What are some albums that - in some way or another - list songs that aren't even on the record? Usually (but not always) because they were pulled at the last minute but artwork changes couldn't be made, or sometimes they were never meant at all.
These are the sort of things I mean
Blondie - Parallel Line (the lyric sleeve lists the title track between "Fade Away and Radiate" and "Pretty Baby")Pink Floyd - The Wall (similarly, the lyric sleeve lists the non-present "What Shall We Do Now?" instead of "Empty Spaces", its last minute replacement)Green Day - Shenanigans (the booklet has unused outtake "D.U.I." after track 9, although all the extra info about it is covered in spray paint)Graham Coxon - The Sky Is Too High (a bit similar to that, if not a proven 'song', but "(Pause)" listed near the end of the back cover track list but scribbled out)Michael Jackson - Dangerous (the end of the lyric booklet has the poem "Planet Earth" as the 15th 'track'; a recording of it was made but didn't appear until the This Is It comp)Paul Weller - 22 Dreams (okay, not even a track but the '22nd dream' to round off the 21 actual songs is actually a Simon Armitage story in the liner notes).
Are there any actual further examples? Is there even a tiny thread in this? Have I truly plunged into the rabbit hole of album artwork minutiae? (The answer to the latter is of course 'Yes, YEARS ago, and I love it here'.)

I suppose you could count Sly and the Family Stone's "There's a Riot Goin' On" - title track is listed but it's conceptual, CD version has a zero second duration.

Parallel Lines thing is a lyric she wrote that she wanted to put in the inner sleeve, I don't think it was ever intended for inclusion in the album
Early pressings of Fairport Convention's Full House had a black sticker over the track listing bc the track Poor Will & The Jolly Hangman was pulled at the last minute

I think the lyrics printed on the inner sleeve for Cutting The Heavenly Lawn Of Greatness...Last Rites For The God Of Love by Yeah Yeah Noh included extra lyrics that don't actually appear on the record for some of the songs

this is surprisingly hard to google (or I'm too stupid to do so)
- this CD single seems to have 5 tracks on the cover but only 4 on the CD: https://www.discogs.com/release/3010946-Suicidal-Tendencies-Send-Me-Your-Money
these may be the rabbit hole too far:
- counterfeit CDs tend to have downloaded cover art that doesn't necessarily match the actual music- bootlegs get it wrong often too

The first pressing of Neil Young's Trans included a track listed on the sleeve which was not on the record itself.https://i.discogs.com/d8gKEc0SO1MfR64MaxASTEQJQWBySdAkncIli1MVVbs/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTM5OTU1/NC0xNTgyNDU2NjYw/LTg5NDguanBlZw.jpeg

Didn’t Liquid Swords by GZA have a track listing that didn’t match the number of tracks on the album? I’m still not sure what some of the tracks are called

The 23 track US CD version of Selected Ambient Works Vol. II replicates the pie chart art from the vinyl version showing 25 tracks even though 2 of these were cut for time.

Ghostface Killah's Bulletproof Wallets is infamous for this; the track listing was radically revamped right before release — three tracks were pulled, the sequence was reshuffled, and it went out the door with the wrong track listing on the back cover.

Missing tracks?! How about missing albums? The Jimmy Webb box set The Moon's a Harsh Mistress lists a live disc that is not included in the (lavish) packaging.

https://www.discogs.com/master/1004661-The-Housemartins-Christmas-Box
there's something odd about this. it says 'Caravan of Love plus 8 other top songs' but then there's a sticker saying "8 (not 9)", even though there are actually 9 on there. i think it was a chart eligibility thing, more than 8 songs disqualified it as a single. and this was an attempt to get Christmas number one by boxing up three previous singles with the new one at a bargain price.

Queens of The Stone Age: "The Fun Machine Took A Shit and Died", which had been talked up in previews for Lullabies To Paralyze, but-as noted in the liner notes-was ultimately left off the album because the master tape was stolen very late in the game.

Great examples all around. The only one I did know of was Trans but I'd forgotten all about it. Also never knew about that sticker either.
Now 60 (the UK edition) has an extra song listed on the ringtones page (listing ringtone download codes for each song of the album) between tracks 19 and 20 on CD1 - a Freemasons-ish house track called On a Good Thing by C-Sixty Four. They presumably realised it was gonna flop - indeed it only made No. 54 a week before the compilation was released - so made a devilishly late edit. But One for the eagle-eyed.

re:Housemartins the CD of London 0 Hull 4 does something not dissimilar with the "16 songs - 17 hits!" so I guess they enjoyed little quirks like that. Reminds me of Blur and Stylorouge a bit (and only slightl less of several Barney Bubbles things).

not sure if it counts but "blood on the tracks" came out with liner notes by pete hamill talking about the songs on the album
except that dylan went in at the last minute and re-recorded half the songs and changed some of the lyrics, so hamill quotes lyrics that aren't on the record
when the record company realized this they reissued the record without the liner notes
but then hamill won a grammy for his liner notes so they reissued it again and put the liner notes back in

Nikka Costa’s can’tneverdidnithin’ had a much different tracklisting/sequence on the back than on the CD (or in the booklet).Elvis Costello’s Spike has lyrics on the back for “Stalin Malone,” which is an instrumental (and not very good, and should’ve been left off the record, not that that would’ve improved it much).Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s Ragged Glory was originally supposed to have printed lyrics, but Neil uncharacteristically changed his mind at the last minute, so the CD booklet folds out into several black pages with nothing printed on them.

Neil Young obviously has form for this, this is his third appearance in the thread. The cover of Are You Passionate? lists a song called Gateway of Love that is not on the record. Not exactly what the thread is looking for but early copies of Morrissey's Viva Hate were issued in Australia with the wrong title Education in Reverse.

This reminds me of the cover of Zooropa - featuring distorted bits of song titles in purple - being designed before the track listing was finalised. On the front you can see 'Wake Up Dead Man', 'Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me' and 'If You Wear That Velvet Dress', none of which actually appear despite being the three most decipherable.

Re: Selected Ambient Works Vol 2 - I bought the CD about 18 years ago and didn’t realize there was a missing track until a few months ago. As a fully fledged Aphex Twin fan, I’d have be embarrassed to not know that, but more than anything it’s a rare gift to just be handed that, like “hey, you know that classic album you really like, here’s a bonus piece that’s also (imo) the second best track on the album”

When I bought Unrest's Imperial f.f.r.r. in 1992 there were lyrics for two additional songs in the CD booklet which weren't on the album (Wednesday & Proud and Hydrofoil). I later found them on contemporary singles or the UK edition of the album, but not sure if they were originally slated to be on the US album too.

The booklet for Elton John's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy contains an unrecorded Taupin lyric called "Dogs in the Kitchen".Some of the sleeves of Japan's Gentlemen Take Polaroids list a song called "Some Kind of Fool", which was replaced by "Burning Bridges" late in the recording process, and not released for 20 years. If we're including missing bits of lyrics, there's a lengthy poem in the middle of Joni Mitchell's "Paprika Plains" in the gatefold that isn't heard on the record.

My copy of the Cramps' "Songs The Lord Taught Us" is a really crazy mess: the track "Drug Train" is listed on the back cover as the opener but isn't on the album at all, which opens instead with "TV Set", unlisted on the cover. The placement of the other 12 tracks over the two sides are in a quite different order than the cover reads. And even the labels on the vinyl are themselves totally inaccurate, showing a third different track sequence.
