search: barrington levy & rebel mc - under mi sensi (legalize it mix)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

search:
Under Mi Sensi (the original, on the Afrikaan Beat rhythm)
River Jordan
the whole of the Burning Sounds 'Hunter Man' album is excellent:
full length 'Shine Eye Girl' (with the Jah Thomas toast), Shaolin Temple, Hunter Man, Collie Weed, etc
Here I Come (Broader than Broadway)
Look Youthman
Mary Long Tongue
Dancehall Rock is pretty catchy too...

For the material on which his reputation was founded, a good place to start is the rather cheesy-looking "Barrington Levy Collection" on Greensleves, which collects the fantastic big hits from the 80s. mostly for Jah Screw.

I love Here I Come. I sing it to myself on the station platform and my missus starts dancing. Me with my crap voice. It's that perfect.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived next door to him in Hackney for 6 months in 1985! The bass on his sound system used to make furniture move around my flat as if by magic.

Afrikaan Beat has just turned up on Soul Jazz's Studio One Scorchers.

Shaolin Temple on Auralux is so ridiculously killer it's not even funny.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 24 January 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

no doubt Shaolin Temple is like one of the best albums ever

I'm enjoying Barrington Levy and Friends at Joe Gibbs 80-85. Such a great voice.

Here I Come is probably in my top 50 songs ever. The narrative of that song cracks me up. Every time I'm at an ATP I constantly crave hearing this and The Fourth Horseman by Aphrodite's Child.

Dude looks good in a colourful bowler hat as well. Barrington, not Vangelis.

I used to have a killer jungle remix of HIC but it doesn't seem to be the (much tougher, more fucked up) version on Spotify. That and the Fugees/Ganja Crew remix were probably my favourite crossover drum and bass remix tracks.

Doran, Saturday, 13 March 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

OTM, the beat of "here i come" just kills everything in sight

guammls (QE II), Saturday, 13 March 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

always liked the Robin Hood album more than Shaolin Temple

Just heard a late-night ad on my local r'n'b/rap station for a Wayne Wonder with Barrington Levy gig this Sunday in W. DC. I wonder what Levy's been up to lately?

curmudgeon, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:39 (nine years ago)

I missed the gig, and still haven't googled Levy's name to see what he's been up to lately
