Is Rancid O.K,?

Allright, there are a lot of things I don't like about Rancid, like the fact that they spend hours getting their hair to stick up just right, and that Lars wore 3 different punkrock outfits when they were on SNL, and they're basically the opitomy of fashion-punk, but I'm drunk and listening to the self-titled album, and it's pretty good. Should I excuse all the posing and primping becase of this?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought they were a pretty good band. But I like the Clash alot also. (hey Nate!)

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Operation Ivy is to Rancid as the Clash is to Big Audio Dynamite. Rancid has some decent tunes, but all the fire and glory was in Op Ivy.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh, I've seen about a million Op Ivy stickers plastered everywhere but never actually heard an Op Ivy song.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I just now listened to rancid's 2000 self-titled album while reading the lyrics online, and you know what, the lyrics are actually pretty good politipunk lyrics. Before I pass out or sober up, I have to gel my hair up all spikey and go get in a fistfight or two (which is ok, since I'm 6'4" and 270 lbs), so I'll post to you guys later. Have a great night, I know I will.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Helltime is my exboyfriend, and I claim my $300 for guessing this.

Rancid is ok, I never understood all the hatred for them. They aren't like something I'd actively buy but they also aren't something I'd actively hate, either.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Helltime is Jake Plummer ?!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

No no no. Jesus, I'm not Otis Wheeler and I'm not Jake Plummer. I'm Dan Pavlik, for christ sake. Do I really have so many dopplegangers?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

You only WISH you were Jake Plummer.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's Jake Plummer?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Rancid do what they do reasonably well, it's just that what they do isn't especially original. That said, the bands they're cribbing from (Clash, Specials, etc.) aren't doing it themselves anymore, so who is to blame them? Responsible for some fine singles, though, notably "Time Bomb" and "Hyaena".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Jake Plummer couldn't hit a barn door.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

they had tons of catchy tunes. i always liked them.

I'm the guy wearing the hat and the Factor 8 shirt.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

rancid is good. what about tim's wife's band the distillers? they are annoying.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Your head is ROUNDER???? That picture don't work for me you know.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

well, it seems that's not working. Look up chaleetoe (my lil bro's site) on google and there you'll eventually find pics of me (the ones w/ "dan" in'em.)

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The distillers are kind funny because they sound like the singer took voice lessons/try to imitate lessons from Tim Armstrong, but she's a girl so it's funny. Like when that Kittie chick does the deathmetal voice, that's pretty funny too.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 08:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At the chaleetoe site, on the "old image map" link, I'm the guy sitting down with "pictures" across his chest (looking fat and goofy).

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 08:05 (twenty-three years ago)

There are voice lessons that make you sound like the guy from Rancid??

original bgm, Saturday, 30 November 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The distillers are kind funny because they sound like the singer took voice lessons/try to imitate lessons from Tim Armstrong, but she's a girl so it's funny.

I thought she sounded a little too much like Courtney Love in that video (that's the only thing I've heard). Although I sorta like the idea of husband and wife spending long hours together in voice lessons.

Vic Funk, Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, Rancid. I'll spare you the rant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 November 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Rancid is FUN! I like them, which no doubt=I am not punk, and that is fine. Every song on Out Come the Wolves is catchy as hell, and in a rock n' roll sense instead of the normal whiny pop-punk sense.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 December 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Rant Ned Rant!

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 December 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

btw you should like what you like and not worry about if a paticular band you enjoy is "ok" with ilm. this thread title leaves a bad taste in my mouf.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 1 December 2002 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

especially because most of the music journos with big mouths have shit taste anyway.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 1 December 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

they had to develop big mouths to defend their shit taste = evolution at work

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 1 December 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Rant Ned Rant!

Nah, I'm having a relaxed morning (and this new Add N to (X) is pretty darn good, so I'd rather think about that).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Rancid fuckin' rocks. Distillers fuckin' rock, possibly even more. At the very least because Sing Sing Death House is a nice, concise 12 songs as opposed to Rancid always busting out 18 or so. If you don't like their hair or whatever, just don't look at them. CDs make this surprisingly easy, folks.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

mp3s make it even easier. Then you can imagine every song ever was done by robots.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Kinda like my kraftwerk albums! Good idea.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I like'em too.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 2 December 2002 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
whaddya guys think of Rancid now that their new video (damn, for them that song is MELLOW) has Lars playing dominoes with Kelly Osbourne and Benji from Good Charlotte?

I'm ok with this, personally.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Seems kinda desperate to rope in Kelly Osbourne. Benji strikes me as a longtime Rancid fan (and they've probably met on several occaisions, I'm guessing, if not toured together). Kelly Osbourne, however, just seems like starfucker video-candy. And boy doesn't Lars look old.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its a little message for all the millions of people who will cry 'sellout.'

which I think isnt too off the mark.. didn't they say that they'd never never ever never sign to a major?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly Osbourne, however, just seems like starfucker video-candy

and i tell you what, it works a treat!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was strange that they had a cover story in one magazine about how they'd never sign to a major, and then I saw it mentioned somewhere else the same month that they had.

