on the album:

Of all the songs Dylan could've chosen to pay tribute to Petty after his passing, he picked this one!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g83nxZdLao

But yes, "Two Gunslingers" is the better song. MUCH better.

birdistheword, Saturday, 31 December 2022 03:14 (two years ago)

Interesting. I always thought the Petty tune was one of those uncontroversial songs that everyone likes. It’s not exactly a dynamic melody but I’ve always found it very soothing. I suppose it’s quite anodyne but sometimes you need that.

I think what I mean is its BALEARIC BEAT

Then again isn't that what the first few minutes Keep Talkin' was aiming for? So I've been led to believe anyway.

I don't have any problem with it; I just never play it.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 December 2022 12:49 (two years ago)

On the scale of “pretty Tom petty songs that don’t really go anywhere”, it’s no “wildflowers”

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 31 December 2022 16:12 (two years ago)

The version from Petty's Live Anthology is really great.

I have never cared for much of Floyd's post-Waters material.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 31 December 2022 16:16 (two years ago)

"Into the Great Wide Open" ... it has its moments, but it's kind of Tom Petty's "New Jersey."

Not at all. It was followed by his most popular song in over a decade and an against-the-odds mid 90s comeback album.
