so when are they going to hybridize?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 30 November 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe when fischerspooner write a song that dj sammy can really get his teeth into?

minna (minna), Saturday, 30 November 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Too soon.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 30 November 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Or, alternately, when the readerships of Heat and The Face fully crossover.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 30 November 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Never!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

why not?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know, you say why and then I'll have something to argue against!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i'm not sure, i just think this could work, some early harthouse or bonzai type sounds, i do think its inevitable that electroclash will eventually start filching more from trance though

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

vitalic is huge with both crowds as is silverspins 'oh superman'.

stirmonster, Saturday, 30 November 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth I think I'm very much with you on this, and don't think it would be too much of a stretch provided the arm of "electroclash" you meant was the one doing pretty straight-up Italo disco stuff. (I.e., I don't think this would really work for Fischerspooner and the like.) When I was writing about Legowelt a while ago I said some of his tracks had a trance sensibility, which was just this vague sense and probably a heavily approximated definition of what properly constitutes "trance," but still -- yeah, I could see it from someone like him.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 30 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Polarius: Jams in the Key of Smack on Bunker (this is a Legowelt record).

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 1 December 2002 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It's already happened in the form of Ural 13 Diktators.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 1 December 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

paul cox in trance awareness! the shock of it....

stirmonster, Sunday, 1 December 2002 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

push vs miss kittin?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You don't have to dance to get the trance, Keith.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 1 December 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Look for 'Rock' by Punx, that's getting there in terms of crossover. And John B's 'American Girls' for the drum 'n' bass version.

I don't think it can happen totally. With a lot of current electro you have a very song-based structure, it's a complete unit in it's own right. With a lot of trance (and I'm not saying all of it, so don't shoot me down) the music is made to be mixed, it's a more open ended DJ tool.

Anna (Anna), Sunday, 1 December 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i don't dance and i still don't get the trance, paul.

stirmonster, Sunday, 1 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of electro tracks have been played in the last two years in trance DJ sets: Ferry Corsten "Punk", System F "Dance Valley", Members Of Mayday "10 in 01", Jens Lissat "Energy Flow (Plastic Boy Remix)". The more new wave/pop based tracks with vocals obviously don't lend themselves too well for these kinds of sets but there's usually a more minimal non-vocal remix of some sorts for any electro track.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

trance & Electroclash... hmm I would have thought the aesthetics / or intent are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

trance being mindless anonymous and mostly pointless DJ dance shit
and well electroclash is art wank nouevo celebrity

dsico (dsico), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

they could unite to smite the smug middlebrow?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah... what about that song 'cocaine'? (tho i'm probably quite far off what you're all talking about with my definition of trance)

minna (minna), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

zombie nation

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 2 December 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

RBA - No Alternative (sawing full-on electro like Kernkraft 400, produced by DJ Astrid of all people). Many electro tracks work quite well in darker, harder trance sets.

minna, do you mean Vitalic "You Prefer Cocaine"?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
ok american girls is great, doesnt particularly fit the question, though one of the b sides does. hear it here

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 23 March 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Think it would be more interesting to note the Italodisco influence in Stephen Lenky Marsden's dancehall productions. Where the hell that came from I have no clue. One of the straight rhythm versions of Diwali sounds a little like Inner Strings by Black Strobe(!) and his Masterpiece riddim has this weird electro harpischord vibe going on...

Dave Stelfox, Sunday, 23 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hopefully not. Electroclash is great, and sort of a return to the good old days of New Romantics. It doesn't need trance to combine with it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The electro/techno/trance hybridization is in full effect now - I've been hearing tons of tracks with sawing electro basslines and 80s drum breaks in the last few months. Check out this small sample.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 24 March 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

How about Mouse on Mars' "Vulvaland" from 1994? Or Alter Ego's "Decoding the Hacker Myth" from 1996? Or Higher Intelligence Agency's "Colourform" (1993) and Black Dog's "Temple of Transparent Balls" (1993) and "Spanners" (1994) Air Liquide has been making this sort of stuff for years, check "Anybody Home" for a good example of a trance/techno hybrid. Syrinx 2600's "Docking 20's" is another fine and original record. I could go on and on, but the simple truth is that trance and electro have been hybridized for ages. Of course my definiton of "trance" may be a bit wider than yours; in my opinion the golden age of trance was 1991-1994, before the whole thing turned sour with goa and club trance. No wonder some trance veterans have turned to producing electro.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know, you say why and then I'll have something to argue against!

Ronan this was f'in brilliant

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoops, that should read "trance/electro hybrid", not "trance/techno hybrid" (though Air Liquide do throw techno in the mix as well).

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
these people are predicting our future

this whole thread is brilliant (kelly glock), Sunday, 11 February 2007 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

doesnt electroclash + prog trance = the bodzin/schumacher sound?

spaceball.gif (flezaffe), Sunday, 11 February 2007 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

This CD (from 2004) was actually pretty good:

nothing hotlinked from discogs works now, not ilx's fault.

you'll need to upload it (from hd or url) to imageshack.us or another site

fandango, Thursday, 22 February 2007 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

can't be arsed

just testing image tags aren't screwed -as well- nu-ilx and all that ;)

fandango, Thursday, 22 February 2007 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

Heard that horrible trance mix of 'Erotic Discourse' the other day. Didn't think it ws actually possible to make that song WORSE but apparently so...

J@cob, Friday, 23 February 2007 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

There's a trance mix of that?

Siegbran, Saturday, 24 February 2007 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Benny Benassi - "Love Is Gonna Save Us"

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 24 February 2007 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

dj hell basically ate out on this for years, didn't he? i never particularly liked his style, though.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 24 February 2007 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't it be impossible for those two to combine?

I mean, there are certain stylistic elements they do already have in common, such as analog synths. However, if it doesn't have a straight 4/4 dance beat with thumping bass drums and an overall 90s aeasthetic it isn't trance anymore. And at the same time, minimalism and a very 80s aesthetic is crucial to the Electroclash genre.

What more, electroclash has long since turned into electro.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 24 February 2007 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

TEH CORNUCOPIA FROM HELL

also, i think that mention of Bodzin here isn't necessarily warranted.

the table is the table, Saturday, 24 February 2007 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

Geir! WE HAVE ARRIVED, PEOPLE

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 25 February 2007 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Why dont anybody mention The Knife? perhaps its too obvious..

jonperson, Sunday, 25 February 2007 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

terence fixmer remix of brit girl group client's "zerox machine" seems to be this "hybrid"

Dominique, Sunday, 25 February 2007 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

i am thoroughly convinced that the Knife are not really 'peg'-able. they are a dancey pop group. any of the dance labels are too strict or fall away when listening to the breadth of their work.

the table is the table, Sunday, 25 February 2007 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I'm selling a copy of the Mixmag Electro Trance CD on eBay right now! Maybe I'll pull it out of the pile and give it a listen before it goes.

toby, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

Does 'electro' actually mean anything other than a catch-all term for bleepy electronic noises/dance music that isn't drum and bass these days? It seems to be bandied around so readily as to be effectively meaningless.

Matt DC, Sunday, 25 February 2007 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

In the same way that "trance" is bandied around readily as a catch-all term for all lower/middle-brow 4/4 dance music, yes.

Siegbran, Sunday, 25 February 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Big overdriven bass synth = electro

Faster than 130bpm = trance

J@cob, Monday, 26 February 2007 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

Teh dreaded sawtooth bass!
