Kelly Osborne - Shut Up

It might be my imagination, but this is rather good, isn't it? Sounds like a great lost Shampoo single. The verses have at least two good hooks, the pre-chorus is delightfully pop and her faux-punk sneer is endearing.

And yet, this will sink without a trace and be largely forgotten as she is remembered for her mediocre hit. Where's the justice?

Anyone else like it?

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 1 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good, it'll be a hit. Top 5 at least.

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 1 December 2002 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's alright, kind of like an average Muffs song. She should hire Kim Shattuck to be her Linda Perry.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 1 December 2002 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I
need
to
hear
this

(anyone want to buy my autographed Muffs 7"s from back in the day?)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Muffs! Really need to get those old albums, they keep popping up in the used bins.

What I saw of the video the other day was bemusingly entertaining.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a bit disappointed. She's supposed to be the cool altenative to Avril? No way! Also I have a friend who likes and sounds like Kelly but is a million times cooler, so why would I bother with the real thing?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

She's supposed to be the cool altenative to Avril?

She's supposed to be cool?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

She was interviewed somewhere recently, possibly RS, and said something to the effect of "well, if I wasn't Ozzy's daughter, my album would be treated with the sort've respect a serious artist deserves."

To which I'd reply:

Honey, if you weren't Ozzy's daughter, you wouldn't HAVE an album to be worried about.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

how many teenage girls do you have to crush before youre happy

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 2 December 2002 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

all of them: rock'n'roll is abt hideous old men w.no sense of humour

mark s (mark s), Monday, 2 December 2002 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Trife I'm SURE she'd be DEVASTATED by Alex's brutality...

Clarke B. (emily), Monday, 2 December 2002 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely she must have been joking.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Funniest thing ever: that episode of the Osbournes where Sharon's complaining that their next door neighbour is a richboy who does nothing and gets all his money from his father, whilst Jack and Kelly agree with her. That'd be Sharon "Don Arden's Daughter" Osbourne and Jack and Kelly, spawn of Ozzy, then.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw her perform the song on Mad TV the other night and I had to change the channel before it was over. Perhaps it was just the craptitude of that live performance, but I can't imagine enjoying a studio version of that song.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 2 December 2002 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Muffs.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 2 December 2002 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i like muff

chaki (chaki), Monday, 2 December 2002 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Muffs were okay. Muff is better. But doesn't "Shut Up" have EXACTLY the same melody as "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne?? (Plus, they both wear ties!)

c.e., Monday, 2 December 2002 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but kelly is way way way hotter and 10x cooler than avril.

more girls should wear ties.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why people think Kelly Osbourne is hot.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"how many teenage girls do you have to crush before youre happy"

I'm not a playa, I just crush a lot.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

s trife steals my jokes.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 2 December 2002 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If only she would do what the title of the song commands.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

See? Now who's the meanie?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Her and Avril should either kill each other or make a suicide pact. It could happen! (TM)

David Allen, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, I think that Big Pun quote might be the funniest comeback I've ever seen you use.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Implying, as it does, that trife crushesfucks as many teenage girls as he can in a failed bid to quench his bitterness.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

crushesfucks

I read that as "crushfucks" and was greatly amused.

David Allen, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

If Dave Barry was on this forum he'd say "The CrushFucks would be a great name for a band..."

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So...when's Jack Osbornes 3CD nu-Metal box set extravaganza come out?

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate kelly osborne!
but the songs kinda cool...
i still dont like her!
and to everyone who knows me:I look NOTHING like her.

Ashley Young, Monday, 9 December 2002 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realize that "Shut Up" was the name of Kelly Osbourne's album until yesterday. I just assumed that edward o, as the originator of the thread, actually wanted her to shut up (a sentiment I do not disagree with).

I think we should make "Shut Up" into a new ILM category where we tell annoying musicians (and Kelly Osbourne) to shut up.

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 9 December 2002 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But doesn't "Shut Up" have EXACTLY the same melody as "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne?? (Plus, they both wear ties!)

the verse was so fuckin nicked, i hate kelly now, at least avril (aparently)had to work for her fame and shit

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Monday, 9 December 2002 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I do wish she'd shut up, except when she is singing glorious pieces of pop genius like "Shut Up".

She recently hated on the muffins of the mighty Atomic Kitten; "they've covered Blondie's "The Tide Is High" and they've ruined it!". That's wrong on at least two different levels.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 9 December 2002 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And she said Billy what's-his-name-from-Smashing-Pumpkins's new band sounded like elevator musak. Things is, she was right.

Kelly's Shut Up is tres punque.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 9 December 2002 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like something Transvision Vamp turned down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Atomic Kitten is viciously horrible, she's totally right about them. They should be shot in the face.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but she has a grudge against Corgan via her mum's short-lived managing gig for the Pumpkins (i totally typed Pimpkins first!)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pimpkins! Beautiful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi. Avril stopped wearing ties, like, a week ago. Kelly is just stealing her look. Also, Avril's new song lets me see inside...so I can see the real Avril.

Run! Daron is here! ;-) BTW, I will get something written for FakeJazz out tonight...er, really, yeah. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure. This is only second post to this. I only chime in when it is about something really important.

