What is “carrot skin”

Can somebody explain to me how “carrot skin” is a thing and not just the outer layer of a root vegetable please and thank you

I cook all the time, stopped peeling my carrots a couple years ago because I concluded that people are silly and wasteful and carrot “skin” doesn’t exist. Somebody please disabuse me of this notion.

(FWIW, I wouldn’t peel carrots if I chop them for, say, a stir-fry, but I would for a salad… mainly for aesthetic reasons.)
