Greatest Hits is a compilation album by the American rock band Journey, originally released in 1988 by Columbia Records. It is the band's best-selling career disc, spending 731 weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart (more than any other compilation album, except for Bob Marley and the Wailers' Legend, in history). Additionally, as of 27 September 2022, it has logged 1,371 weeks on Billboard's Catalog Albums chart.

On 22 April 2008, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified Greatest Hits 15× Platinum for sales of 15 million copies in the United States. As of December 2008, it was reported to have been the sixth highest certified 'greatest hits' package in the United States according to the RIAA, behind only similar collections by the Eagles, Billy Joel, Elton John, and the Beatles' red and blue compilations.

I was just going to do E5C4P3 but I think this comp will be a better listen and had no idea it sold that much.

I have been quietly going through ILM’s databanks for bigger artist that have yet to be polled from the 60s and 70s. I have recently done stuff likeTthe Moody Blues and The Doobie Brothers but this time I wanted one of the most obnoxious bands of all-time and think I have found it. Anyways, this should be fun or horrible.

can't think of a more egregious greatest hits omission than the lack of 'stone in love' here

Only the Young is an absolutely incredible tune. I love a lot of these, esp "Any Way You Want It," but "Only the Young" is the best song they ever wrote.

The "Separate Ways" video gives it the slight edge over "Lights". Epitomizes 80s videos for me

I know it sits out of time, maybe their least discussed glory-years album, but Raised on Radio has jams, including "I'll Be Alright Without You."

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 September 2022 14:29 (one year ago) link

Wow, this is tough. I know all these songs and am realizing that I don't like any of them.

Seriously, I look at that list and nothing jumps out as something I ever need to hear again. In a vague sense I am okay with the fact that Journey existed. They helped define an era and aesthetic. But I would probably rather listen to the greatest hits of Foreigner, Styx, or REO Speedwagon than hear another Journey song, ever.

I remember someone did a poll of this years ago on Facebook asking which song would you pick as your favorite, and my answer was all of them. For this one I voted for "Wheel In The Sky" which was the first Perry-era Journey song I heard. And, yes, "Stone In Love", "Still They Ride" should be here (both are on the 2cd Essential). Also look for "Feeling That Way/Anytime", where Greg Rolie shares lead vocals with Perry.

tootall (jetfan), Thursday, 29 September 2022 15:22 (one year ago) link

Things I like about Journey:

- "Feelin' That Way/Anytime." This was one time -- possibly the only time -- those Roy Thomas Baker stacked vocals actually worked. Super fun late-'70s AM radio highway jam.

- "Stone In Love." The session hackery, largely supplied by non-entity Steve Smith, began to dominate their approach. Whatever sense of swing they'd had -- and there wasn't much -- was gone forever, but Smith rose to the occasion on "Stone In Love," a perfect power-pop hook that fellow hacks Toto were probably jealous of.

though i definitely ride for Stone In Love, i do genuinely love a lot of these singles

wheel in sky is cool because of those big crescendos

and i love Lights, it feels a tiny bit like Sam Cooke, the way Perry sings this part “it’s SAAAAAAD … Out on the road withOUT youu… without your CHAAA-AAAA-AARMS

I also agree that "Stone In Love" is a glaring omission. Apparently, there is a Vol. 2 and it's the opening song but came out 23 years later. Also, I don't really recognize any of the other songs outside the Escape ones on that comp.

Greatest Hits 2 is the band's second greatest hits package. It was released 23 years after the first greatest hits package in 1988. The album includes the remaining radio hits that were left off the first greatest hits package and fan favorites. This includes "Stone in Love", "Feeling That Way", "Anytime", "Just the Same Way", "Still They Ride", "Suzanne", "Walks Like a Lady", "The Party's Over" and "After the Fall".

Don't Stop Believin' really a victim of its own success here. It was quite possibly my favorite when I owned this cassette, but it got memeified even before that Sopranos thing happened. Gotta go with Lights.

If we were polling their true legacy, album art, my vote would go to Captured.

enochroot, Monday, 3 October 2022 02:50 (one year ago) link

Glad I did this poll, it was fun. When Journey comes on the radio I'm about 50/50 to listening or turning the channel. Like others have also said I have just heard them too much in this lifetime. But liked listening to this comp to try and figure out my favorite song.

When I first opened this poll I thought my vote was going to be for "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" but decided that I really don't like how it ends with all the na na na stuff. Ended up voting for "Lights" as that song is still undeniable.

Bee OK, Monday, 3 October 2022 18:47 (one year ago) link

I find Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' fairly intolerable up until the extended outro! Only The Young edged out Separate Ways for my vote, but that's only because Lovin' You Is Easy wasn't a single.

"Any Way You Want It" has such a great chrome gleam to it. The way those massed vocals at the beginning give way to Schon's huge riff feels very Dawn of the '80s.

My sole vote for Faithfully rings mournfully through the night like the lonely Schon guitar riff

so, "Any Way You Want It" does bring back ONE fun memory, even if I'm kinda 'meh' on the song.

back when I was a Fundie (aka high school), my brother and I went on a few church retreats to Alabama. the most boring fucking thing imaginable, all Bible all the time, other than the few moments we got to spend water skiing and riding the SeaDoo, which was admittedly fun, but it was very brief. no tv, all the recreational activities had Bible lessons tied in (even somehow when we played VOLLEYBALL), and the only music we were allowed to play was Christian music, though I snuck Kansas in because it was close enough.

but there was always a talent show and my brother and I used to dominate it because nobody at this church had any talent - the singers in the Praise Band's harmonies sounded a bit like two trains derailing simultaneously. we always brought our dad's acoustic guitar, and the first year I went, I won the talent show, playing a cover of some lame tune by a Christian band called Nouveaux, who went from Def Leppard ripoffs to lame acoustic rock in a one album span. learned it in five minutes, fucked half of the chord changes up, but w/e.

the next year, my brother wanted to join me, and we decided to play that shit song "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls (I didn't do the actual tuning, I just fudged with the chords). so anyway, we finish, and they're all cheering, and jokingly shouting "encore", and then the minister's wife is like "you wanna do another song?".

well...my brother and I, without missing a beat, launch into "Any Way You Want It" by Journey, and we traded off verses. the kids were liking it, but the face of the Minister's wife grew more and more sour, and that's when, for the first time, I started paying attention to the lyrics I was singing and realizing quite quickly why maybe this wasn't the best choice for the setting. she let us finish and didn't do much more than scowl, but she definitely tried to vet what we were going to play the next time we did any performing.

so anyway, we won, and shortly after, I began worshipping Satan.

stank viola (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 03:37 (one year ago) link

That's the way you need it!

Great story.

That is an awesome story, glad you shared it.

I had the same type of Christian upbringing, so I can relate.
