I love this album.

I was gong to do this poll around the time I did the Up the Bracket poll but never got around to it. Then it fell off the radar and never thought about it again until recently. Now is the perfect time to see where this goes.

I thought I was the only one

Not sure how I'll vote. It's been a few years since I've heard it, but I look forward to pulling it out this weekend to decide

I realize I'm probably being Captain Obvious in saying this, but this album sounds like the band was completely fucked up the entire time they made it. It makes me wonder where appreciating an album morphs into watching a train wreck.

I love that this record and "Up The Bracket", especially on headphones, one can hear all of these random guitar filigrees that are sort-of in the key of the song, and sort-of not quite there; much like the "Dead Man's Pop" version of the Replacements' "Don't Tell A soul" (which finally unearthed similar guitartistry that was missing on the original release). What a metaphor for both bands, the greatness and the mess, what could have been, but what they still gave us.

This might sound weird, but even though I am fan of the Libertines, I like that you have no use for this band. The playlist of faves from the current year that you share with the ILX community, which I first followed in 2018, has introduced me to several artists (Men I Trust, Peggy Gou, and Jorja Smith being just a few), aiding my quest to even further expand my tastes beyond 'dudes/dudettes from British cities scraping guitars and shouting over them'.

While I still love a lot of those bands, they are a much smaller share of my library than they were before, and my life is richer for it, so thank you!

After a reacquainting myself with this album this morning, I'm voting "The Band Who Would be King" by a nose over "What Became of the Likely Lads" and "What Katie Did." I still love this record but there is definitely more filler than I remember

Xxpost: i’m amplifying my actual dislike of them lol, I don’t really mind them because thank god I have been only exposed by choice to them. I can see the appeal for people who like a certain kind of energy to their artists. I think this album is more passable than their previous one.

If you're not a Britisher they're less offensive. I love them.

"Can't Stand Me Now" is what Mick 'n' Keith should've written to each other 25 years ago.

They weren’t popular at all on this side of the world. The UK bands from the “garage rock/post punk revival” that were big in Mexico in the 00’s were Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys. And Bloc Party to a lesser degree. From britpop Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Keane were the big ones iirc. New rave was also largely ignored over here.

There was more connection with the American revival.

I reckon that was bands like the Strokes?

The only thing to add to my comments in the landfill thread is I got this free CD at the time off my great auntie who was a big fan.

I didn't enjoy it.

Yeah Strokes, Interpol, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Killers…

I guess their proximity to Mexico helped too as they toured frequently and made festival headlines here. I think there was a single year were the Killers did like 9 concerts repeating the same big cities.

The Libertines only visited Mexico city twice in festivals iirc.

In the 00’s Interpol and Yeah Yeah Yeahs had a way bigger fanbase than white stripes and strokes if you can believe it.

About the only bands I like from this whole lot are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the White Stripes. Karen O is a superlative frontwoman. Otherwise, I'd describe these bands as modestly talented and much less interesting than the people they are aping.

The White Stripes don't quite seem to fit with the rest.

Yeah 100% the same feeling for me.

The only album I actually purchased and loved from a band mentioned there is Fever to Tell.

I think I also have the Strokes debut on vinyl but it was a gift. I think I’ve given it a spin once.

It’s probably lost in a box from the last time I moved.

The most interesting thing about the Strokes is that the father of one of the band members recorded "It Never Rains in Southern California."
