What do you think of Ian Pooley

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 30 November 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

always associated him with bland gilles peterson-compost mafia

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 30 November 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean look at his name! BO_RING

He's German, of Welsh descent. Plus Ian Pooley is an official Mongoloid, you know. That's Junior Sanchez, Armand van Helden, Roger Sanchez, DJ Sneak, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk and Laidback Luke's secret society of funky house music producers. They've threatened to make a collective album ages ago, but nothing's ever come of it. My favourite Pooley track is, I think, Since Then (title track of album from 2000) but even better is the Jazzanova remix of What's Your Number (also 2000), which is something of a classic in nu-jazz (or whatever) circles. Ian Pooley likes to dabble in latin musical elements but he is very much a house music man, not so much an Peterson-Compost (which I don't consider bland at all - they may have an image problem, but that's another question) mafia member.

'Coracao Tambor' is a nice, big summer-y latin house track.

pooey

Since Then is probably the most Cafe del Mar-ish release that I listen to regularly bar The K&D Sessions. Which is a compliment, sort of - texturally exquisite latin-flavoured disco-house goes down a treat whether you're tuning in or tuning out. More thoughts on the album here.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

He has a nice remix of Hatiras Spaced Invader.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

and besides the excellent loungey parts, "Venasque" is an extra funky track. I'll be throwing that one on "summer" mix-cds til I'm 70.

I don't have a lot of exposure, but I like what I've heard. Someone gave me a copy of Meridian, which is decent but not groundbreaking.

webcrack (music=crack), Saturday, 30 November 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

search: 'Rollerskatin' Disco' and 'Whats Your Number'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 December 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

...and 'chord memory'. the original plus the daft punk mix.

Quality House Music.

Check Gimme Sound for a classic.

... or Piha by Ian Pooley & Majik J for some new shiat.

three years pass...
Revisiting some Pooley today: I always liked his more techno-based stuff, but it's fairly indistinguishable from the work of countless other producers. "Meridian" is way more downtempo than I remember -- I should have anticipated the post-"Meridian" snoozefests coming down the pipe at the time, but I didn't (full disclosure: I generally have a strong dislike for Latin house).

All in all, I'm not sure I have much use for Ian Pooley anymore.

Has anyone heard the remixes of "Cold Wait" (from "Meridian")? That's always been my fave Pooley track.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 February 2006 01:41 (twenty years ago)

He recently released a double cd - one a dj mix and one a collection of recent one off tracks and remixes. The dj mix was okay but the other disc was surprisingly bad, straight-down-the-line latin-flavoured tech-house that couldn't have more than about one and a half ideas per track - very NRK/Jamie Anderson, but quite lacklustre and pedestrian by those standards, with none of the textural delicacy or pop energy that I love about Since Then.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 20 February 2006 01:48 (twenty years ago)

i picked up a copy of since then for a buck at some store, having remembered it from a few years ago. i listened to it and quickly sold it to amoeba for a dollar. i was pretty bored by it.

gear (gear), Monday, 20 February 2006 01:49 (twenty years ago)

you can't front on his dj mixes (this one's not bad either!) ... i'll agree that his productions lack quality control. a few of his tracks are classic and pretty much the rest are worthless. if there's a poster-boy for bad ubiquitous uncreative overprolific tech-house it's ian pooley.

still ... search his remix of "herbie on rhodes" ... he should've stuck with the tough shit.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 20 February 2006 02:11 (twenty years ago)

"if there's a poster-boy for bad ubiquitous uncreative overprolific tech-house it's ian pooley."

Yeah OTM. Shame though 'cos I think he can be ace at times! Some of the shimmering trebly grooves on Since Then are just joyously compressed, the sparkly latin house equiv of Crydamoure.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 20 February 2006 02:50 (twenty years ago)

SHHHH, that 'herbie on rhodes' remix is one of my secret weapons. Also check out loopduell 1&2 for killer filter-disco-loop techno. Kind of half daft punk/half soundhack stuff. His recent jazzy stuff is pretty zzzz compared to that old stuff. Those early force-inc releases by him were killer

tylero (tylero), Monday, 20 February 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Vahid I really liked that Nite Life mix he did! Except I think I've lost it :-( There was one track on there in particular that I was in love with but I can't remember what it is now.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 20 February 2006 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, he's one of those 1 great track for every 5 "mehs" mixers.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 20 February 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

So. Apart from his cheesy tech/disco-house output (I think he's also John Skipper, on Catalyst. Dreadful stuff anyway) and kindly forgetting about his canon which should include music as dated as "Celtic Cross" and as annoying as "Rollerskate Disco" I think he did produce a few solid techno tunes.

The tuffest and coolest of all is probably the A-side of that "Two Space Cowboys On A Trip To Texas" twelve inch on Force Inc. Also check his "Relations" double 12" for Definitive Records (nice clear/light green vinyl job on that) which has three fun, acidy tunes at least : "Puppets", "The Move" and "Re-Linked".

If he really is behind the Ides record and its A-side track "Limer" (A.F.U. rec. #15), search that by him. His two releases on Plus 8 as Silvershower have not aged so well but there's a good (acid/techno) track on each of them.

Dusted the 10th Force Inc. release while reviewing his stuff: an album from the rave/trance days of Space Cube with Thomas Gerlach. "Open New Era" has a sweet E-fuelled piano and that's about it really. Also unearthed and still quite fresh-sounding : a remix of his "Litejuice" track by Jesper Dählback & Thomas Krome (on Strive Music). Très funky

And of course the "My Anthem" US remixes (Roy Davis & Robert Hood) and that Daft Punk remix of "Chord Memory" mentioned upthread.

A friendly guy I met just over 10 years ago. I still have this image of him as the archetypal German tourist : happy-go-lucky beer bellied sunburnt blond guy in sandals.

jean poulet (blunt), Monday, 20 February 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

'Never Give Up' is a good track from the 'Roller Skate Disco' 12. It's on Beatport.
