Hope I’m not the only one repping 311 here. Grassroots-> 311 -> Transistor is an amazing run!

xp a couple of my middle school friends tried to convince me they were a white supremacist band since K is the eleventh letter of the alphabet so therefore three 11s = KKK.

Yeah that was up there with “Screech died of a heroin OD” and the Marilyn Manson rib removal story in the annals of grade school celebrity fabulism circa 1994-96

A few months ago I heard 311's Grassroots and self-titled for the first time. I thought the s/t was quite crap and Grassroots not bad. But I don't know why I think so differently of them because they're basically the same album? Idk

Only Sublime album I've heard is Robbin' the Hood which is fun in a decomposing-as-its-played way. So it's easily them from my limited evidence.

The band members themselves were cryptic and made joke about it and had to explain it comes from the police code after major publications started running with the KKK rumor.

Apparently they wrote the song “silver” in response to the allegations

Sublime probably the better of the two but 311 suck in a way I’ve always found really endearing

I don’t quite get how these two bands got so popular amongst college demographics in the 90s. Most of their stuff is unlistenable and only had like two good singles per album at most.

Anyhoo, Sublime I guess. 311 do not deserve the reappraisal. Their music was bad at the time, and has aged like milk since.

Sublime self titled is okay but could lose about 10 songs. From the singles “Doin time” and “what i got” have aged alright I think.

Sublime’s two first records sound like damn demos. I somewhat respect how famous they got considering how low quality their product sounded like.

I used to play around with RPG Maker 2000 back in the day. you could only use MIDI files for music and I'm telling you, Sublime in MIDI form is excellent. Santeria was the perfect village music and Wrong Way was great for the bonus stages

Sublime sucked but they sucked in a ska-punk way and fit in on boomboxes next to Operation Ivy and Fat Wreck/Epitaph bands. 311 sucked in the funk metal/rap rock lineage (like Sugar Ray before they were embraced on TRL) and bridged over to the later pop nu/rap-metal like Papa Roach.

Really not much in common beyond "fans who smelled like ditch weed."

songs like 'Stealing Happy Hour' have a grateful dead or jam band flavor. 311 albums have the production value of a jam band studii effort.

xps I disagree to some degree or at least I get the comparison between them. 311 have played extensively with reggae on everything I've heard by them (now including Transistor which this thread has inspired me to hear).

311 definitely have more of that alien conspiracy theory jam band thing going on, like sound tribe sector 9

40 oz to Freedom and Robbin' the Hood are both nearly as ambitious as 3 Feet High and Rising or Paul's Boutique in terms of their blending of samples, covers, one-off lifted lyrics and riffs... Not that Sublime succeeded as well as those groups did, but they're still great records that are full of love for a spectrum of music that came before them.

My Sublime fanhood has gone through phases. It started the day in 1995 when a friend gathered a group of us around to listen to a cassette dub of Date Rape. Everyone who stood in that circle drove out to DC or Baltimore later that week to the cool record shops that would even stock 40 oz to Freedom, because it sure wasn't available at Sam Goody yet. By the end of that school year, it was the number one soundtrack for the stoners in our high school. I got to see them in April 96 about a month before Brad died and they fucking ripped.

The self-titled album was disappointing to me. The whole vibe could be symbolized by the artwork of a drunk, naked, repulsive clown on the inside cover. The moment I saw that, I was like this is not for me. I tried to like the album for a while, but some of the songs (on the singles and more popular songs in particular) sounded half-baked and dumb. I really didn't like the lyrics in Santeria or Wrong Way or Doin' Time for example. And those songs blew up to what seemed like Nirvana levels of ubiquity on modern rock radio at the time. Every dipshit in a pickup truck was singing about how he wanted to "pop a cap in Sancho and slap her down." I had to cast them aside for awhile.

But I've been listening to them again lately. I think Brad Nowell had a voice like an angel and he could play that guitar like a motherfucking riot (if not on that particular song).

I first heard 311 in 1996, before Brad died. I was stoned at a Myrtle Beach t shirt shop when I heard this music that sounded almost like Sublime but with heavier guitars. I went out and bought the self-titled tape immediately, but it just didn't hold up for me under sober listening. I haven't intentionally listened to them since.

On the scale of embarrassing 90's stuff that i outgrew, Sublime holds us way better than Phish these days. Those first 2 albums were an immersive little world (I never realized that my versions were missing any tracks until now).

thought ilm had more sublime defenders - I know I tried pretty hard with them after reading somebody on here talking about 40 Oz to Freedom but I just could not get it. 311 does have terrible taste in drum tones but they're from Iowa, whose state motto is Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain, so 311 gets my vote

Santeria has the most awkward and unfunky groove in the history of grooves, and Wrong Way is a ska anthem about a child prostitute. I literally cannot imagine anything worse than that band, so 311 by default. Plus I have a weird soft spot for Down.

Wait, why was Phish mentioned upthread? Were those guys also popular amongst the same Sublime crowd in the 90’s? They also suck hard.

I relate Phish more to bands like Rusted Root or Spin Doctors that are also good cases against the 90s being a good decade for music.

Neither is FOR ME, but gun to head I'd go with 311 for the simple fact they aren't Sublime.

I would probably agree that 311 fans are less likely to be obnoxious than Sublime fans.

IME a lot of them are just kind of milquetoast -- big overlap with people who like Soundgarden but only Superunknown, Smash Mouth, etc. Whereas Sublime fans are more often legit douchebags. Present company excluded!

I will posit that one’s music taste has nothing to do with one’s milquetoast-ness, I also would imagine that are some pretty wilding 311 fans vibin on alien conspiracy theories and shrooms etc

actually what 311 most evokes for me these days is those fancy weed dispensaries that look like Apple Stores but with more wood

I think husband/boyfriend was more of a Pantera type of guy, so I was only a witness. Besides she was pretty pi$$ed off at the acting up kid. It was a Saturday afternoon in a Lowes, it was only one spiral away from the gates of hades.

sublime shirts huge at the school i work at, only nirvana beats them among rock acts for today's jr. high kids. haven't seen any 311 shirts or merch in the wild in years, and every day i see at least 2 sublime shirts.

Mentioned Infected Mushroom because they converge with Sphongle to me, if you liked one you liked the other. They had some weird fans in the early 00s ime.

Most of the Sphongle/Infected Mushroom fans I knew didn’t really seem to come from an electronic background, they came from ska/nu metal mostly so yeah I think they were definitely into 311 at some point.

I heard a lot of Sublime in the late 90s via my older sister, who was very into them back then. Eventually I liked them too! And I still like some of those songs, even though the whole Sublime vibe is so off-putting. Listening to them kind of feels like being stuck at a party I don't want to be at, but the tunes are at least decent. Whereas my reaction to 311 has always been "...really?"
