Saw Soul Asylum at a suburban fair circa 2004. Absolutely awful show.

might as well just repeat many pub conversations and say the first few Soul Asylum LPs on Twin/Tone, both produced by bob mould, are real different - basically a really great replacements tribute band

the relationship between the two tracks feels like one of those youtube edits where they've shifted the song from major to minor key or vice-versa

they're not even actually very close beyond a few melodic phrases here and there and the plodding acoustic guitar arrangement, the chords are pretty different

It's basically the way the melody moves in the first line of the verse, plus obviously the similarity between runaway and runner.

Voting “runner” because I grew up with slacker indie and I like pianos and runaway train doesn’t have pianos.

Also “runner” has the right length. “Runaway train” feels like it goes on forever

Yeah just listened to them each back to back and "Runaway Train" is so. fucking. long. and doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere. Great chorus though.

That was kind of the tail end of big media campaigns about runaways, which seemed like a ubiquitous feature of the '70s and '80s when I was growing up. There were always TV movies and comic book storylines about runaway kids, very Dickensian. I assume there are still plenty of runaway kids but these days more talked about in terms of trafficking.

And an actual band called the Runaways, obv.

social media and the internet kind of put an end to "runaway kids" in some ways... hard to imagine a 12 year old abandoning their phone and trying to live off the grid.

not to say that kids don't disappear all the time, just that if they're doing it of their own volition and someone's looking for them, it's likely a lot easier to find them in 2023 than it was in 1993.
