Inspired by hearing "Here We Are" in the grocery store just now...

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6fv3OlLIQLrkxlm1eJhli2?si=660fba019e434f25

(I know probably a lot of these probably don't have DX7 synth on them. But they remind me of that time period, so.)

"Save the Best for Last" is perfection.

I was about to vote that but then saw Toni

No Chicago/Peter Cetera?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2023 02:32 (two years ago)

Great poll. Extremely hard choice btw Boyz II Men and Toni

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 13 February 2023 03:06 (two years ago)

Tough choices, I have a sentimental soft spot for lots of these

Auf Der Martini (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 13 February 2023 03:11 (two years ago)

Save the Best for Last just over That's What Love is For

Another Day In Paradise

You Got It All
Save the Best For Last
Let’s Wait Awhile
From a Distance
End of the Road

(also loving Neanderthal’s thread-appropriate display name)

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Monday, 13 February 2023 16:54 (two years ago)

I probably will end up voting for "Here We Are" because it's just such an idyllic moment, but "You Got It All" and "Rush Rush" are also basically perfect.

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Monday, 13 February 2023 16:55 (two years ago)

After due consideration I voted "Rush Rush"; it is the song here with the least flab.

Second choice might be "From a Distance."

Auf Der Martini (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 13 February 2023 16:59 (two years ago)

Toni

not too strange just bad audio (brimstead), Monday, 13 February 2023 17:04 (two years ago)

btw Elizabeth Wolfgramm sang "You Got It All" when she was 12. 12!!!!

you know what the average 12 year old in my 6th grade choir sounded like? even the best didn't sound like that.

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 02:18 (two years ago)

admittedly I got a little sad last night reading this thread as it reminded me of my late friend Di, who sang it for me on request once. but you know....it's a good memory so I'll smile and think of it right now.

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 02:19 (two years ago)

I did not know that about Elizabeth Wolfgramm! Fine performance.

Like, I knew about e.g., Annabella Lwin and Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. But I did not know this and this new knowledge enriches my existence, thanks.

Another data point supporting my thesis about the dizzying eclecticism of the pop charts during that heady time.

Auf Der Martini (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 02:41 (two years ago)

Wait … Rupert Holmes wrote “You Got It All”?!

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 03:01 (two years ago)

yep!

vanessa williams song needs a final verse where she's like "j/k i'm dumping your ass"

ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 15 February 2023 23:37 (two years ago)

you went and saved the best for last
but it's still not good enough and i'm dumping your ass

Write in vote for Berlin's "Take My Breath Away"

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:02 (two years ago)

Oh if we're doing write-in votes I think I might go with "The Living Years" by Mike + the Mechanics.

I believe Steve Winwood favored the PPG WaveTerm synth, not the DX7, but the intro to "While You See a Chance" is pretty classic.

serif don't like it (rock the typeface) (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:37 (two years ago)

Yeah that intro is golden

WHILE THERE IS TIME

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:46 (two years ago)

("While there is time" is from "The Finer Things"; both are good)

tajmahalia jackson (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:51 (two years ago)

Lol I'm dumb. I love both though

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 February 2023 00:02 (two years ago)

When I saw this last week I thought 'This is obviously Toni but i can't pull the trigger because there's an outside chance it maybe it could be Vanessa'.

Had a change of heart and decided a moment too late to vote for 'From A Distance' which feels like it's always existed, because it's so heavy handed that it made me deeply uncomfortable even as a small child and because the disembodied quality of her voice and the DX7 approaches something heavenly while also being foreboding and it creeps me the fuck out.

The field divisions are fastened with felicitations. (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 25 February 2023 00:28 (two years ago)

I do love that "After All" got a pair of votes. I adore that damned thing.

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Saturday, 25 February 2023 15:28 (two years ago)

I forgot what I voted for.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 February 2023 15:33 (two years ago)

to be clear I don't dislike "Un-break my Heart", I just prefer other Braxton songs to it

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 February 2023 15:34 (two years ago)

i didn't vote on principle (because i hate most of these songs; esp "unbreak my heart' grrrrr NO!!) but if i had it would have been for janet.

(shocking, i know!)

up and down. SO FAST! stay together.💙 (Austin), Saturday, 25 February 2023 15:38 (two years ago)

undo this hurt, Neanderthal

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 February 2023 15:38 (two years ago)

lol

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 February 2023 15:40 (two years ago)

a lot of songs in this poll are sentimentally treasured (which is not quite the same thing as "good") but... was I the sole vote for "Rush Rush"?

nat king cole slaw (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 25 February 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

I would not have expected a landslide from this collection of songs
