I'm expecting "Fairy Tale of New York" to take this, so I feel no conflict in voting for "2000 Miles."

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 16 December 2022 16:25 (one year ago) link

"Fairytale" should win this going away, it's a strong contender for greatest Christmas song ever.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:48 (one year ago) link

it's a fucking menace and Always On My Mind beating it to 1987 Xmas number 1 is the greatest thing to ever happen in the UK charts

imago, Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:57 (one year ago) link

"Fairytale of New York" is a menace? GTFO.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:58 (one year ago) link

will i be the only vote for throwing muses?

judging the world through jaundiced eyes (Austin), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 17:02 (one year ago) link

I love that song but I don't recall it actually having anything to do with xmas other than the title

sleeve, Wednesday, 21 December 2022 17:02 (one year ago) link

(voted Pretenders)

“things fall apart” is my new wave xmas

lets hear some blues on those synths (brimstead), Friday, 23 December 2022 00:11 (one year ago) link

"Christmas Wrapping" is an obvious omission.

clemenza, Friday, 23 December 2022 02:01 (one year ago) link

I can only assume there was a rights issue in 1996, when this comp came out (weird, ‘cause the regular series had “I Know What Boys Like”).

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 23 December 2022 03:01 (one year ago) link

I think that Ze records xmas lp is pretty good in its own right.
Hadn't been aware of this one a couple of weeks ago when I was being force fed saccharine bleurgh as xmas music.

There's also A Lump Of Coal which has Henry Rolling reading Twas The Night Before Christmas in a way that might scare the kiddies.

Stevolende, Friday, 23 December 2022 08:37 (one year ago) link

Pretenders. Never liked Fairy Tale of NY.

Kiss Me, Dudley (Tom D.), Friday, 23 December 2022 08:51 (one year ago) link

Same

Note that I’m hunkered down through Sunday, I can happily say that I avoided “Fairytale of New York” this year!

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Friday, 23 December 2022 16:04 (one year ago) link

I'm not grokking the hostility toward "Fairytale." Is it down to overexposure?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 23 December 2022 16:05 (one year ago) link

Hostile cussing? Cheap holiday inversion, replacing one kind of sentimentality with another closely related isotope of sentimentality? I still kind of like it though, although perhaps its coat is wearing thin in the blustery blizzardy breeze on the Bowery these days.

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 16:09 (one year ago) link

How’s everybody doing Whamageddon!-wise?

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 16:09 (one year ago) link

It's a blind spot of mine that I never would have come up with "hostile cussing" (by which I assume you mean Kirsty's use of a derogatory term for a gay man) as a reason to dislike the song--it seems fitting for the character. Cheap sentimentality, I suppose I can see, but that kind of sentimentality was often Shane's jam--I guess either you like it or you don't.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 23 December 2022 16:15 (one year ago) link

Overexposure x100. Though, as I said. I never liked it anyway, I never liked the Pogues full stop.

Twa pehs an' an ingin ane an' aw (Tom D.), Friday, 23 December 2022 16:19 (one year ago) link

I've not met many, if any, people who dislike the Pogues.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:05 (one year ago) link

But you live in The States, no?

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:30 (one year ago) link

exactly

sleeve, Friday, 23 December 2022 19:31 (one year ago) link

Yes, I do. Are they more disliked in the U.K.?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:32 (one year ago) link

The song is more overexposed.

Twa pehs an' an ingin ane an' aw (Tom D.), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:33 (one year ago) link

You don’t hear often people here complaining about The Beautiful South either.

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:36 (one year ago) link

That's an odd comparison, at least from my personal point of view. I've known a lot of people who adore the Pogues since the 80s.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:39 (one year ago) link

Boozy misanthropes of a certain stripe.

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:41 (one year ago) link

I don't get how a Xmas song can lack sentimentality. That's the point!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:42 (one year ago) link

Dexys would be a good comparison - I don't know if anyone here actively hates Kevin Rowland, but i swear if I hear Come On Eileen one more time,,, Fairytale is worse though as you're guaranteed to hear it here a billion times every December

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:43 (one year ago) link

I love Wham!'s "Last Christmas" and airplay will never smother it.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:43 (one year ago) link

Feel like that would have been the cue for Morbius to come and make a cutting remark and then for Eric to make nice.

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:46 (one year ago) link

more like the other way around

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:46 (one year ago) link

Can't help but feel a little bit heartbroken every time I hear George's voice tbh. Not that Kirsty MacColl's death wasn't as tragic

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:48 (one year ago) link

Anyway, voted 2000 Miles

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:50 (one year ago) link

Didn’t even look at the POLL yet until you just posted that. Will be voting that way too.

A Kestrel for a Neve (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 December 2022 19:52 (one year ago) link

Haha, I'm not a fan either tbh. her death was really horrible on a human level though

I don't think of Fairytale as a New Wave song.

George’s hair and overall look in the video is 10/10

yeah where is Things Fall Apart?

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Friday, 23 December 2022 22:28 (one year ago) link

on the Ze album where it belongs ;)

I just noticed noted New Wave artist Bing Crosby is in it. Fair enough as he was more radical than some of the others.