I thought the first few albums and about half of "Life Won't Wait" were pretty good. The 2000 self-titled album didn't do much for me, though, and I haven't heard any of the new stuff. "1998," "Leicester Square," "Lady Liberty," "Nihilism," "Hyena" were all catchy and fun, but not so much in the bland/overproduced vein of most pop-punk.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, that video's awful. What's with the drummer being replaced by the dude from Blink 182?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

One day, the drummer for Blink-182 will drum for all bands. It's already started.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The dangers of human cloning.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I love Rancid. I need to see this video. I thought it was kinda funny on the Transplants album how Tim was talking about haters and his bankroll and stuff like that; seems to me that if anyone has the right to complain about haters, it's Tim Armstrong. And the prospect of a mellow Rancid single sounds great to me; I was kinda disappointed by all the splenetic ranting on the last album.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Rancid as well. I also liked their drummer...I mean the guy from Blink-182 has hot chops I guess, but Rancid's drummer had the tasty licks. I also liked him because I remember reading that he sucked when he joined the band, he was just a buddy, and he eventually stepped it up.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Armstrong is the bomb-diggity songwriter; he's one of the only overtly 'political' lyricists whose material I can totally dig on. I like Rancid quite a bit, but mostly cuz I really miss Op Ivy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

he's one of the only overtly 'political' lyricists whose material I can totally dig on

With all due respect to the mush-mouthed mohican, I don't think Mr.Armstrong's really qualified to throw his hat into any political discussion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, did you know about Op Ivy when they existed? If you did, respect. But I've heard so many people say that, and mmost of them were around 9 years old during Op Ivy's one national tour. The idea of "missing" Op Ivy seems a bit absurd to me. And plus Rancid is way better.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how they write songs about everything and keep them short and catchy. The best thing about Rancid is they seem to care about things, even if you can't really tell what or why they care about them. Actually I haven't heard THAT much Rancid, but I always enjoy scanning their song titles.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I was like 12 or 13 when I first heard Op Ivy, so maybe "missing" them isn't the right phrase so much as "their music reminds me of a formative time in my music appreciation", whereas Rancid (who I first heard at about 16 years old), more than anything else, reminds me of things Op Ivy turned me on to.

Of course Op Ivy initially kinda reminded me of Fishbone who initially reminded me of The Specials who reminded me of The Skatalites who...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The song itself isn't bad, if kinda generic. It was still nice to see them bopping around and Tim doing that head-tilt smirk thing. The lyrics reaffirm AGAIN they're friends for life (this is not news), but the break-up with Brody kinda gives the song a darker undertone (one of the lyrics is about how "she" isn't gonna be there for you). Though I thought the last album was ok, I'm definitely glad they've gone pop again.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim and Brody broke up? When did this happen?

I saw the video and it's good. Songs about being friends for life never get old, especially when they're by Rancid.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I'm giving "Indestructable" a second chance a full year after buying it, and listening to it with fresh ears I'd have to say it's a great deal more than ok. In fact, I'd go as far to say it's one of the better rock albums to come out in the past few years that I've heard. Seems like at some point they've stopped caring about making a good "punk rock" album and just tried to make a good album period, and did.

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll come out of the closet - I hav3 4 of their albums. At first it was cos I wanted to hear something Clash-like, but they have their own charms...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

as cheesy as they are, they can write really good tunes.

latebloomer: damn cheapskate satanists (latebloomer), Saturday, 12 March 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like "Tropical London" on the new one, but not enough to make me want to keep the album (which I got as a promo freebie). I gave it to my nephew and made his day.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 12 March 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It just sounds real good cranked up full blast on a Friday afternoon, which is more than I can say for Interpol or whatever.

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only person on Earth who doesn't think they sound 'just like the Clash'? I hear very little similarity between them aside from being punk bands that branch[ed] out. The oi/US hardcore influences come out much more in the average song. But I guess Sham 69 and pre-racist Skrewdriver comparisons wouldn't work quite as well in a blurb review.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't sound anything like Sham 69.

Tim Armstrong's vocal delivery is very Strummeresque, I find.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really think they sound like them. Only in superficial ways, I suppose. The songwriting is quite a bit different.

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear more Sham 69 than Strummer in the two 'hardcore' albums.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

and they covered "The Kids Are United" for something

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

I've been ripping my collection to flac and am listening to Rancid for the first time in 8 years. Fun stuff. Just found out a new one is coming out:

Seminal punk band Rancid - Tim Armstrong (guitar/vocals), Lars Frederiksen (guitar/vocals), Matt Freeman (bass/vocals), and Branden Steineckert (drums) - have set June 2nd for the release of Let The Dominoes Fall (Hellcat/Epitaph), their first studio album in six years. The platinum-selling band recorded at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound Studio, with production by Epitaph Records founder/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Let The Dominoes fall features nineteen new songs, all written by Rancid. Special guest and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Booker T contributes Hammond B3 organ on one track, “Up To No Good.”

“The crew is back doing what we do best,” says Armstrong. “We approached every element of this record as a team, and the result is my favorite Rancid record to date.”

It’s also their most topical. From the unflinching observations of “This Place,” “Lulu” and “Locomotive,” all of which presage the current economic meltdown, to “The Bravest Kids” which rails against media’s kid-glove treatment of the Iraq war, and the mostly acoustic “Civilian Ways,” inspired by the soldier’s journey of Armstrong’s brother to Iraq and back home again, Let The Dominoes Fall feels timely, adamant and alive.

“Last One To Die,” the first single from the new album, will premiere on April 7 via a widget available now on Rancid’s myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/rancid). Fans can register to get a personal embed code and then spread the widget to other sites. Every time someone enters valid info into the widget a point will be allotted. The twenty-five people with the most points will receive a pair of free tickets to see Rancid on tour this summer with Rise Against. For a complete itinerary go to: http://www.rancidrancid.com/shows

Let The Dominoes Fall is Rancid's seventh albumand first studio release since 2003's Indestructible, which reached #15 on the Billboard Top 200. That album inspired The Los Angeles Times to hail Rancid as “one of the most popular and enduring of American punk bands,” while Rolling Stone called them “brutally exuberant.

i was working on a paper a while back, since abandoned, about the music of my youth, so i downloaded 'Roots Radicals' and realized that in 12 years, i hadn't forgotten a single lyric in that song. i think that means that these boys know how to write some good songs.
