the Moises app let's you isolate drum tracks from any song... can we use its power for good?

not sure how much AI is actually involved with this https://moises.ai/ app but I must say it seems to be working incredibly well for a lightweight, freeware app

also not sure what the ilx stand on copyright issues is

but all the same, here's isolated tracks for Boko Wa Chotto by Haroumi Hosono (because that was an mp3 that was on my phone):
https://ufile.io/f/by93g

how crazy is that?

corrs unplugged, Monday, 10 October 2022 19:05 (two years ago)

I think this is cool af but I'm afraid this is going to lead to ILXors posting freestyles they made over "Funky Drummer"

stank viola (Neanderthal), Monday, 10 October 2022 19:10 (two years ago)

Well, that's already isolated. This comes at an incredibly poor time since I've spent the last few weeks recording drum breaks to sell as a sample pack, a practice which is now clearly obsolete.

But yeah this will be crazy for making bootlegs/edits of tracks.

I'm only one example but i'd still rather buy a drum break sample pack from a drummer than use this parlor trick if I wanted drum beats for something.

stank viola (Neanderthal), Monday, 10 October 2022 19:19 (two years ago)

yeah that sounds like a cool sample pack!

I'd be more interested in trying to find some cool Charlie Watts parts and isolate or maybe see if it can isolate a Charlie Parker solo completely, stuff like that

it is also tempting to go back to making mashups...

corrs unplugged, Monday, 10 October 2022 19:22 (two years ago)

since it does vocals, drums, bass and "other"(melody) it would also be fun to use it on Bernard Edwards or another iconic bass player, kinda like having access to a primitive version of the mixer board on the Classic Albums series

corrs unplugged, Monday, 10 October 2022 19:25 (two years ago)

True, for instructional purposes (especially with the ability to slow things down) this could be incredible.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 10 October 2022 19:39 (two years ago)

yeah, that's definitely how they're selling it, as "The Musician's App" endorsed by Eloy Casagrande from Sepultura etc, and yeah I totally see it working

corrs unplugged, Monday, 10 October 2022 20:10 (two years ago)

I have often enjoyed isolated tracks. The "Fool in the Rain" isolated drum track is frkn legendary ahem

You know that part of Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain" where they come out of the silly Latin section back into the main piano riff and there's like a steadily rising drum roll and

The isolated bass tracks for "Rio" and "In a Big Country" also rule my world.

Personally I would prefer that these gems arise more organically/serendipitously or come from artists and/or producers who have chosen to share stems. Not from software that can shlurp anything from anything.

Yeah I know philosophically it's not far off from arguments that could have been made against railroads, photo retouching, cassette recorders, Photoshop, whatev.

So, I guess, welcome to I Love Deepfakes.

I know what you mean, it's an overwhelming idea. But "organically/serendpitiously" = either the track has been used for a Rock Band video game, or someone with access to the multi-track master tapes has chosen to leak them.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 10 October 2022 20:27 (two years ago)

yeah same totally get where you're coming from

and at the same time, not sure I can resist the powers of this palantir

had not heard the isolated bass track from "In a Big Country", that is stellar!

corrs unplugged, Monday, 10 October 2022 20:30 (two years ago)

corrs: It really is. Some amazing shit gets lost in that busy mix.

the floor is guava (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 10 October 2022 20:35 (two years ago)

I want something like this but that can separate vocal harmonies into tracks, but i think due to the way vocals are processed on recordings it's almost impossible nowadays. those stems apps don't work.

sometimes a dude just wants to learn all the parts and everything's so double-tracked that it's hard to hear individual parts.

stank viola (Neanderthal), Monday, 10 October 2022 20:38 (two years ago)

Neanderthal: historical recordings can sometimes be isolated via stereo panning - vocals were usually dead center, but ALL the vocals were there. So you really would need the master tapes (or an episode of Classic Albums) to isolate individual parts.

OR! Hear me out.

What if we knew of someone with a seriously good ear and a degree in music. Someone like, say, Kirk Hamilton. In his "Strong Songs" podcast he often completely recreates a song (playing every instrument, the fkin bastard), including every part of the harmonies.

Bastard. I envy him to the point of hatred, but here you go: https://strongsongspodcast.com/

oh that's awesome. I used to rely on Youtube videos of someone doing similar with the harmonies. thanks for the share!

The isolated bass tracks for "Rio" and "In a Big Country" also rule my world.

Just in case you haven't seen this:

I had not! Damn. Thanks.

Seriously I started admiring his playing in 1981 (I was in middle school, shut up) and haven't stopped yet.

Recently I was on a walk and casually looked at the Little Free Library next to the bike trail near my house and saw his memoir. Fun.

one month passes...

So, I put the three extant recordings of Ian Curtis singing Ceremony through Moises to isolate the vocals and find out once and for all what they were meant to be before Bernard Sumner had to figure them out. And … I still can't make them out

Alba, Thursday, 8 December 2022 11:40 (two years ago)

interesting
how's it sound?

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 8 December 2022 12:03 (two years ago)

I'll see if I can upload them somewhere later on so you can hear. On the lowest-fi one (bootlegged soundcheck) the vocals channel almost totally misses the frequency at which the vocals appear (they end up in 'other'). On the other two, the vocals are quite well isolated, though on the rehearsal take in particular there are big digital artefacts.

I was dancing to Dancing Queen last night, and while I've always thought of it primarily as a miracle of melody and harmony, I suddenly realized - whoever's drumming is doing an amazing job! Had to try and isolate it, what a pocket.

Kirk Hamilton breaks down the song musically in his Strong Songs podcast. he talks about the drum part from around minute 8.

the shaker intro bit the shaker outro in the tail, hard (breastcrawl), Sunday, 18 December 2022 12:51 (two years ago)

It is great sloshy open-hat work, no doubt.

I also like Kirk Hamilton when he's talking about something I like (not so much when he isn't).

Cirque de Soleil Moon Frye (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 18 December 2022 14:26 (two years ago)

yeah, thanks that was a very enjoyable analysis

corrs unplugged, Sunday, 18 December 2022 18:10 (two years ago)

I did the trial thing, and after five songs, immediately subscribed. Only trouble is now it doesn't seem to be downloading the tracks I want, which is weird because the Curtis Mayfield tracks I isolated and downloaded during the trial worked fine and went right to my downloads folder. Now it just says "finished" and there's nothing in the folder. Odd.

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 18 December 2022 23:33 (two years ago)

I fixed it. This app is amazing. I'm going to be up all night. Anyone know how it works? Assuming just using AI to eq and isolate the correct frequencies?

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 18 December 2022 23:57 (two years ago)

Yeah it's insane. Magic I supppose...

They call it AI but maybe as a shorthand for machine learning, I believe something similar was used in the new Beatles remasters
I have had it up to here waiting for the Beatles catalogue to be remastered
