Roy Buchanan (S & D)

Roy's had a few mentions on ILM but no dedicated thread, so I figured this could be the one.

I found a copy of "A Street Called Straight" and have given it a few listens in the past week and was pretty impressed on it as a record. I knew a few of the tunes from the 'Sweet Dreams' comp, but this is a pretty good LP.

Album came out in '76 on Atlantic and they got hims some jazz/studio ringers like the Brecker Brothers, Billy Cobham, Andy Newmark and others (including even Luther Vandross on one track).

"The Messiah Will Come Again" is one of Buchanan's best known songs and I would think the live versions are better. I'd think any Television fan could dig this one.

It's got a couple of slinky kinda Tony Joe White funk tunes in "Caruso" (written by Buchanan) and "Good God Have Mercy" (written by Billy Roberts - who is mostly known for writing "Hey Joe").

There is some decent 70s funk sounds with some chicken scratch guitar I am sure has gotten sampled somewhere.

Good record, one definitely worth picking out of the cheap box and/or giving a freebee listen on the YaTube.

the EARLY YEARS comp on krazy kat is the only one i feel like i need:

although i'm less allergic to his shtick then i was previously; in my case that partly has to do with jim campilongo's proselytism and being more open to "hot" guitar sounds / lineage. i should look into his '70s records soon.

here's a choice track from the comp:

Living in the DC Maryland area I have read and heard from folks about Buchanan. But I have superficially I guess just assumed he was a blues-rock guitar soloist trying to be flashy and never really listened much

Yeah, the Early Years stuff is good, it's got some rockabilly energy that I like...

This track is cinematic and intense. It would definitely fit in a mix with "Maggot Brain".

There was a town,
There was a strange little town, they called "The World"
It was a lonely, lonely little town
'Til one day a stranger appeared
And their hearts rejoiced
And the sad little town was happy again
But there was some that doubted
They disbelieved so they mocked him
And that stranger, he went away
Now the sad little town that was sad yesterday
It's a lot sadder today
I walked in a lot of places I never should have been
But I know that the Messiah, he will come again
