I was going to do a poll of the singles that came before the debut but decided to do this album instead as it's already over two years old.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 June 2023 00:22 (two years ago)

I went for My Future. I somehow missed it as a single, but really fell for it when the album came out.

kitchen person, Thursday, 22 June 2023 00:26 (two years ago)

Seven singles were released from this album? That's sort of crazy.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 June 2023 15:48 (two years ago)

She's kind of disappeared from pop radio, at least as far as I can tell.

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Thursday, 22 June 2023 15:52 (two years ago)

inclined to vote for the title track but i've been meaning to revisit this

Oxytocin

thirded.

stirmonster, Thursday, 22 June 2023 17:26 (two years ago)

I don’t know who took the decision but not releasing Oxytocin as the leading single - not released as a single at all (!) - is very confusing to me.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 22 June 2023 18:38 (two years ago)

7 singles for this album is out of touch with reality. It’s good as a full album but I struggle to pick more than 3 radio friendly singles.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 22 June 2023 19:06 (two years ago)

my 13 year old step daughter says it is between lost cause and getting older.

stirmonster, Thursday, 22 June 2023 19:10 (two years ago)

I love the album, hard to pick just one track... but "Lost Cause" was my personal playlist pick

Bittern Storm Over My Hammy (morrisp), Thursday, 22 June 2023 19:37 (two years ago)

“Getting Older”

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 June 2023 21:03 (two years ago)

Still only heard this a couple of times but I think it's pretty dope, I'd go with oxycontin based on my limited exposure.

omar little, Thursday, 22 June 2023 21:04 (two years ago)

Billie Bossa Nova

piscesx, Thursday, 22 June 2023 22:25 (two years ago)

“Lost cause” and “change my number” would be my picks

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 22 June 2023 23:08 (two years ago)

I'm leaning "Therefore I Am" or "Billie Bossa Nova.'

Bee OK, Friday, 23 June 2023 17:51 (two years ago)

She's kind of disappeared from pop radio, at least as far as I can tell.

Honestly, I'm surprised she ever appeared in the first place. She's far too odd for mainstream radio, or maybe I'm just superannuated at this point.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 23 June 2023 18:11 (two years ago)

I thought this album was a bit more popular around here. Anyways, debut is the better album.

Bee OK, Saturday, 24 June 2023 21:12 (two years ago)

"bury a friend" is worth the price of admission.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 24 June 2023 21:26 (two years ago)

xp I must, respectfully but sincerely, disagree!

Bittern Storm Over My Hammy (morrisp), Saturday, 24 June 2023 22:00 (two years ago)

xpost Yeah, pop radio moved on to more normal stuff like Steve Lacey and SZA

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Saturday, 24 June 2023 22:06 (two years ago)

xp I must, respectfully but sincerely, disagree!

I knew you and ufo and probably most would not agree but do wonder if others actually do agree with me on that one?

Bee OK, Sunday, 25 June 2023 01:15 (two years ago)

I much prefer this album to her debut, but I'm not surprised it wasn't as commercially successful and didn't stick around as long.

kitchen person, Sunday, 25 June 2023 01:49 (two years ago)

i went with the title track instinctively but i have no idea if that's correct. it's not really an album with standout tracks, more of an extended mood piece with fantastic production, greater than the sum of its parts. maybe "getting older", "my future", "your power"?

7 singles was just because "my future" and "therefore i am" were released long before the album campaign started proper, and then the label seemed to be kinda flailing not knowing how to get a hit out of this, which isn't surprising as "therefore i am" is the closest to the debut's hits and it's very easily one of the weakest tracks. i agree that "oxytocin" was a missed opportunity though

ufo, Sunday, 25 June 2023 04:08 (two years ago)

ufo otm, as per usual…

Bittern Storm Over My Hammy (morrisp), Sunday, 25 June 2023 04:25 (two years ago)

I'll be the idiot who votes for Goldwing, I tend to like the production exercises more than the hits.
Billie feels like nostalgia now - she was the only game in town for my mid-late teen daughters in the early phases before the first album, first album ruled the household and the car, we marvelled at the documentary etc. and then this album kinda sorta hit, and then nothing further from them. It was a nice ride and she seemed pretty amazingly levelheaded for where she was at, but the whole "sexy is empowering and I'm not selling out" landed with a thud for my guys and they didn't really stay with her path from there.
I do enjoy Finneas as a pop producer but I'm still gobsmacked by the video where they showed about 200 slices of 20 takes being comped into a vocal for one track, that kind of micromanagement feels manipulative rather than engaging, and yet it clearly works spectacularly well.

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 25 June 2023 06:10 (two years ago)

This is by miles the better album but the debut actually has workable singles - although I just realized the debut also had 8 (!) singles released which is ridiculous.

That said her best top 10 single is “everything I wanted”.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 25 June 2023 15:02 (two years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 26 June 2023 00:01 (two years ago)

so I haven't been able to listen to this. I'm a luddite and am wondering - how do you search for a new album on Apple Music using the Music app on Macbook. There is no search bar at all, or any way to search for anything. it seems utterly ridiculous, designed to confuse.

Dan S, Monday, 26 June 2023 00:37 (two years ago)

? There is a search icon top right, isn’t there?

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 26 June 2023 01:34 (two years ago)

sorry

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 26 June 2023 01:35 (two years ago)

as in, if you do a search, the results come up from your local library, or if you click to a different tab at upper right, from the Store or whatever. I don't have an Apple Music subscription so I can't verify that.

Voted for number by mistake meant to vote for lost cause.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 27 June 2023 00:21 (two years ago)

three months pass...

Re-listened this week, and “NDA” hit so hard. It’s not one that necessarily stood out for me in the past (I couldn’t even remember its title as it played, had to look at the tracklist), but man… what a song.

Chavez video on MTV, July 1995 (morrisp), Saturday, 14 October 2023 17:03 (one year ago)

This is such a remarkable album; I’m not sure it was fully appreciated in its moment.

Chavez video on MTV, July 1995 (morrisp), Saturday, 14 October 2023 17:05 (one year ago)

Yeah this album just balls out on every song
