Did. Not dod. Sigh.
presumably there's going to be a lot more of this kind of thing in the future given the sheer amount of music uploaded to the internet? Is there already a crate digging culture around obscure internet-era tracks, trying to find out where they came from, who made them etc? Apparently they found half a million of 50 million uploaded songs that MySpace accidently deleted:

I thought this was going to be that classic Reply All episode:
https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/o2h8bx
A man in California is haunted by the memory of a pop song from his youth. He can remember the lyrics and the melody. But the song itself has vanished, completely scrubbed from the internet.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 February 2023 20:01 (two years ago)
I thought it was going to be “Grim Reapah…”

xxp jfc what a completely unusable website, link to the site they talk about nowhere to be found, just swamped with ads and popups. Does anyone have a link to the actual site?

I haven't heard about this one, but I remember there was another 80s pop song that it took the internet years to track down. Someone taped it onto cassette from the radio in the 80s and posted it to Youtube a while ago. They finally found it at some point in the last few years, and it was by a European solo artist (maybe a German or Dutch guy singing in English) and turned out to be available on Spotify. I'm trying to find it again, but the search results are dominated by this new mysterious lost song lol. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

xpost - from that Wikipedia link I posted:
On May 27, 2019, Australian website Tone Deaf wrote the earliest article focusing on the song, with author Tyler Jenke discussing the preliminary stages of the search for the track, and noting that the search was similar to a 2013 search for a song which was ultimately identified as "Up On The Roof" by Swedish musician Johan Lindell.

I had no idea this was so common!

oh sorry, StanM I overlooked your post before mine. Yeah, it's surprising how often this happens

Grim Reapah is way more mysterious because (a) we don't even have a Youtube rip of it and (b) burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb.

The other obvious one to talk about is this, though a different situation as it was a name with no music instead of music without a name.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ready_%27n%27_Steady

still doesn't look like this has been resolved huh?
most likely answer is that it was just some local band's demo, albeit a particularly good sounding one
pretty amusing that the people who made this are probably still just walking around with no idea how many have puzzled over this

i couldn't be happier that it remains unsolved and i hope to see a lot more of this phenomenon. the world needs more anonymously created music imo.
maybe that'll be the new "punk rock" - hit songs that nobody knows where they came from.
(of course there's no money in that, so whatever)

yeah I hope it never gets solved. in part because the real answer almost can't be more interesting than the mystery
reminds me of when someone actually found the infamous "Ken - By Request Only" LP and ripped it. and it turned out to be...pretty dull! but imagining what that album might've sounded like was a lot of fun.

"pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" and whatnot.

be even better if they're well aware and don't care/want to make themselves known.
real heroes don't say a fucking word imo.

you've heard of Ghost and Imperial Triumphant, who perform (or used to) in virtual anonymity.
we've taken it one step further - now we will release our albums sans song titles or album title.

Most of it sounds pretty similar to this song by honeymoon suite, with different words