Daron Gardner (Daron Gardner), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

hi.

i just heard this song for the first time. i saw the video. except for when she gets wet. that's not good. and. i can really say. it's really good. i was getting kind of emotional, i guess. when i was watching it. and. listen. i know. this is what the world needs right now. really. that sounds stupid but it's a good song. avril might have the credibility but kelly is more punk, i think. avril is the david bowie to kelly's iggy. i've never seen the osbournes. maybe that ruins it for people.

i really wish i could be a 14 year old girl. living right now. or before. or my age and be a girl. this is one of those things that makes me feel like that. imagine it. i would be the end of history. i've wasted my entire life. seriously. this makes me kind of bitter. i squandered my adolescence. that's something far too precious to squander. listen. actually. i probably didn't squander it. but now that i know what i know. anyways. it's still stupid when she gets wet.

i got an erection while watching the video because i was imagining her masturbating. she's an ugly girl, really. she looks kind of like the new snl gurl. the one who's kind of trashy. she plays trashy characters. amy poehler. i looked it up. i'll have to watch closely next time and remember how to pronounce it. but uglier than the snl girl. better, though. she's got a thing. if i knew her from school she'd be a spoiled bitch. fucking whore. but i can still picture her masturbating. massaging her clitoris. and her shaved adolescent vagina and beautiful fatgirl breasts. i wouldn't make love to her. i would make out with her and. i bet she's a total slut. i would take advantage of her and break her fucking heart. fucking slut. you don't deserve any better. i don't mean it. she's beautiful. kelly. you're beautiful. maybe she just reminds me of my sister.

d k (d k), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
yow. I almost didn't revive this thread after reading that last post. But anyway, I am totally ga-ga over the album and I'm curious if anybody else has heard the whole thing. Obvious sonic comparisons are the Donnas, but also the Go-Go's and Scandal. If new wave means punk with the pop turned up, this totally qualifies. I'll admit that a collaboration between Kelly Osbourne, Celine Dion-producer Rick Wake (oooh, if only it was Rick Wakeman! that'd be a gas) and some people named Powerpack has no right to be good, but it totally is.

I even like the closing ballad now. It's totally juvenile in its profuse declaration of devotion, but it's sweet as hell if you think she's writing it to Sharon & Ozzy (or you, if you prefer). Personal favorite is "Come Dig Me Out" which sounds like Sleater-Kinney if they got over themselves.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I really enjoyed it - reminded me of prime Kim Wilde and the Josie & Pussycats soundtrack band..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

WOW! That d k post is amazing.

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

like Avid Merrion....ON ACID

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

...what makes me smile about them is that the Osbournes truly believe they are relevant, rather than dated hoary old rockers who people want to see dying on screen.
Let's be honest, all we watch for is to see if Ozzy's still alive, if the dogs have shit everywhere (again) and if Kelly's lost any weight/had a decent haircut/discovered a stylist.
Remember Sharon shouting over the neighbours wall and complaining that they werre rich European kids who loved trhat "fucking awful Euro techno shit". Get with the times, Shaz. Rock is dead, remember.

russ t, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I only just heard this and it's great. I am useless at spotting similarities between songs unless they're REALLY REALLY BLATANT (eg Hollies/Radiohead) so I don't mind about the Avril thing.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me of this early 90s female fronted groonge band, but I cannot for the life of me remember their name. I like it a lot.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i still luv kelly.

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

avril is the david bowie to kelly's iggy

I really like this idea. I wish the actual music lived up to it, though.

(cue somebody saying "yeah Iggy's no Kelly, that's for sure")

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a really really great single, along with the Zwan album, Kelly's is the only other essential album I can think of, when is it out?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"(eg Hollies/Radiohead)"

explain please.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

kelly's album is already out and is a corker - "Shut Up" isn't even the best track

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

really! Cool! I shall be looking out for it!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Shakey - "The Air That I Breathe" and "Creep" are very similar and for once even I can notice it.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only one who doesnt think its much cop? i do quite like Kelly tho...for Christmas I hear she wants a couple of ponies and to do a duet with Peaches called 'Stinky Lover'

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

kelly roxxxx u r all gay

kelly + peaches = electric sound of WAHEY

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
well for me it was over with Kelly when heared the madonna thingy
i can't imagin anything interesting || smart about it
i don't see her as any kind of an alternative to Avril, but then again i don't even get this whole rediculous Hard-Rock revival thats taking place now (Strokes excluded, they're an original rockabilly + Proto Punk + Post punk greatness!)

"shut up"
first i heared it i thought.... hhmmm

but then..... naaaaa.

rex jr., Wednesday, 26 February 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Two points:

1)I never got the Hollies "Air that I breathe" and Radiohead "Creep" comparisons AT ALL - I must be cloth-eared.

2) Re the "Turn off that Euro techno shit!" and "you spoiled rich boy" episode of the Osbornes - that was fucking hilarious, - cue Jack with with his transatlantic rich kid accent "Let's put orn sum Saabath!" lol...

The best thing about the song in question is when she goes "1 - 2 - 3 - 4!" but that was done far far far better by Huggy Bear on "High Street Jupiter Cone" - anyone remember that one?
