there was a little discussion in the r&b thread but this is good enough to need its own thread.
eclectic, fragmented r&b with plenty of breakbeats (r&breakbeats is really in at the moment, huh)

personally thrilled about her using a sample from the bomberman hero soundtrack in "reset!"

a lot of manic horny energy on this album
― satori enabler (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 5 March 2023 14:19 (three years ago)
i keep reading r&breakbeat as b&breakfast (bed and breakfast)
― flopson, Sunday, 5 March 2023 14:31 (three years ago)
Yeah it’s a sharp album, like her work a lot.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 March 2023 15:06 (three years ago)
deciding i don't really like this. some of the beats are good, but it's mostly tuneless and her voice isn't anything special at all. sounds great while it's on but nothing has any resonance. ufo used "fragmented" and i agree with that, but more as demerit in this case.
― .austinuos, plug forth. (Austin), Sunday, 5 March 2023 16:27 (three years ago)
youse hear fragmentation, i hear exciting energy, but that's how it goes
― satori enabler (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 5 March 2023 16:29 (three years ago)
Couldn't Wait to Tell You was really good too, loved this one (and had no idea there was a video til now)

"Wild Animals" came on the other week while I was listening to the ilm 2023 playlist you've been helping to assemble Moka, which then led to me listening to the album for the first time and I've gotta say, it has really stuck with me.
I don't listen to much rnb these days but I feel like liv.e works together quite a few interesting threads into her own distinctive voice. I get some Hiatus Kaiyote, a dash of the whole West Coast Get Down thing (maybe it's just a few sax or sax-like flourishes), and some whacky Tyler the Creator vocal processing, along with all the electro stuff. Manic but also pretty playful, adventurous, with something new and interesting around each corner.

Wow, I LOVE this -- out of nowhere, a cover of "Kissability" by Sonic Youth, very much in her own vein.

― imago, Thursday, 1 February 2024 19:51 (two years ago)
i didn't think i really had to campaign for it because there seemed to be some enthusiasm in this thread, it's the sort of thing people usually love here, it got bnm so wasn't exactly obscure, and so on
― ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2024 19:57 (two years ago)
'find out' omg
― imago, Thursday, 1 February 2024 20:04 (two years ago)

― imago, Saturday, 30 March 2024 22:42 (two years ago)
My wife put me on to the new EP today, loveit!
I had completely forgot I had downloaded “Girl in the Half Pearl” too and will give it another listen.
In the meantime I have also really enjoyed this DJ set on The Lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sxL440tqAQ

$14 for a 7 track digital EP though, I don’t know if it is THAT good.
― Chewshabadoo, Friday, 3 May 2024 14:33 (one year ago)
Lol had no idea there was a new album and thought it was another artist with the same name because this sounds nothing like the previous one. Was not expecting synth punk at all from her.

Good stuff.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 November 2025 01:21 (five months ago)
GENA album is fantastic. Need to spend some more time with it, but This is so Crazy is an early favorite. Kind of gives me Prince vibes. Hope they make more music together.
― Ubiquitor, Monday, 9 March 2026 23:23 (one month ago)
Very much so!
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 March 2026 23:56 (one month ago)
Yeah this one is great. Also many tracks give heavy Erykah Badu vibes (doobiedoowe, unspokerrn).
Fans of this one may also enjoy the latest Jill Scott one. They inhabit a similar universe.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 02:37 (one month ago)
it’s really fantastic. reminds me a bit of the keiyaa album from last year and georgia anne muldrow’s collabs with madlib
― harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 02:57 (one month ago)
great album! definitely hearing the georgia anne muldrow vibe throughout.
also really like her recent cover of Talking Heads' "I Zimbra":
