Ibex Clone

It's been a while since the last time I was completely wow'ed by a contemporary guitarist in an indie rock setting (Madeline Kenney was one), but rabbit holing on spotify last night I came across George Williford's Ibex Clone and I've already listened to it 3 or 4 times. Didn't clock it until watching the video that he's playing and singing at the same time. Just ordered the LP (and the one LP by the last band he was in, Hash Redactor—both on Goner Records, which I always think of as a straight Garage label but maybe I shouldn't). Anyway, enjoy!

I'm intrigued by this style of fingerpicking while holding the tremolo arm.

Kevin Shields does a similar thing, but he's a strummer and keeps it in the traditional location below the strings.

I think it speaks a lot to my younger self's fandom of Eric Johnson's detuned bendy riffing in Archers of Loaf, a playing style I've never been able to replicate.

yeah, it is a bit reminiscent of some of the archers stuff.

i can only clearly hear the tremolo during some of his solos, but he's also using very drippy modulation at the same time he is playing this way so it's probably all additive.

some video here of this guy playing, watch closely from like 4:00 - 4:20. he uses the tremolo to do like accentuated bends on individual notes, not for shields style general warbling

the blurb on their bandcamp cites Gimmer Nicholson as an influence which I wouldn't have thought of but totally makes sense

Yeah, it's fascinating stuff.

And I definitely hear Chameleons in a few Ibex Clone songs.
