Yeah, I think there were tons of people at that time who were obsessed with retro-horror/sci-fi schlok but the Misfits made something even better out of it

this does remind me ... back when youtube was newish (in terms of there being a lot of stuff on it), one of my first searches was for Glenn Danzig AND Wolverine because me and my bf had a very intellectual discussion that was like:

me: do you think Glenn's favorite was Wolverine?
him: uhhhhh ... maybe, Wolverine was really popular
me: do you think Glenn liked the fuck out of Wolverine and kinda modeled his look after Wolverine?

by far the album I've listened to more than any other in this life is that first "collection," I could've just picked the first five from it for this poll (I haven't voted yet and may do just that, ha), and it was years before I ever went beyond that to hear their "proper" albums/singles/live stuff, I didn't need anything else! that compilation is a perfect universe!

truly had my mind blown by the subject matter, the imagery in the lyrics, as I'd not really been into punk, and this was repeated later on a larger scale when I found death metal/black metal and said, "wait there's entire subgenres of music that align with all the stuff I love in movies and books, there's horror ... music??" like discovering a new dimension of perception, no exaggeration

Somebody on ILX posted a comp they had made... was it called Safe For Children? It was the first time I heard the Misfits and I listened to it obsessively. It's still my fave way of listening to them now that I've got all of the albums and whatnot.
