No Lil Yachty thread?

How is this possible?

Nobody ever loved "Broccoli" or "One Night" or "iSpy"?
No fans of his collab tracks with Tee Grizzley or Juice WRLD or Trippie Redd or...?

I feel like he's made a lot of his best music after people stopped paying attention when'Teenage Emotions' bricked. 'Lil Boat 2' and 'Nuthin' 2 Prove' had loads of killer tracks... the mixtape with Michigan rappers was 60% super great... one-offs like "Cortex" and "Rocc Climbing" (with Remble) ruled... then a fluke hit with the slight, but nicely odd "Poland" last year... and now, a "psych" record ('Let's Start Here'... not 100% how I feel about this one yet).

So... you liked the early funny stuff? "Poland"? None of it? What does ILM think?

mr.raffles, Saturday, 28 January 2023 04:15 (two years ago)

i liked "one night"

dyl, Saturday, 28 January 2023 04:53 (two years ago)

was obsessed with Charli's 'after the after party'

will 'Poland' place in the top 77 of '22??

blue6ave, Saturday, 28 January 2023 05:09 (two years ago)

was never anything more than a meme before so i'm curious if this psych album is anything at all

ufo, Saturday, 28 January 2023 06:42 (two years ago)

update: it's vaguely novel i guess but not really compelling

ufo, Saturday, 28 January 2023 07:19 (two years ago)

One Night and Broccoli are great, I'm sure there's plenty of talk on the rolling whatever they're called that year threads on rap

at the time found his quotes on Biggie and Pac refreshing and fun, but I guess it wasn't a lot of fun for him since he later received death threats for it

Listening to 'running out of time' atm... I like it way more than 'Poland'

Saw Questlove was repping his new psychedelic rock record. Credits look like a Pitchfork EOY list!: Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift), Justin Raisen (Yves Tumor), Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Mica Tenenbaum & Matthew Lewin (Magdaleena Bay), Alex G, Mac DeMarco, Benjamin Goldwasser (MGMT).

Haha wtf at those credits... also TIL Magdalena Bay are involved on 'running out of time', makes sense now why it was the first song that caught my attention.

xp ha to each his own, but certainly not what I was expecting.

have you ever wanted to listen to "breathe," "great gig in the sky," and "minnesota" at the same time? well, here's "the black seminole"!

sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 30 January 2023 23:18 (two years ago)

Thank you Lil Yachty for saving rock

it was a cynical marketing rip of something keef said offhandedly which provoked controversy

I only know one pac song. And one Biggie song! Didnt grow up listening to them if i was i was to young to remember! https://t.co/9r3o2CSyGX

— Glory Boy (@ChiefKeef) July 5, 2016

it was yachty's whole MO ... keef would instagram his friends doing paintball, yachty would shoot a music video with paintball guns

never been a huge fan of his music, definitely not a fan of the 'pivot to urban outfitters vinyl'

the thing in defense of 'poland' is it at least sounds of-a-piece with minnesota/1 night type records he started off with.

So where's Chief Keef's Pink Floyd tribute album?

MarkoP, Tuesday, 31 January 2023 03:36 (two years ago)

Listened in full for a second time today… I’m not fully convinced on this one. There’s some things I like but it feels sort of clunky.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 31 January 2023 05:21 (two years ago)

There’s albums which you can immediatly tell they’ll age bad and this is one of those.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 31 January 2023 05:22 (two years ago)

Also not fully convinced.

For me, while there's plenty to love in there, the dragging half-time tempos and general bloat (lil bloat?) have my mind wandering. I'm also not a sprawling rock opus kinda guy (whether this is a GOOD "sprawling rock opus" is another question), so maybe this one just won't be for me.

mr.raffles, Tuesday, 31 January 2023 13:38 (two years ago)

I kind of like the vibe of the album but it lacks for songs. There are engaging bits and pieces but don’t feel like they add up to much.

it gets better after the truly awful first song. “drive me crazy” is pretty crisp, and “running out of time” probably makes best use of his voice

still, don’t see myself going back to listen again

sault bae (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 31 January 2023 14:14 (two years ago)

xp agreed. There are some good ideas, but the thing doesn't hold together because his vocal and lyrical performances aren't particularly compelling. If there's a thread, I couldn't find it. So it has neither the coherence/tightness of an album made by a traditional band, nor the dynamism of well-orchestrated pop/rap albums. The Magdaleena Bay song is ok (though too long), but I'd rather just listen to their albums.

still a nice surprise and pleasant listen

haven't listened to this yet but I used to be dismissive when people made highly derivative albums, but now I think it's kind of cool. I may not like it but they can work as a gateway to the original influences for younger people. I imagine some kids who liked that Childish Gambino album a few years back went on to listen to Funkadelic and Sly.

xheugy eddy (D-40), Tuesday, 31 January 2023 17:44 (two years ago)

idk I think its possible to approach that spotify alt funk pop playlistcore music and do something interesting. possible

but to me it really has to do something exceptional to be worth it. that sound is everywhere, it's not a risk, its a hedge towards festivals and sync placements

well-written and reasoned, i mean, not that it’s a rave or even positive

sault bae (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 1 February 2023 14:08 (two years ago)

Listening to this now having known nothing of Lil Yachty before this record. Obv I’m a fan of hoary prof rock and I give this two thumbs up. It just sounds good; I’m not going to worry about how derivative it is when Glass Hammer exist. It’s clearly more than that. Whether it stays with me or not dunno but it’s a rare bright thing in a really shitty time for me.

Will second the quality of that p4k review. Put a finger on trends I'd been vaguely aware of but hadn't strung together. (fwiw I really liked Poland but haven't heard anything else, including the new album)

vexingvexillologist, Thursday, 9 February 2023 17:53 (two years ago)

one year passes...

Idk if this (Bad Cameo) is a good Yachty record, but it's a pretty decent James Blake record.

(it is unintentionally funny at times when JB's voice comes in after Yachty's autotune singing)

The “Poland” / “strike” 1-2 punch was pretty great and honestly turned me around on him more than I indicated upthread

xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 28 June 2024 18:00 (eleven months ago)

Strike feels really underrated. Did a handful of tracks sort of in that fashion around it, then seems to have abandoned that thread. Up there w Cortex (great Cash Cobain beat) for me.

mr.raffles, Saturday, 29 June 2024 14:53 (eleven months ago)

My buddy Joe works with Lil Yachty. He cowrote the song Black Seminole and plays the guitar on it. He's working with him on his next record too.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 30 June 2024 01:53 (eleven months ago)

I really enjoyed this... and I'm no fan of Blake's voice.

I also really enjoy this early-eighties-genesis-collab-with-FSOL-ass album
