I'm expecting "Fairy Tale of New York" to take this, so I feel no conflict in voting for "2000 Miles."

"Fairytale" should win this going away, it's a strong contender for greatest Christmas song ever.

it's a fucking menace and Always On My Mind beating it to 1987 Xmas number 1 is the greatest thing to ever happen in the UK charts

"Christmas Wrapping" is an obvious omission.

I can only assume there was a rights issue in 1996, when this comp came out (weird, ‘cause the regular series had “I Know What Boys Like”).

I think that Ze records xmas lp is pretty good in its own right.
Hadn't been aware of this one a couple of weeks ago when I was being force fed saccharine bleurgh as xmas music.

There's also A Lump Of Coal which has Henry Rolling reading Twas The Night Before Christmas in a way that might scare the kiddies.

Note that I’m hunkered down through Sunday, I can happily say that I avoided “Fairytale of New York” this year!

I'm not grokking the hostility toward "Fairytale." Is it down to overexposure?

Hostile cussing? Cheap holiday inversion, replacing one kind of sentimentality with another closely related isotope of sentimentality? I still kind of like it though, although perhaps its coat is wearing thin in the blustery blizzardy breeze on the Bowery these days.

It's a blind spot of mine that I never would have come up with "hostile cussing" (by which I assume you mean Kirsty's use of a derogatory term for a gay man) as a reason to dislike the song--it seems fitting for the character. Cheap sentimentality, I suppose I can see, but that kind of sentimentality was often Shane's jam--I guess either you like it or you don't.

Overexposure x100. Though, as I said. I never liked it anyway, I never liked the Pogues full stop.

That's an odd comparison, at least from my personal point of view. I've known a lot of people who adore the Pogues since the 80s.
