It's "Precious Box." Or "Shoot the Dog." Or "Round Here." Or "Amazing."

This album is so good.

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:11 (three years ago)

It became one of the fastest-selling albums in the UK, selling over 275,000 copies in the first week.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:13 (three years ago)

around last month this became my favorite gm album. the production on all of his records is devastatingly gorgeous but the filter house influence on this one just makes it extra beautiful and eerie

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:14 (three years ago)

I like how on the verse to "Amazing" I can tell he's been listening to Daft Punk.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:15 (three years ago)

and "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)"

Great album, misunderstood critically at the time.

'Flawless' was a summer jam at the time for little me, but more so the Shapeshifters Remix.

we're like victims
of the same disease
look at your big bad daddy
and your mom
... and your mom
was always acting craaaaazy

^^^ always thought this was a great lyric but its greatness is indivisible from the audible relish he sings it with

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:22 (three years ago)

belongs to the same genre of lyric/delivery alchemy as the "fucked-up piece of ass" part of "flawless" that just had to be the thread title

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:26 (three years ago)

I forgot about the gap between Freeek/Shoot the Dog and the album

I wonder, if he'd dropped "Amazing" or "Flawless" as the first singles, if that would've made any difference to the (it semmed at the time) underwhelming rception. They seem like the album's big crowdpleasers.

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:31 (three years ago)

When you mean underwhelming reception, is it critical? The British public embraced it without hesitation.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 October 2022 15:33 (three years ago)

xp As you say he effectively did release Amazing as the lead single. Freeek/Shoot the Dog were not only ages ago by then but he was on a different label

A lot of the reviews at the time put it in the hall for being overlong and having overlong songs. There'll be a chance for them to get it right if there's ever a Patience box set.

always thought this was a great lyric but its greatness is indivisible from the audible relish he sings it with

"Cars and Trains" has some of his most gorgeous vocals..."So young and fucked up, baby / Always higher than a child should see"

"Round Here", too. Is this his most personal album?

Music fell like rain to the streets

I think it's "Precious Box" for me. It hints at a shimmering deep house opus that George could have made had he had the opportunity and inclination. Imagine a collaboration with Charles Webster.

But basically this whole album is amazing.

Yes, there's a strong echo throughout of Modjo's production style in particular.

Tim F, Monday, 10 October 2022 03:18 (three years ago)

I'd love to know specifically what French/funky house he was digging. Besides The Ones obv. There was so much of that here in the early 00s and idk if I hear Modjo more-so over others.

cars and trains sounds like it could have been produced by luomo

"Round Here" is round where I realize I've completely sunk into this album's world and never want to leave, so maybe that
