worst name alone is Jambang, but worst combo is "Hor - Slo N' Sleazy" by a long shot

Greg Ginn & The Taylor Texas Corrugators - Goof Off Experts

The existence of every note of music Greg Ginn has played post-1986 really makes the existence of the Black Flag discography that much more of a miracle.

Voted Mojack - Rub-A-Dub as it sounds like a Greg Ginn reggae album, although it appears to have never actually been released thank christ. Who actually buys these records anyway?

this thread was inspired by "corporate rock sucks: the rise and fall of sst records" by jim ruland. i am far from an expert on sst or ginn or black flag but the lesson of that book is that as much as ginn's whole thing is "i do what i want and i don't care what anyone else thinks about it," he has always had other significant collaborators whenever his music or his businesses have been successful. as soon as he was the sole force in his bands, their music became unlistenable, and as soon as he was the sole head of SST, it fell apart very quickly

that book is really good btw. recommended

nothing beats Ginn firing his vocalist ON STAGE in 2011

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 January 2023 20:09 (one year ago) link

the screw radio releases are excerpts of radio shows broadcast after ginn leased time on a santa ana radio station, with ginn and his buddies playing characters

I worked for a small music wholesaler in the late 80s-early 90s. SST was always difficult; they were usually out of their most popular titles. It didn't seem like there was anybody but Greg working there.

Flag, Minutemen, Dü...nope, sorry. How about some Zoogz Rift?

El Bad is kinda amazing as a name. At once terrible and hilarious.

Also I got said book post-Xmas and it's on the to-read-here-soon list.

I started a "Fuck Greg Ginn" chant at one of the Flag shows in 2016, it was glorious

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 January 2023 21:43 (one year ago) link

Dukowski was the heart and soul of both SST and BF, I will not be taking questions

xp HERO

sleeve, Friday, 13 January 2023 21:44 (one year ago) link

The show and the chant obv.

I saw the Black Flag with Ginn in 2020 and it was so devoid of energy and passion I left six songs in. I'd driven an hour to see it

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 January 2023 21:44 (one year ago) link

Special place in Hell for a thief like him

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 January 2023 21:46 (one year ago) link

there's a poignant quote from Chuck in the BF book by Stevie Chick (also recommended) where he's referring to the weekend where Ginn went off with some dude and got turned on to weed - "that's when he went away and never came back"

but yes, no excuse, special place in hell, etc

sleeve, Friday, 13 January 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

Did I ever expound on my theory here that Greg Ginn and Tom Scholz are in fact the same person? Look at the timeline - it all matches. Plus they're both tall. Not much similarity in the guitar styles though I must admit.

So is it just a bunch of yours, or is it ..more than a feeling

Also reading the new SST book at the moment. It rounds up the history really well (speaking as someone who doesn't really know much about it) but it doesn't try to illustrate the character or personality of all the people involved. Very much sticking to what happened, or what someone says happened, without any judgement. Feels like it should be paired up with an oral history or something to give the story a bit more flavour.

an old friend of mine worked there circa 1987, I have two stories I recall

1. HR living in the merch closet and smoking tons of weed in there
2. Chuck playing Julie London and being contemptuous of anyone questioning her brilliance

sleeve, Friday, 13 January 2023 23:34 (one year ago) link

I saw Black Flag are about to tour UK/Ireland iin the recent Viva Le Rock and wondered if that was remotely worth catching.

Thankfully do have great memories of the 1984 band at the Marquee.

Did recently hear a Mojack track that did sound decent. I thought Gone were supposed to be good but I think I mainly know the band as part of Rollins Band.
